Nick trains with Shields, the only guy who has been able to keep up with welterweight Maia on the mat.

Lol, keep up? Shields thoroughly outgrappled Maia, imo it wasn't especially close.

Nick has never been submitted, and took Condit's back effortlessly during the past minute of their fight.

Outside of Maia and Jacare, the Diaz Bros have some of the nicest BJJ in the game.

I dunno what my point was, cuz I think Nick will still definitely lose a ground battle with Maia

It was a split decision where neither fighter took much damage from strikes or was in danger of being submitted. Neither guy even managed to establish a dominant position for any particular length of time. I agree Shields clearly won, because he made Maia play his game and mostly got the better of him, but I didn't want to overstate it.

I need to rewatch (hahaha, not) but from memory I thought both guys did ok but jake had way more time on top.

He Maia'd Maia just like Maia Fitch'd Fitch.
E: not as dominant but still enbarassing

Unless he' s really lost a step (which is possible how long he's been out) he still beats everybody in the division.

I don't see him beating Woodley or Thompson at this point. Lawlor would be competitive but I might pick GSP.

I think he would beat Woodley easily. I don't want to see that fight only because it would validate all of Woodley's whining.

Dangersim posted:

Why though? Is it because gsp's probably not the same anymore or because you really think tyron could beat regular gsp?

I think wonderboy gets taken down and destroyed, and Woodley get picked apart from range.

To be honest I don't see GSP "easily" taking down Wonderboy at this point. Wonderboy will stay way on the outside and I don't think GSP has anything at all for his striking. It'll either go like the Hendricks fight or the Rory fight.

I don't see GSP taking down Woodley nor hurting him on the feet. I see this going like the GSP v Hendricks fight. Woodley won't respect his jab like he did to Rory and should find an opening to hurt Georges.

As far as how GSP will look coming back, I've been watching this sport for nearly 2 decades and NOBODY comes back close or better than they were in their prime*. Even Jon Jones is going to look a lot worse when we finally see him again.

*People are going to bring up the rare exception like Dom or something who despite beating excellent competition after a layoff, didn't look "better than before" IMO. Time closes every gap, even skill/talent. Like unless GSP has totally revamped his game he is going to be one of the most predictable fighters in the octagon. How much tape is out on him at this point?

Speaking of old guys making comebacks, am I absolutely insane for believing that BJ Penn matches up well and would have easily beaten Bendo and Gray had Frankie not pulled his card?

He already did imo (took steroids to win a boring decision over OSP who has since lost twice, once to an unranked guy making his UFC debut)

Yeah.

You don't get better at something by not doing it.

I think he wouldve had a better chance against either of those guys than Frankie but i could see either of them taking him down and grinding out a decision

See I don't think they mix up takedowns with effective strikes enough to take down BJ. Frankie did not have an easy time in the first fight and he was absolutely the best technical MMA wrestler at the time. He knew exactly when to fight the hands, bail on attempts, etc. The other guys tend to just pick up their opponent and trip/toss, which I think BJ could have resisted. BJ's weakness is and was angles and I don't think those guys have them.

Remember BJ wrestled the poo poo out of Fitch right after losing to Frankie. I see those two guys being more similar to the former than the latter.

Before you all poo poo on Bendo again remember that this would have been the end-of-WEC era Ben Henderson. That's not an easy LW fight for anyone anywhere.

Bendo is great but even after losing to Frankie, BJ was undisputedly the best sub WW fighter of all time.

manyak posted:

He only wrestled Fitch for the first part of the fight though then got tired which is why it was a Draw, and these presumably wouldve been 5 round fights. And bendo has good conditioning and wouldve had a size advantage over BJ versus Frankie who was smaller than BJ. I think Bendo matches up pretty decently with him in a 5 rounder

Almost everybody had a size advantage against BJ, that was kinda his thing. But anyways what would Bendo actually do in that fight? His striking sucks and I don't see him being able to hold down or GnP BJ Penn. I mean Pettis outgrapped Bendo in both fights. BJ would have boxed him up.

I.N.R.I posted:

predicting what someones gonna do and stopping them from doing it are 2 different things. or woodley might never have been champion

But Woodley's last couple fights have actually been pretty unpredictable? I thought he would lose to Wonderboy ala Johny Hendricks, but he fought a great fight with an excellent gameplan. I have him winning the rematch.

It's fun reminiscing on old times but it's absolutely crazy that BJ would probably lose to any of the top 15 in practically any division at this point, when there was seriously a time when you would have been laughed out of the forums if you suggested RDA, Stephens or Poirier would have absolutely anything for BJ loving Penn. Some guys that were journeyman at the time (Miller, Lauzon, Tibau) and could not even get anywhere near a title shot are now guys that would be favored pretty handily over him.

Time is not kind to anybody and it's kinda why even without seeing him, I'm not confident GSP is going to have anywhere near the success he has realized in the past.

What about his gameplan was unpredictable given his previous fights? For some reason people thought that the Karate guy who fights with his hands at his waist wouldn't get hit by the guy that closes distance really quickly and throws a blistering right.

Ugh how utterly effective it could be against the best striker in the division. Y'all are acting like wonderboy wasn't a 2:1 favorite and considered the uncrowned champ for like a year and a half prior to the fight.

Woodley beat wonderboy in every aspect of MMA. I didn't see any of you predict that...
