Socialists make the distinction because some socialists want decision making to be centralized in a single organization, and others (especially anarchists) want it to be spread out among a bunch of co-equal local groups. Both groups want it to be democratic, just in different ways, so the one that wants a centralized structure becomes democratic centralist. Also we need to specify the "democratic" part explicitly because

Yeah, I like working as a non-party. Aside from the flexibility, putting primary pressure on dems to get them to move left is a low-risk high-reward strategy, rather than risking a vote splitting scenario like what let Paul LePage come to power in Maine. Eventually ousting a big name like the Tea Party did to Eric Cantor would be a huge piece of leverage.
