Wd should find a group of rational non-idiots and ask them to form a body guard for us. With the prior captain, the future president and so many military police dead it's pretty obvious we're the next target of things go south for him. Buuuuut. This is a ship. It relies on so much technology, all it would take is a glitch for the captain and half his loyal supporters to be fried alive or exposed to the void of space as a valve goes wrong. Just saying. Given how it's going to take hundreds of years for populations to start linking up there's going to have to be several 'countries' that have no contact for a generation or two. A The cliffs and surrounding plains are devoid of major vegetation because they don't have alot of water. This is normal for arid lands. Pumping water up will allow us to turn the area into a green zone. The problem is this won't be sustainable with large populations as we'll deplete the river, however food should be plentiful to start with and if we're being sustainable then we should be keeping population down anyway. Deep cliffs mean we don't have to worry about flooding, and the long river means we can spread out considerably decreasing the chances of catastrophic loss from a disaster. I think it's the best bet for a 'stable' location that'll let us establish.
