Cig's entire existence is weird to me. He SHOULD represent everything I hate about hipster culture, but somehow I find him charming as hell.

Here's the reason: I don't think Cig is a hipster. He really wants to dress that way. That's what he likes and who he is.

Hipsters do stuff like that to maintain hipster status, to our irony each other. There's no irony with Cig. He just digs it.

I appreciated Tyler's shoutout to the Disney Gargoyles series, though. :kiddo:

I think that's what cost him. I'm kind of disappointed they sent home literally the best artist on the show because he fudged what era he was getting architecture from, likely in the name of doing a Gargoyles cartoon homage. Which he did, and it was absolutely great.

He literally lost on an A+ makeup, and I can say there are worse ways to go out. Plus there's no way he won't be back on Emily's team in the finale, so at least the audience won't miss out on cool poo poo he does.

Also Emily totally deserved the win this episode, that bird was fantastic. Frankly Cig and George were both fighting a straight vertical uphill battle with their picks of style, so major props to them. Kind of amusingly I told my girlfriend, "Man, if I was making one of these, I'd totally break out the shiny silver and chrome. It'd look awesome on this challenge," and not 30 seconds later George totally rolls with it and indeed, it looked rad.

I find that kind of shocking given they don't have the house situation anymore, they aren't doing stupid challenges like the "Fool your friends and family" mess, etc. I mean do they really take their cell phones away during the entire filming and keep the prisoner from going out to lunch?

Also I don't even see the point in that anymore for those reasons too. I just don't get it.

I love George, but I was also surprised by that. I think Tyler's was just too generic, while George definitely had a Deconstructionist look to his face.

Same, I really surprised by that result. I was 100% certain that George had been hosed over by randomly selecting Deconstructivism which was a bitch rear end move to pull on a contestant in the semi-finals.

But on the other hand I would've said the same thing about Cubism but one of the best makeups they've ever had on the show was an FX interpretation of Cubism so

Probably since it's an "all star" season they've made it much harder on the contestants. Make them rely on their own knowledge and creativity rather than researching something.

I don't agree that Tyler got sent home for mentioning the cartoon, though. Again, his makeup was an amazing gargoyle, but it wasn't specific to the architecture. As Ve pointed out, he's had a lot of repetition in the last few challenges with the scrunched up faces, too.

It was along the lines of "god of agriculture" and makes me wonder if the producers stick these wonky rear end categories in there just to screw over one contestant. Might as well have given someone a Brutalist gargoyle.

:wtf: at George not getting eliminated. That 'wing' was unacceptable. It was a piece of foam painted barely metallic and attached with a rope? Conceptually Tyler's gargoyle looked more gothic than victorian but it was made super well. Just odd to see a better technique lose out to concept.

Emily's art deco bird is my favourite of the season. So good. I want her to win but I feel like Cig will slip by and defeat her.

I was worried about Emily after last week, but she really pulled it out this week and restored my faith in her. That makeup was awesome. I'm pulling for her in the finale, but I'd be find with Cig or George, so there's really no disappointing me next episode.

That said, it really was a tough call between George and Tyler. George's had those hideous wings and horns... but the actual makeup was a great interpretation of his architectural style. Tyler's was incredibly well executed... but felt generic and didn't fit the architecture. It could have gone either way, but I think I feel better about the guy with the harder assignment going through, even though I liked Tyler.

Ecce Buffo
There were two ways that you could make the wings for Deconstructivism: 1. Fabricate a large sweeping set of asymmetrical wings that almost overtakes the silhouette and becomes the central piece almost or put some random piece of junk on the back and say "That's a wing". Postmodernist architecture can range from fusion to Dadaist. When I was in school, a classmate of mine made a deconstructivist apartment block, that didn't have walls and instead had concrete blocks strewn about on the lawn and he described it as "the walls are conceptual, so your apartment is only limited by what you determine as yours." The teachers loved it. It's a really hard style for people to hammer down, but his facial sculpting was spot on.

Personally, I would have, I don't know, stapled a ship's wheel on his back. "There. That's wings." It's about challenging perceptions.

Finally saw the episode. Emily's was great all around, but I absolutely loved loved loved Cig's. Tyler did a good job too, but it didn't look Victorian, and the judges were right it looked super derivative of his past several weeks of challenges. George's head sculpt was great, but I did a little sympathy cringe for him every time they showed the full silhouette of the model on the reveal stage.

His little happy dance when he found out he was in the finals was completely :3: though.

I wasn't into Cig's gargoyle at all. It looked like he just plopped some onion domes on the head and shoulders. I didn't agree with the flesh tone, either.

George's wing would have been great if it looked like it was held up by cables instead of just some rope.

Putting onion domes on the makeup seems like something the judges would have called out as being way too literal an interpretation, but they've praised Cig for other things that I couldn't fathom this season, so whatever. I also thought the paint job was hideous.

Or Jerry from season two. God that guy was a poo poo.

Glad Cig won. His make ups were far and beyond better than the other two, although that may have been because he didn't have to incorporate bird-like features, which the other two contestants seemed to struggle with.

They've been showing off the finale makeups in dorky mini-films for the last few finales and they're always an anti-climax, I wish they'd think of something else. It also limits what the contestants can do with their makeups which is lovely.
Half the makeups in this finale were just heads and maybe hands, they were practically Focus Challenge entries which really sucks when each contestant had three helpers but didn't have the chance to do large complex cowls or loads of props and accessories.

It'd be cool if they were two small companies competing to get a gig doing effects for an upcoming big budget Hollywood movie but I doubt that'll happen.

Yeah whoever got first pick had a MASSIVE advantage and Cig totally lucked out there. The teams who were left with a choice between snake & eagle or mantis & crane were really hosed in terms of giving their sculpts personality or expressiveness in a way that dragon and tiger weren't, especially since the instructions on what the characters had to look like were pretty restrictive. And it's not like there's not a ton of different martial arts styles based on different animals the producers could have chosen from.

Poor Emily had last pick and was stuck with crane and mantis. :whitewater:

It's basically been the story that the judges really don't critique the finale makeups on camera, the just give varying degrees of praise then pick a winner. It was a good final 3, and Cig clearly had the best pick, but he still crushed it & so the win was well earned.
