How did this smug dummkopf ever make general?

Battlefleet Gothic Armada is a tactical fleet battle game based upon the Warhammer 40k miniature game, Battlefleet Gothic. It was developed by Tindalos Interactive who previously made a spaceships MOBA which plays oddly similarly to this title. Its campaign oversees the events of the 12th Black Crusade, also known as the Gothic War, and is played on a sector map with real-time tactical battles, not too dissimilar to a Total War game. It is also the most story focused Warhammer game and one of only a select few titles where the main characters are not the Space Marines but rather the Imperial Navy.

Cool, so does that mean many fleets?

No, we only get one fleet with persistent leveling. There is no movement on the campaign map, it's basically just a glorified mission list. The campaign is also semi-dynamic, featuring branching paths and losses that do not necessarily mean game over, even in story missions. I promise to reach the end, but I might also show off some branching events and alternate mission resolutions.

Can we be the Orks?

Again, no. The campaign only covers the Imperial perspective and it does so rather well. It is our job to put out the many fires started by the hostile factions in this game, the forces of Chaos, Ork Pirates and Eldar Corsairs. Failure to do so will create unfavorable conditions which may preclude us from winning the game. The skirmish mode also features Space Marine and Tau fleets, the former being awfully similar to the Imperial Navy and the latter being simply broken and wonderful as Tau ships should be.

Can't be Orks, just one fleet, this game sounds bad.

This game is my favourite of all Warhammer games, including the Dawn of War series, Space Marine, Shadow of the Horned Rat and Total War: Warhammer. Maybe this gif will convince you.

The voice acting is particularly fantastic, and everything within the game exudes raw Warhammer. Still, this game can be enjoyed by a non-Warhammer fan similarly to how Mad Max can be enjoyable with no understanding of its insane world. Another point in its favour is the high degree of unit automation which can be applied, meaning micromanaging is kept to maneuvering only which is a ton of fun and looks really good. That and ramming, as showcased in the above gif.

What's the format, and is there thread participation?

This will be a video LP, ideally with each video sitting roughly around 30 minutes of length give or take. You may also submit names for ships and captains who I will shout at for fleeing and dooming the fleet to demise or summarily execute. I'll be playing the campaign along with showcasing the other available fleets through the skirmish mode. The Prologue's missions are highly skippable, though the cutscenes and voice acting during the missions are top notch.

But always consider what you can do for the Emperor, become a captain (or a ship) and die for the sake of the Imperium of Man. Just don't call the Imperial Guard the Astra Militarum or the Eldar the Aeldari and you'll do fine.

Curse you, this game looks incredible - I give in, it's going on my wishlist. I've always been more interested in the space-battles in Warhammer than the ground stuff, and this looks incredibly cool.

Also, thank you: a calm, informative LP style is the best way to present this kind of game, imo, and you're doing it splendidly. :D

I started playing this before my gaming pc broke and I was having fun right up to a certain mission, not going to say which yet because spoilers. Even when they don't cause a game over it can be annoying.

Also did anyone notice the shadow in the opening cinematic for the crone?

I know what you're talking about, and that is actually the canon route: You are meant to lose those missions.

The beginning of the conflict is what is called the Horus Heresy and there is around 43 novels from multiple authors dealing specifically with the period, if you don't want to read that many books, you can just go to Lexicanum to get your fill of 40k knowledge.

First: How come you aren't using autocast for your abilities? Since you were planning to board the ship anyway, you could have set boarding on autocast to reduce needless micro. Lock target might also be useful to autocast on escorts.

I've never played the actual tabletop naval combat game, only the adaptation for the recent Rogue Trader TRPG. So it'll be interesting to see something closer to the source, not to mention actual fleet-based combat. (My players' approach to selecting ships is to kit them out like horrifying Christmas trees of doom that are each capable of devouring whole squadrons. In this game, well...customization seems to be more at the strategic level.)

I'd actually not recommend the Horus Heresy books, as they make real what should've been an age of larger than life myth, and humanize what should've been demigods.

Instead, I'd recommend the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series of books for a look at usual Imperial life, the book Fifteen Hours for the life of a Guardsman, this game for the Imperial Navy, the Dawn of War series of games for the Space Marines and the Faith and Fire books for the Adepta Sororitas. This way, you should have a pretty good handle on the signature factions of the Imperium.

And yes, the Adepta Sororitas are damned well signature :colbert:

I actually think the Caiaphas Cain and Gaunt's Ghosts series should be saved until a newbie has a better grasp of the Imperium, the former because most of the jokes within might not land as well as they could, while the latter might make Guardsmen look a shitload more badass than they usually are. I won't lie, they're both my favourite 40K series, but part of that is because I had a foundation of 40K knowledge to jump off.

Nah. I didn't read Flashman before reading Ciaphas Cain, and I consider it a good thing.

Flashman is an utterly abominable piece of poo poo, and it would have significantly distorted my view of the Cain books. Half their charm comes from embracing the insanity of 40k, and grimdark is a lot easier to laugh at than a dark satire of real stuff that Flashman is.

Eisenhorn -> The Entire 40K Online Lexicanum -> Cain/Gaunt's Ghosts (Alternate between series to prevent the Ghosts giving you Grimdark overload) -> Ravenor -> Shira Calpurnia -> Blood Angels -> Soul Drinkers (Because you need to experience at least a tiny amount of what the rest of 40K fiction is like.)

Edit: gently caress, I forgot to throw the complete and utter poo poo that is Inquisition War in there somewhere, because that hot garbage is insane and must be experienced.

start with Eisenhorn. It's a good standard-ish story about a regular man in the Imperium.

So was there a reason you didn't use emergency repairs for either your destroyer or retreating cruiser while they were on fire?

Tutorial doesnt let you use it. Autocast is the most powerful of Imperial weapons.

Tutorial mission, its basically scripted so I let the game play out. For example, if the destroyer didnt die then Krath wouldnt take over, and until he does the enemy cruiser cant take any more damage after a certain point.

The Battlefleet Gothic books are extremely good and cover this conflict. Horus Heresy is a mixed bag that is better after reading the rest. My gateway into the series was Gaunt's Ghosts, space Sharpe basically.
