Eustace posted:NC DSA member here. I'm working on getting a chapter organized in Asheville. Do any of y'all know what other socialist groups think of the DSA? I'm pretty new to the leftist circular firing squad, so I wanted to get a feel for what the other socialist groups in town are going to accused me of. don't worry about it so much, imo

owl_pellet posted:I've been reading about the DSA's stances both on their website and on Wikipedia. I think I would ultimately like to join, and I would like to go to a local chapter meeting to find out what they are working on locally, but I am also curious about something that I would like to get opinions on from people in the thread. Wikipedia says that the DSA doesn't always endorse a presidential candidate but when they do their endorsements historically seem to have been Democrats and usually not particularly left-leaning Democrats at that. Why is that? Why not Socialist candidates? I believe the general attitude is to only endorse candidates that realistically could win on the national level. keep in mind the DSA is very decentralized, so individual chapters can disagree with national's decisions. as far as I know, they've only endorsed presidential candidates like 4 times - mondale, jackson, kerry (which is the most suspect one, but given what was going on in 2004...), and obama. they also endorsed bernie.

i went to a electoral working group meeting for boston dsa and had an interesting time. the agenda was voting on who to endorse in upcoming elections. we started the meeting saying we would only endorse socialists, but by the end had voted to endorse multiple people who explicitly said they were not socialists. i was fairly miffed. it was my first meeting so I didn't push too hard, but yeah. not cool. at one point, someone brought up the fact that one candidate was backing charter schools, and there was some back and forth on whether this was okay. one of the guys in the group asked how charter schools polled in that district and i almost burst out laughing. folks, don't join dsa if ur just a liberal.

slicing up eyeballs posted:It came out that there's a mechanism where a chapter can get dues kicked back to them if members registered through the chapter, but it was never publicized. That and the uncertainty of where dues are going are serious problems. Fortunately, there's an amendment being proposed to codify 50% dues kickback to chapters: national conventions stipulating the rules for the following year are extremely common for organizations like this

apropos to nothing posted:I'm not a member of DSA so I have no clue. My understanding is anyone is able and to join so long as they pay dues to national and don't do a couple of things that are specifically banned. I am sure there are cops who are part of DSA right now. I feel like this is a mistake and I've explained why. Police officers engage in anti-union and anti-working class activity often times as part of their job, which makes it very hard for them to be brought into class struggle, at least on the correct side anyway. yeah technically there is currently no way to prevent a cop from joining the national DSA. local chapters have their own bylaws tho.
