I've watched this argument go on throughout the day and didn't want to comment on it until I'd sat and thought it through. I don't think anyone involved has been necessarily wrong, much less offensive, and I wish people would take each other in good faith. It's not wrong to wanna correct yourself after realizing you mispoke, certainly taking time to consider how our behavior and our perspective conflicts with our political ideals is good practice. I don't think that even is the central conflict here. The problem becomes: why broadcast that, to the world? Why bother feeling the need, as a public figure with a platform, self-flagellate over something so irrevocably minor? The thing to really look at is the mentality that that would drive someone to this sort of public display, and as someone posted before, someone else to reply with "you're gonna do better next time and it'll be awesome" like - who talks like this? Faust committed no crime, no infraction, and for all intents and purposes, alcohol was involved at this event and everyone slips up their words when they've had a few.

Twitter is a social media platform designed by capitalists, for the profit of capitalists, with gamified social interaction. Everyone wants the dopamine hit of likes, followers, retweets, etc. - the "making the numbers go up" feeling that drives the popularity of the clicker game genre. It's an inherently individualist and consumerist platform, and hours upon hours of it drives people crazy - by design, Facebook's internal research team knows this. In real life, and actual social interaction, we generally operate on a system of social credit, give or take. We try to see the better in people we look up to, admire, are friends with, etc. You can spend an hour arguing with someone in a bar about socialism and politics that may disagree with you and take them in good faith to try and win them over. It's something worth doing if you're committed to such a political project that relies on a mass movement. This naturally isn't what we see in online, and it's manipulated and magnified into the conflict space of social media threads, people form their own tribes, and within these shared communities everyone is trying to make their own individual numbers go up, consciously or subconsciously, to satisfy a natural urge - of being liked, respected, whatever.

Now, realize that and when someone says something like "you're gonna do better next time and it'll be awesome" - that's an entirely individualist and capitalist understanding of power. It's an entirely self-centered view of seeing oneself as an authority figure as to which to judge everyone in view at all times with an entirely arbitrary and ever-changing set of rules that are never really shared. Yelling at everyone to do better as they improve at what, living up to what standard, it's an entirely nonsensical and nonconsensual system of social enforcement.

Many have tried to game the systems of platforms like Twitter by making outward displays of hostility, and it's certainly been very successful. Not that it certainly isn't to some degree necessary in our corrupt, decrepit, horrific, crumbling society of late-stage capitalism. However it's completely eroded any system of social credit and enable those addicted to completing that loop of finding something to broadcast and flag as "bad, this person is very bad, and should feel bad," get the dopamine rush of watching the numbers go up, and rinse their hands, having never tried to be constructive - because why should they? It's much more rewarding to be destructive, to see people at their worst, and constantly lash out at them for your own benefit. It's a nasty mentality people get dragged into by the very design of the platform and nobody really wants to reconsider how maybe the capitalist owned social media platform that exists solely to make other capitalists money might not be in their best interests, and in fact, exists to further cement the power of the ruling class by driving further and further fractures into the social fabric.

tl;dr It's just a tweet, sure. For something that's drummed up such a fluff today in the DSA thread I think there's deeper elements worth looking at and what of it is by design created to fracture and look at other people, people that are, for all intents and purposes, doing good work to repair our broken society, with a complete hostility, and more important, how it makes people feel so nervous, whether consciously or subconsciously, that they feel the need to make a public display of self-flagellation over such an incredibly minor turn of phrase.

I just want you all to know that "gently caress over" is a verbal phrase that never means anything sexual. And since someone asked, in the phrase "hosed over a barrel," over is a preposition and the verb is hosed.

But "hosed over a barrel" could also mean that a barrel was treated unfairly so idk

I love how this thread is slowly discovering what has been a part of Christian ethics for a long time: if someone else thinks it’s a sin, even though it might not be, don’t do it. Cf. Acts 16 where Paul circumcises Timothy in order to appease the Jews they were visiting in Anatolia. They wanted to convert them to The Way (ie Christianity before it was called such), and even though Paul’s vision assured him that the death of Jesus of Nazareth did away with the old laws, they still wanted to respect their audience in this nascent time.

and I don’t know if this just me being descended from a long and fairly unbroken line of german Lutheran pastors (even though I rarely go to church anymore), but maybe don’t swear in your speeches to the public.

also guys this dumb language debate is from a man correcting himself

the correct answer for absolutely everyone is "who gives a poo poo"

who gives a poo poo that he said the f-word, and who gives a poo poo that he wants to change that, it literally doesn't matter either way

let the man sjw himself, who gives a poo poo

This is so true. Protestantism is by its very nature fragmentary, and I see a lot of parallels in leftist organizing.

leftists by nature Care About Things which leads to them being fairly combative, which is generally a good thing but there are drawbacks such as constant infighting

Leftism doesn't really have the same built-in barrier to assumptions of good faith on the part of any opposition that Protestantism had, but yeah the parallels are there to be sure.

that’s also a good point. Say what you will about the right and their base, but uniformity is not among their problems, Flake Romney Corker et al notwithstanding
