The combat in this game seriously makes me wince.

Batman would tell these guys to take it down a notch or five.

So are there any tips for combat in general? I am getting to what I think is the end of chapter 1, and my current tactic of "mash lots of buttons because I forget what they do" is not particularly effective against Kuze. Maybe I should just switch to easy and enjoy the ride....

For strong single opponents like Kuze, Rush style is your best best. Go for hit-and-run attacks and don't be afraid to get in his face, because Kazuma's basic jabs in Rush mode come out faster than most of Kuze's attacks. Once you get him on the ground, use a Heat attack and back off because he's going to come up swinging.

You know, this whole "DRAGON OF DOJIMA" title is feeling kinda hollow now considering how much of a wretch Dojima is.
Not that the original game (and probably Kiwami) didn't show that. He just keeps getting worse though.

Sohei's a prick but the title's more about saying "this stone-faced dude who picks up phones really dramatically is also the biggest rear end-kicker in the entire Dojima crime family" so I'm cool with it.

Can somebody please explain the difference between a cabaret and a cabaret club? As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the cabaret has balcony seating, and a bigger back office.

It's explained by Odyssey's manager - cabaret clubs are like stripped-down versions of the big cabarets. They charge by the hour and have fewer amenities but still portray themselves as a classy establishment.

The Cabaret Club feels like the sort of thing I'm going to have to space out, it's decent but gets mind-numbing quickly.

Any tips on doing the Rush trainer's activity? The camera is in such a lovely spot, Kiryu ends up blocking the opponent and I can't even see if they're attacking or not.

You don't have to rely on the dodge technique - for the most part, just running around the arena works a lot better. Always be aware of the distance between you and your opponent so you know whether or not they're going to close the space with their attacks.

It's a pain in the rear end regardless.

I've only played Yakuza 1 and 2 before this so I forgot how much bloody stamina the plots of these games have, they just keep going but it's not because of filler so much as deliberate and thorough examination of every plot point and outcome.

There were a few sequences this one could probably have done without, though. The Bed of Styx and Benten Inn areas were way too weird and just came and went without much in the way of explanation. At least in Yakuza 2's subterranean golden castle I got to punch out a tiger or two.

Tachibana just expressed that he envies Kiryu, because he has real friends. He says he could never risk his life for someone else.

He said this after driving through a pack of Yakuza to rescue me, running over Kuze, one of their bosses, in the process. He says it's like the second time he's ever driven a car. And he has one loving hand.

Cause if not, holy poo poo.

It's not a mistranslation, you're just missing the context. Tachibana says he wants to be like Kiryu, risking himself for people without regard for the consequences. Hence the rescue.

god almighty, saejima’s portion of yakuza 4 is dull even if you don’t take the twist into account

tired of sewers

e: tbh i'm skipping a lot of content in this one because it's either unengaging or a retread. no more hostesses, no more arena battles, this dojo thing with saejima feels like a numbing waste of time

the multiple-level map is also a pain because the underground is barren and it just makes substories more confusing to access

having played up to Y4 so far, it has the worst story of the bunch and it's not a particularly close contest. Y2 is way too convoluted and uncomfortably racist at points, Y3's orphanage interludes are contentious, but Y4 is a handful of good moments scattered around in a plot that's barely college-undergrad level. there's classic symptoms of the writer's brain (or writers plural, i don't know how many worked on the script) going "what the gently caress are you doing" mid-writing- characters pointing out how stupid and outlandish plot developments are in-story, crazy plans excused by going "eh it'll work out" and then they do. i like akiyama but way too much hinges on him being the Amazing Impossibly Wealthy Man, he's like a character from a magic-realist novel who got lost and wandered into a crime drama. and that's not even getting into more mundane problems like the weak villains or the herky-jerky pacing - the way it spreads out characters means that, instead of the usual mounting action of the previous games (even 0), you're basically climbing a slippery mountain only to lose your grip and go all the way back down before you reach the top

like i said, there were good parts. sugiuchi's sendoff was genuinely affecting even if it had the infamous Rubber Bullets reveal threaded throughout it, akiyama had a lot of screen presence, and while the finale was a disaster i got an actual belly laugh from "everyone go find an rear end to kick". but i think i'll remember it most for its weaker moments, like the plotting problems, the tedium of the underground maps, and loving saito
