Mozi posted:would you rather they voted for trump? i don't understand your point the power of false alternatives has had a great influence on human history. americans remain united in a most important respect: if it came down to leveling the playing field btw america and everywhere else, we'd rather murder some brown ppl. what this means is that we'll thrash against trump's domestic policies and playbook, but the idea of a "coup" is outlandish bc no matter who is in charge, we like the american govt: it keeps us personally solvent and economically untouchable. everybody made a big to do about the 2008 crash, but the truth is it was way loving worse for everyone else, and the end result was to siphon a ton of money from the rest of the world into the US economy. you can watch this on a smaller scale in the eurozone: "hey guys wanna play with us, we'll guarantee the stability and growth of your economy and you'll benefit from our forward thinking ways and modern institutions" says germany, when what it really means is

I think people who get more conservative as they age probably weren't very liberal to begin with, they just didn't hold strong political beliefs and molded theirs to fit the social group they found themselves in (young liberals) Its not really a betrayal, just that they were never forced to confront how their ostensible political views affected them until it was visibly taking money out of their pockets, and when you're an adult you can cut people out of your life much easier when, say, they call you on losing your empathy or bring up inconsistencies in your political beliefs

Yeah, I'm 33 right now and pretty much just this shy of being a full-blown Socialist, I like my useless consumer poo poo and think free trade is good in theory, but I also believe in workers' rights and the people having more power over their work environment, etc. I don't ever see myself becoming conservative at all, in fact if anything the two weeks we've had of Trump have solidified my leftist stance and pushed me even harder to the left. Whatever Trump and Bannon and Pence are, I want to be the complete loving opposite of that because gently caress them.

It's an interesting subject, I should probably try and find some statistics on this as well as what the stats are on children's vs parent's political leanings. My two sibs and I are liberal and our parents are liberal, but my parents sibs are both split 2-1 liberal vs conservative.
