In isolation, perhaps. But PoE's development history shows a clear trend towards making tanking both less mandatory and less powerful. Fighter and Paladin's defensive capabilities got nerfed while their offence was buffed, enemies are more likely to break engagement than they were at release, newer maps have fewer bottlenecks than older ones. It's not unreasonable to assume that PoE2 will continue to disincentivise highly specialised builds and instead emphasise the importance of well-rounded party compositions that don't fall apart the minute one member is incapitated.

It's also why I think Lore was a great idea. CC is a very powerful tool in the game, and having scrolls means you're less reliant on casters to pull it off.

Edit: Though I do wish there was some benefit to having odd levels of Lore. Maybe the sequel will address that.

Barbarians and Rangers are amazing spell casters in my runs.

I backed this this morning following the email from Obsidian! Although I never ended up completing the first game back at release (I was hit with a few bad glitches and it took the wind out of my sails), I'm happy to see that the three characters I liked best have returned. Lowering the party limit to 5 is a bit of a bummer though, since I tend to play these sorts of games like a more interactive choose your own adventure story and I enjoy having lots of characters in my party to provide extra flavour and commentary on the world.

I think I'm going to restart my PoE1 file this weekend. What's the recommended difficulty to play at for someone who beat Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 on Normal?

I'd say play it on hard, it's a good difficulty that teaches the basics and you'll run into some stuff that will end you so occasionally you'll have to come back later.

Alternately, a Priest of Eothas in 1 that switches classes to a Cipher in 2 seems like a good in universe character.

Of course, it's also a sequel to a game we've all played. But the only real details we know so far are that it's still isometric, the specific stretch goals listed so far, which companions are returning, and that in the grand tradition of Ultima 7: Quest of the Avatar, there will be day/night cycles, NPC schedules, and weather.

Gonna spend a lotta time hunting questgivers in the rain, we are.

Ultima 6 had all that too, but I don't think the npcs really reacted to weather changes.

Eh, theoretically yes, but stacking Accuracy in PoE was so easy that you could pretty much always land your Fortitude spells by the time you hit the mid-game, aside from maybe in the dragon fights. There really wasn't anything preventing you from trivialising the game with Shadowflame apart from your own sense of honour.

Even on PotD, the game isn't so hard that you're prevented from brute forcing your way through most encounters. Trial of Iron is a bit different because you can't afford to screw up, but even then, you're given a lot of leeway. Which is fine with me because the alternative is going the SCS route where you need to have the correct counter to an enemy or else you're completely screwed. To a certain extent, tacictal versatility always comes at the expense of difficulty.

All dragons can be charmed, except for one dragon in the Llengrath fight, who can be dominated instead. It's probably the easiest way of winning these encounters.

If you invested in interdiction you could get a massive per encounter priest AOE that dazed and weakened enemies making them super vulnerable to CC.

I don't see how letting you use your spells in each fight dumbs it down. Is a cipher or a chanter a dumbed-down mage/priest? What does per-rest spell slots add that is of such intrinsic value over the proposed empowerment mechanic? You even admit it's functionally the same.

And remember that resting is never really difficult in PoE and they haven't said anything about reducing your ability to camp in the sequel.

I tended not to use priest/wizard/druid spells as much, but as soon as I had the focus/chants to blast off something useful you better believe I did. Making it per encounter will encourage me to use those powers and I won't feel like I'm wasting anything. If I need to spam some stuff, well that's what scrolls are for. It's a welcome change to me as well.

Zore posted:

Also casts and effects can be more limited since things are per encounter. Having 2 level 5 spells to cast makes encounters more tactical in many ways because you can't do the old 'save up all your casts and chain-gently caress the boss' by resting befor it

I gave her tall grass and just had her knocking people down with her crits, seemed to work.
