We decided in the absence of that we would start up an affiliate organization called the SaDoL. It's still in the rough preliminary stages but the main idea of the group is to: 1. Provide an opportunity for collaboration across chapters within a region 2. Create and distribute socialist literature framing it with themes from the American Revolution and Enlightenment figures 3. Support and promote organizations and institutions within our local communities. We want to be community builders and seen as a positive force within them.

The DSA is a group with limited resources and everything has to have two purposes, accomplish something good and also help the overall goal. Homelessness is a loving tragedy but handing out gift cards doesn't accomplish anything meaningful nor does it build allies because the majority of homeless people are not in the position to be part of a political movement. You'd be a lot better off helping working families get groceries for their kids and then turning them into political allies. Helping the homeless, veterans, poor working families and senior citizens is exactly what we should be doing - they are the disenfranchised either by means or by lack of options aside from same as usual politicians, and are exactly the group of people we need supporting us. The only suggestion I would say when doing these things is take pictures and let local reporters know that a bunch of dirty socialists are helping out those in need in their communities.

I've been quiet, but I've got an impending small roomate moving in that's probably going to take up a lot of my time for the next decade or so. I'm rather surprised I was only able to find a handful of local DSA people online, but we're holding regular monthly meetings and getting some new people interested. The problem with my handful is we can never get everyone together at one time. I'm tempted to just try an online meeting soon at some point to see what everyone's interest/willing engagement is, as we are still two people shy from siging their name to OC paperwork, and I have a husband/wife that initially said they were down to signing, then haven't responded back to that at all. I'm working with national to get in contact with some members who are just living under rocks for whatever reason. Meh.
