I didn't get a picture of the tiny little mommy bird that flew out of this nest when I poked it to figure out what this pile of stuff is on the extension cord I wound up last month in the garage, but there's at least five tiny eggs in there. I wish it wasn't inside the garage but I think we're going to let it stay for now. I think it's a finch or a sparrow but I didn't get a good look. Perhaps I'll feel less kind when the peeping starts but this is what's going on now and I'm not sure they'd survive outside. Not sure how it's getting food and water but it's a very small bird so I'm sure it's found a little entryway somewhere. Maybe I'll set up a motion camera sometime later when I haven't scared the bird so recently.

I posted a few days back with pictures of a nest a bird made inside the garage on a shelf. She's going to be left alone, but I was concerned that maybe she had built it with no way to get in or out and we keep the garage door closed most of the time. So, I set up a camera to make sure that things were okay. Good news, she seems to be fine and I think it's probably a Carolina Wren. So now I'm spying on birds with a security camera. Sorry about the watermarks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuqZCV1YjEI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck0I0jhSySE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9L4b54X8Gw

Anne Whateley posted:Carolina wrens are absolutely notorious for building nests in weird human places. Just from your first pic I figured that's what it was. Thanks for being a good host! If you want to give them a hand (especially in winter), dried mealworms or unsalted peanuts would be a hit. We'll probably encourage them to relocate but after the babies are out on their own. My car has mysteriously been getting pooped on inside the garage somehow! In the meantime I'm enjoying seeing what's going on out there. This morning Wren poppa showed up and gave the momma a snack. Then they took off together for 15 minutes or so. Seems to be about as long as the mom leaves the nest so far. I'm still not sure how they're getting in and out, but the mice do so it's possible they're using the same entrance at the corners of the door where the mice chewed holes. Maybe I'll put more cameras up to solve this mystery, but not today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asP9Ld9oFtE

The wrens that made a nest in my garage on a shelf on top a wound up extension cord now have hatched some babies. They're not really visible besides something moving around in there, but momma and poppa wren are both out on a lot of trips to bring back insects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icoQ2MeK0BI

The garage wren babies are now somewhat visible with their hungry little beaks. Momma wren has a big job giving each one an insect, she's been pretty busy the last few days: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IbIXA8e2SA

The Red Queen posted:That's in your garage, right? I feel like the outside world will be a real surprise to them when they're flying and mom and dad show them how to get out. Yeah, there's some windows in there, three small ones in one of the garage door panels and one large one on the opposite side, but everything is closed up most of the time. I'm a little concerned about fledglings being trapped in the garage and getting stuck on the floor, but I've also been concerned about the wrens getting in and out okay and getting enough food and water which so far has not been a problem for them, so I guess I'm going to not worry about it unless something obvious happens. I check out the recorded motion videos a couple of times a day (there's a lot of 10 second clips of momma wren just fidgeting around) so hopefully I'll have a better idea of what's going on when it gets closer to that time. I'm guessing we have a week or so, but I'm no birb expert.

The wren babies in my garage are pretty big now. I noticed last night that their parents didn't bring them anything from about 7pm until 5:45am. Even when their mom stayed with them she'd mostly take a break at night, though. I think it was about five days ago that she could barely fit into the nest and spent some time that night kind of sitting on the entrance with her tail hanging out. Since then she's moved out and it's just the babies' nest. According to the internet the parents have a new nest elsewhere, but will continue to feed the babies for the time being. The little ones will be learning to fly and leaving to be free any day now. I'm going to be keeping an eye on them because I don't want them all to get trapped in the garage. Their parents know how to get out but I don't think they do. After they were all fed this morning they calmed down a bit and now they're taking a nap, but this was just a little while ago. Four out of five eggs hatching is pretty good for a little wren family. I thought there were only three for the first week or so but I just couldn't see them all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZMDefVZJUo
