Yeah, I have awful Anonymous-themed icon (earned from a Beat Hazard badge, randomly) that's worth more than a quarter. Most are poo poo because they're completely unreadable at the size they appear in text or just completely meaningless outside of whatever context generated them. The few I have that are worth anything seem to be partly so just because they're readable smilies of various sorts.

I get that it's a long game and that it was expensive to translate but that game is more than a decade old and looks like fried rear end. Traditional Japanese marketing is "charge as high a price as you think you can get away with while still making a profit", so the licensing price could have been less than reasonable or they could just be hoping to exploit Clannad's existing Western fanbase, such as it is.

There are hentai games - you just buy mildly sanitized versions on Steam, then go over to the dev's page to download or buy a patch that adds in the missing porn. It's not advertised on Steam but it's the first thing that gets brought up in reviews of said games.

So you don't even need to go that far to make a VN affordably.

I've actually been poking at making a VN for a while but I have neither art skills nor a ton of money to pay for art and I don't wanna go Full Umineko and make something with lovely MS Paint art There are a lot of artists out there that don't know what they're worth that can be exploited, at least until they wise up. Try not to do this, but if you must, they are out there. That being said, bear in mind making games still isn't even cheap for VNs (paying thousands of dollars just for the art is practically a given), they're just cheaper than making many other sorts of games. It's just the basic tools to do it with are comparatively easy and cheap.

I really really don't get the appeal of these thousands-of-achievements games on Steam. I mean, at least on a Xbox or whatever, you have your gamerscore, another meaningless thing, but it was a tangible system and it was hard to cheat your way into. (I suppose it's probably less hard now.) But on Steam, one can just buy a bunch of games and use hacks to activate all their achievements. I guess I are idiots that'll brag about anything. It's surreal that anybody cares about that number enough to worry about it, much less a number so easily manipulated. I guess what I'm saying is: how is this a thing? People buying crappy ripoff porn games is no mystery, though.

Veotax posted:To make it even worse, when AC1 eventually came to PS3 trophies didn't exist yet so those flags did literally nothing. The same is true on the Steam version, all collecting flags does is increment one of your progress counts on your pause screen - the game has no Steam achievements. About the best that can be said about collecting flags is doing so saves your game, so that can be useful. I don't think there are even any unlocks tied to getting them all. The scuttlebutt I heard is that the dev team was forced to put a collectible in by Ubisoft, and hated doing so, so they did it in an amazingly way and called it a day.

They were both developed by Ubisoft Montreal, but it's a 3,000 member subsidary that's seen some notable staff changes over the years. Granted, hatred for having to pick up flags is something anybody could develop by playing any Assassin's Creed game (and I say that as somebody who enjoys them for the most part).

I just roam the world to chill and pick up poo poo that's on the map. I'm playing Black Flag right now and just cruising the Caribbean is a great way to relax after work. A lot of the later games gave you tools to make the collectathons easier, made them less of a pain, and actually rewarded you for them. They're still pretty dumb but they're at least functional now. (And yeah, I have like 80 hours in ACIV for a reason.)

Vermintide is a massively unsubtle Left 4 Dead clone with equipment drops. Payday is similarly inspired. Dead Island also tried to copy a lot of L4D's magic in an open world format... badly. So they're out there. Evolve was made by some of the same devs, I don't know if it's fair to say they "aped"... themselves?

Yeah, given a lot of prolific bad Steam games publishers have websites that are little more than a logo and an e-mail address, it seems likely. Because that's how you promote your business to indie devs, zero information and no sales pitch, right?
