I'm going to be checking out the Austin DSA's next meeting, since they're only a 20min drive from where I work. I'll very probably be joining, and intend to try to get some sort of collaboration going on with the DSA and my county Democrat party, though we'll see how that goes (they're all old as gently caress here, help).

Fellow goon GlyphGryph (OP of the DPP thread) also made a Discord server for helping out new folks join/create local parties. We currently have 47 people in it, and it tends to cycle between firey revolution and neurotic doomsaying depending on who's around, but I'd be more than happy to get some DSA folks in there to help get fellow goons active with the DSAr. Here's an invite to the server for anyone interested.

Hey if there are any central Texas goons in here, I'm in the process of starting up a Williamson County DSA with some other organizers up here. If you're not busy on the evening of Sunday, April 2. We'll be meeting in the back room of Lamppost Coffee, so depending on how many people there are there may or may not be enough space for seating (we're expecting ~10 people, but it could be more). I'll make another post next week when I have the time confirmed.

Is there any good resources for setting up DSA branches/chapters? While a good chunk of us are already members, I haven't actually been involved in much organizational efforts so this is all pretty new to me.

Alright, so I said I'd update y'all and I am now: Wilco DSA will be having its first (unofficial) meeting this Sunday, April 2, at Kerbey Lane, 2120 N Mays St, Round Rock. We'll be meeting at 7PM out on the patio, and discussing organizing, plans, etc., so if you're in Williamson County, TX and want to join up, or from a nearby DSA chapter and want to help us out, please come by!

So we held our first meeting yesterday, was really small, but I feel like it was productive. Had 8 people there, 5 of which are Wilco residents and DSA members and 3 from the Austin DSA chapter (both the co-chairs and another member). The meeting did end up going over by a lot (over half an hour!), mostly because it was extremely informal and we had a lot of conversations about what we could do to help build membership, what we wanted to focus on, and how we could create awareness. Overall, I think I'm fairly pleased with how the meeting went, and was glad I didn't have to try to make people actually speak up.

Next step is to get in contact with existing DSA members in my county, find a better meeting location, and start looking into meeting up with local organizations to get a feel for the area.

Libraries are a great place for meetings, free to reserve a space, accessible to all people and public transit, and a subtle reminder of how the gov can be a force for good, also safe.

Unfortunately, the libraries in Williamson County aren't free, they cost $15/hr+. Right now we're looking at invading the IKEA food court, or if we're lucky we might be able to get a couple hours free at a hotel since one of the austin dsa co-chairs knows people that work there.

Hey, that's me! I'm the co-chair of Wilco DSA! Right now we're struggling on meeting places, yeah, because Williamson County loving sucks and has nowhere you can meet that isn't a crowded restaurant or cost $50/hr minimum. We're meeting at a member's house in Leander this Sunday if you want to drop by! Another member and I won't be there since we'll be in Chicago for the convention, but the meeting's gonna be headed up by my fellow co-chair and it should hopefully be pretty productive!

EDIT: Speaking of the convention, is there any plans for a goon outing one night? I'll be bringing a couple board/party games since our delegation has a bunch of nerds in it and gently caress yeah board games, but I think it'd be kinda neat to go meet some goony neckbeards for a drink or something.

Hoo boy. Hopefully he can do something like "step down, run next national meeting as people learn who he is" or something. Hopefully he doesn't make it all about him being wronged or something.

Danny is and always will be a staunch supporter of the cause. He would never say or do anything if he believed for a microsecond that it could potentially harm DSA. I am not a part of Austin DSA leadership, just a member, but knowing Danny, he's talking to the NPC so they can determine what is the best possible way forward.

It's loving sickening to see so-called comrades, whom I just spent 4 days in solidarity with, completely throw everything we're supposed to be out the window to race to be the first to condemn someone without information.

after reading that bio again he didn't obscure anything and this is the DSA being guilty of high twitter.com crimes

As an Austin member, obviously 100% agreed. However, you're not completely accurate. While the absolute vast majority of his work was in organizing non-police state workers like EMT and prison staff (cooks, not guards), and helped prevent prisoners being forced to have tattoos identifying them as HIV+, in his capacity as a CWA organizer, he also did in two instances organize a sheriff's office that was asking for collective bargaining powers. He's done an obscene amount of good, and I in no way think he was "guilty of omission" in his bio, but in his 40-year stint as an organizer for labour organizations he did end up organizing cops.

It's also noteworthy imo that he hasn't been associated with CLEAT in any capacity for 4+ years, and the LinkedIn profile that shows up when you google his name was created immediately before the convention and is most assuredly fake. It shows him as a current CLEAT organizer (not true), shows that as his only work (not true), and shows his only connections as CLEAT (not true). Danny doesn't use the internet, period, and even his emails are done by someone else.

The most active members of my local are basically some degree of libsoc or anarchocommunist, and since joining I've gone from "I think Socialism is pretty cool I guess" to "Revolution now! Smash the capitalists and burn their institutions of oppression to the ground!" under their tutelage. Hell, a good chunk of our delegation voted in favour of the amendments and resolutions that called for disengagement from the Dems.

That is a real position of the DSA? I thought someone was just being cheeky when they tweeted that out during the conference. To me it seems like a naive reaction to American style mass incarceration that swings so far to the other extreme resulting in stupidity. Not all crime is caused by material deprivation so I wouldn't be in favor of abolishing prisons and the police even in a Utopian post-scarcity society.

The stance "calls for" the abolition of police and private prisons, but when you actually read it it calls for criminal justice reform, iirc. I think it was part of the Praxis slate.

It would help if Danny made a statement. I agree that he deserves the right of reply, but it's been almost a week and there's still mostly radio silence from him. I understand he's not very online, but it shouldn't be too hard to come up with a statement explaining his choices for others to distribute. The longer he waits, the more antsy people are getting.

Also, if you're getting antsy like myself, a good option is to throw yourself into a local fight. I'll be in Charlottesville this weekend with comrades from chapters in the area, and we'll be singing anti-fascist and anti-Confederate songs for the counterprotestors as a block. Don't let drama distract you too much from the work.

I'll agree this is a valid concern. I think Danny should've made a statement back on Monday or Tuesday, but he's been asked to not make statements and to Trust The Process™, and by extension he's asked the Austin chapter to not make statements on his behalf, and I trust his judgement in this completely. Unfortunately for me, though, I'm also red mad and nude so I'm gonna post anyways.

In my opinion all that his silence and acquiescence to the requests of the interim committee has succeeded in doing is allowed for gross misrepresentation of the situation, with members of the interim committee attacking his character and equating him to a racist murderer. Calling him anti-democratic and passive-aggressively attacking him while claiming to investigate the situat- oh, sorry, investigating the extent of his "uncomradely, anti-democratic, and misrepresentative behavior" is a hosed up thing and has destroyed any legitimacy of the committee for me.

EDIT: I should qualify this by saying that if they had kept their statements neutral or had given Danny the opportunity to speak instead of asking him to keep quiet and then attacking him, I would have fully accepted any judgments from the steering committee. It's the unofficial statements of their members that make seriously question their commitment to the democratic process.
