So a bunch of my vassals decided to band together in a war for independence while I was distracted with fending off a neighboring empire's attempt to punish me for all my atrocities. Point is, I smashed all their fleets to pieces, but their warscore keeps ticking up despite them being toothless and not actually doing anything. Is this normal and if so what exactly am I supposed to do to combat it?

Have you occupied all their poo poo? I haven't played a really oppressive empire yet so I don't have experience with them in Stellaris, but independence wars in Paradox games generally have a ticking warscore as long as the rebels remain independent, even if you've blown up all their troops.

Well poo poo, I was hoping crushing their fleets would give me some breathing room to finish my other war first, but that warscore is ticking up faster than I'll be able to smash them down again. Does that score tick down if I start occupying planets or am I going to have to race the clock for this.

I believe that during an independence war rebellious vassals get 1% warscore every month (maybe not that often - but it is pretty regular) that the war drags on for. This means that If the war lasts long enough it can become nigh impossible to win by score alone.

I think your best bet would be to blockade all of their worlds. Blockading like mad pushes up your warscore, and I think if you blockade all their worlds it forces an end to the war - every time I have done it, or seen the AI do it, the opposing AI usually capitulates.

That'd be neat. I also would like more non-humanoid species portraits. I really want one that's just a giant cephalopod, rather than a Cthulhu-ish squid-faced person, for example. More really bizarre and out-there things, and also things that look closer to animals and monsters than people and whatnot.

I mean, my favorite thing in this game so far is faffing about exploring things, and I kind of miss trade routes from Civ V, so...I'm kind of at a loss with what to do about other species and empires, especially as I'm still struggling to build a fleet that can crack the 1k power mark.

there's a mod called Fermi Paradox that allows for that. you can have the galaxy be empty or just populated by primitives that you can Probe til your heart's content. I don't know if it has been kept up to date with the latest patch tho.

I'm getting real mad at how this game handles combat: doomstacks. Every time I think I've got enough ships to go push some alien tentacle in, they pop out with a 3k fleet and smear me all over the quadrant. Then I go online to find a guide on how to win at combat, and the first advice is to turn off the auto-complete option for ship designs, and - argh!

This is an obtuse, frustrating mechanic where I need to have the best doomstack with the best weapons, and it's really, really tedious.

....So of course, I've come here to ask for tips. What's the best up-to-date guide on how to get good at combat? Can I leave auto-complete on and focus on pumping out cruisers?

ZypherIM

Autocomplete honestly is fine most of the time, especially if a 3k fleet is what is giving you the business. If you've got a lot of weapon techs then you can dive into trying to specialize your ships a bit. A generic fleet should have something to get through shields, armor, and some point defense for missiles/fighters.

At a 3k fleet size, you probably don't have that many weapon techs though. I'd aim at getting the first point defense tech from the blue tech tree. If you're able to defeat any of the ancient mining robots, the mining laser is really good because it cuts through 100% of armor. If you can see the enemy fleet and inspect it, you can look at the enemy ship layout and see if they're heavy on certain attacks or defensive types.

Make a good mix of ship sizes, and try to out-muscle the enemy. Even fleet strengths is a risky battle, so if possible lure them into a defense station and fight them when they jump into it (warp indicator). Remember you can make over fleet capacity if needed, though it'll be expensive.

It has always been a bit of a curiosity for me that there doesn't really seem to be any consequences for ravaging your way across the galaxy since there aren't really any major economic effects or even significant diplomatic effects (outside of fallen empires early to mid game) that would discourage you. Other empires don't really give a fig what you tend to do with the conquered remnants of another empire aside from, "be unhappy" or "maybe send insults" even if they were former allies of said empire. It tends to garner a map painting simulator sort of feel in a vanilla EU IV kind of way. Really looking forward to Banks, but also suffering from the not wanting to play until the patch comes out syndrome.

As an aside, I used several of the trading mods off of the workshop from time to time and the extra civilian traffic definitely brings the galaxy to life, especially the silly billboards.

I've said it before but this game desperately needs more empire <-> empire interaction. Right now there's not much you can do with other empires other then inevitably and eventually conquering them. There's literally no benefit to being Good Buds with your neighbors that you can't get better from invading them. Which incidentally is why pacifism is so exceptionally weak in-game - there's no reward for it! Of course, this is magnified by how terrible and fairly pointless Federations are. Last game I had someone desperately asking me nonstop to join their lovely federation, except doing so would mean I lose my ability to slowly annex my neighbors above me, to absolutely no gain, because I was stronger then almost everyone else in that federation combined. I guess you gain high diplomatic relations with everyone else in the federation, but why should I give a poo poo about that?

Also this thread title is a sad fart, and now people are gathering around to scream about how they loving trolled us with the sad fart, so I'm glad we hit that in four pages.

Once you're really into it, PD laser destroyers + 6m plasma cruisers are all you really need and let you punch waaaay above your fleet strength. The only downside being long range BB fleets, but in that case you just need to strategically enter their system next to them to negate the range advantage.

If you're having trouble as low as 3k I don't know what to tell you.

If you're getting killed by a 3k fleet, the answer is build more ships. If you're at your fleet cap, the answer is build more spaceports. If you have no spaceports to build, or no minerals, the answer is expand faster.

At super early tech and industry levels like that, fleet design is pretty negligible, unless one side can afford to be building all destroyers or something.

Yes. Make sure to turn off the "advanced neighbor" option or similar (Wiz says it's off. Y default in 1.5).

Until you're messing with an endgame crisis or a fallen empire (at which point your fleets should be 50k or more), ship design is tactical or at most strategic and you want to work on the logistics that let you have 6k when your neighbors have 3k.

Also, allies help.

"Tiny Trains"

Good designs help, but it's mostly just having a bigger doom stack than the enemy and winning a single grand battle that destroys the entire enemy fleet at the very start of the war, then spending years mindlessly building up warscore while the enemy has no ability to recover but your will to continue playing the game goes down with every planet you have to tediously invade. You get this bigger fleet by having a bigger economy than your enemy, which you got by grabbing up the best planets in the early game.

I think if you look in the previous thread (you don't have to), you'll find that PittTheElder decided to play a singular species genocidal run and it took them a month or so to finish it by painting the entire galaxy. Not sure on total duration, they could tell you more!

Early mid-game I think, end game doomstacks might have around 150k fleet power. These paradox games are usually not played to 'win' or finish the game. Once you can stomp everything (except bullshit Ascended Empires doomstacks), even crisis, you can just start a new game (or continue to take 8 to 9 planets every few years forever).
