The PS4's "play the first part of the game before it's done downloading" feature hasn't panned out at all.

How, after 7 yakuza games, there's still a street thug in Japan who will just pick a fight with Kiryu for no reason is beyond me.
In Zero he's not a legend yet, and almost all the rest start with a period of him being out of the face smashing business, presumably long enough for these young and stupid street punks to have limited info on him. That's about all I've got.

The game is from 2015 though. 6 does have auto save.

Weird thing about this game: those just stop not very far into the game and give way to the normal kind of cutscenes.

This is my first Yakuza game, and so far so good. I'm a little sad to find out I have to manual save because that means I just lost 1hr of gameplay but at least I get to do the charity work of beating the piss out of drunkards again. I even poked around a bit to see if there was a save menu, maybe I'm blind. Are there save points?
Telephone boxes are save points.

Yeah. It's that behind the times. No one ever accused the Yakuza series of keeping on top of the latest gameplay trends. They finally implemented an auto save system, which has been standard in all other open world games for like ten years, as of last year.

Hopefully the game itself won't disappoint like Yakuza 5 did. With just two playable characters it should be much more focused at the very least.
It's also on the PS3 so not overwhelmingly awesome graphically, but lots of good high res textures.

I still consider 5 to be one of the best games (replaying it now) so if that let you down I don't know what you will think of this one...

I'd say most of the games have consistently funny writing for sub stories, yeah. Same as 0 or any others there were a few times in 6 when I couldn't stop laughing.

Edit: I've only ever played these games in Japanese, no idea the consistency of the English translation from game to game.

I love how consistent Kiryu's characterization always is.

Rule 1: Never compromise on anything ever.
Rule 2: If something interferes with Rule 1, beat it until it stops.
In 6 this actually sets him at odds with his friends like never before. It was a pretty black and white world up until that but things got very grey for a bit there.

Edit: it may have not even been intentional, maybe I was supposed to unconditionally root for Kiryu like usual, but I wasn't.

In the modern era of Yakuza I thought there wasn't anything like that. You can screw up on some sub missions but you should just accept those failures and learn from them same as street thugs accept and learn from being hit with a baseball bat.

Playing it a bit again, after finishing Kiwami and 6, I think combat against street goons really is way more difficult than the games after it. It seems like they attack more frequently and until your Rush ability is high enough that you can just dodge everything constantly or have Beast counter attacks, it can be a real problem sometimes.

Boss fights are about the same though.

No buttons do anything while running around Kamurocho besides L1/R1 making me walk, so I'm guessing this is some kind of skill you get later on. I just want to make sure in case I'm missing something blindingly obvious.
At least in Japan it's holding X. It's not so much faster than normal running but you can hear Kiryu breathing heavy when he does it.

Push down on the d-pad. Be careful though, the master ball has very little durability and costs a lot to repair. It's part of the lovely weapon system that has always been in the Yakuza series. The heat action for it is worth seeing though.

I thought Kiryu was always 30 when he went into prison at the start of 1 and then 40 when he came out, which means he's over 50 by 6.

Edit: by anime rules he could totally be a badass gangster by age 13 though, while looking like a 25 year old. But much to my relief the Yakuza series has always dodged stuff like that.

My memory of 2 is that no one thought Daigo would be a good chairman (including himself), just that he was the only one left alive with a clear claim to it that wouldn't immediately lead to infighting. Basically the same problem as trying to find a new king of a country when the current king when a whole bunch of their family was suddenly killed or whatever.

The rest of the series is him trying to grow into that role without running back to uncle Kiryu.

It's been awhile since I played it, but wasn't Dead Souls the only Yakuza game where the villain outright says that Kiryu always coming back just screws everything up, leaves things in a greater mess than when he started, and if he actually cared about the Tojo Clan then he'd actually step up as Chairman? Kind of weird that the non-canon spinoff would be the only one to outright say it.
Sometimes he comes back because of a sense of responsibility he has but probably shouldn't to the clan, but sometimes he gets wrapped up in their fights while he is just minding his own business.
