The new LMP1 regs are a double edged sword: 1. for the consumer, it's great when that trickles down, 2. the makers may not like them and pull out.

I like them, but yeah... I hope Toyota and Porsche stick around.

That's a bit backward, consumer tech trickles into racing these days.

All of the tech to enable this on the track has been under development for a while for consumer focused applications. They absolutely made sure Porsche and Toyota already had programs for this before it ever made it in. That doesn't mean business condition changing won't cause them to leave but they already have the capability. 2020 seems about right for commercial deployment given the current state of quick charge tech and regulatory discussion.

Akio Toyoda basically created the Gazoo Racing brand as a lark to go to the Nurburgring 24 Hours, and now it's their official branding for factory teams. It's operated in Germany but includes Japanese engineers, and again, that's where the budget comes from. These guys have pride and won't have wanted to lose this through stupid problems, especially not after dominating qualifying and the first two WEC rounds. Toyota most likely had a very big hand in the rules for P1 Hybrid which were proposed on Friday, don't forget.

Just FYI but GR has been realigned under the marketing arm recently.

An amazing amount of low effort arm chair engineering going on. Yeah the clutch died but if you over engineer everything for every situation you end up with a slow tank. Any of the prototypes running at full tune isn't going to last very long, it's the nature of the class.

On top of that there are bunches of parts you're not allowed to harden or change due to regs...
