I really, really don't get horse racing. Is it like the appeal of the Sydney to Hobart? People who think it's the sport of kings are temporarily embarrassed millionaires or just have gambling problems?

So this is only a thing because Cox is still playing for Collingwood, good to know.

But loving hell, that Texan/kinda halfway Aussie accent is something else.

Let's get a little crazy. Let's have some fun.
Considering some of the other rivalries Vice Sports has covered (the Belgrade one :stare:) the Blues-Pies one is pretty tame in comparison. I always laugh at the "they don't wear pads?! or helmets?!" thing because neither do we have 150kg linebackers deliberately running into each other at 100m dash pace several times per game.

Yes, and yes.

It's a "sport", so one can gamble on it without it being totally luck, (like roulette or blackjack), there is the promise of wealth, (both through betting and by being an owner), the veneer of glamour, (look at all the pretty ladies in their pretty dresses at cup time), but at the same time is a pastime of the 'common man', (look at the bogans in their cheap suits at cup time).

Also, nowadays, there is always a race going on somewhere in the world that one can bet on, and pre pokies, the TAB was the place that gambling addicts went. When I worked at the casino, as well as the sad sad people on teh pokies, the big screen was continually showing horse racing, and there was always at least one person watching/betting on it.

SEN's obsession with it? I'd put that down to the fact that there is only so much footy news that one can talk about, even during the season. And in the off season the same goes for cricket etc. They can do what they can with A-League news and/or rugby news and the like, but no-one cares. And as said above, there is always a race on, so the horses are a good bit of "Sports Entertainment News" to fill the spare hours during the non footy times. But this is all my half-arsed opinion, and it could be as simple as the VRC pays them well for the advertising time.

I always thought at least part of the reason for its popularity is that you can blame poo poo on the horse and know they won’t squeal when the cops come at you for race fixing.

I like how you can tell when the Hawthorn/Melbourne merger would've happened based on Hawthorn's member base doubling and Melbourne's slight growth.

Also the numbers of "non-access members" Essendon and Collingwood have.
I understand West Coast's numbers - there's no point buying an access membership if you're going on a waiting list anyway - but what's going on with those two?

Volker is the suns fan

Lmao I remember we collectively talked him into that.

I tried to talk Volkerball into being a Crows fan, but he'd already committed to GC apparently. Not that we have any more flags than Gold Coast since Volker started but I think we've been a bit more fun to watch...

At the time it was perceived to be injuries and bad luck that had kept the Suns from being successful, when it was actually the presence of two diametrically opposed mega-cancers and one of the most dysfunctional offices since... oh hey Brisbane, didn't see you there.

It was my idea to support the suns because I wanted to pick a new team, and GWS didn't have Ablett. It worked out real well for me. Oh well, it's been fun in its own way. I was inspired to pick up a cocaine habit by following the suns, and that's been really good.

Looking up the timeline, I would've picked up the Suns at the end of 2013. So Jaeger O'Meara was the rising star and Jack Martin was coming in the next season and was probably going to be the rising star then. Loaded young team with the best player in the game as their captain. :sigh: Ablett's 2014 ruled at least. Nothing else really panned out except Lynch. Oh well, I already forced myself to hate GWS so there's no going back now. In for a penny, in for a pound.

It always amazes me that the entire salary payout for every single player is only 4x as much as Jon Gruden getting signed for $100mil x 10 years as an NFL coach.

GWS has Toby Greene so it's pretty easy to hate them and their team is full of faux-tough guys that crumble under pressure.

I'm another American, though I pretty much never post because of time zones and Fox moving AFL from a network very few people get to a network no one gets. Between that and not finding anywhere download matches, I missed this entire last season. How's the official streaming service, worth the money?

Oh, and I'm a Collingwood fan. Picked them since I grew up off of Collingwood Drive as a kid, seemed as good a reason as any.

Testro

Official streaming service is excellent, and well worth the money. The only negative is that you can't download the match to watch offline (only stream), which means I can't watch it on my boring commute - but otherwise, yes, top tier. I'm super happy with it.
