a friend recently got a gaming PC, shes not terribly good at more competitive games and im wondering what the hot online coop games are on Steam and poo poo. bonus points for games that work fine when it's just 2 or 3 players

You could try out Warframe. It's free-to-play and you can get pretty far without spending real money. If you get through the first seven or so planets and want to drop some money on it, you can wait for 75% or 50% off coupons for the in-game currency. Supports up to four players, but you can get by just fine with just two people. Lots of half-assed and poorly explained systems, though.

open roller coaster tycoon 2 has multiplayer. gets pretty crazy. for longer gaming sessions baldur's gate 2 multiplayer is pretty fun but only if you're both familiar with the mechanics already.
