Of all the teams doing well this season the Caps are definitely the most stacked with 1st rounders, but all those teams have a good chunk of high picks throughout the top of the roster. Really, every almost every team has at least a few throughout the roster and some of the under-performing teams are pretty stacked with 1st and 2nd round players (Colorodo).

To me, the most interesting outlier is Pittsburgh who are completely the opposite in being very good with tons of low or undrafted players and a lot from outside the org: http://www.rosterresource.com/nhl-pittsburgh-penguins/

Boston also has very few high picks but, you know, isn't very good.

Columbus has a bunch of former first rounders, but most weren't drafted by the team itself:
-Foligno (2006 28, Ottawa)
-Gagner (2007 6, Edmonton)
-Hartnell (2000 6, Nashville)
-JMFJ (2005 3, Carolina)
-Jones (2013 4, Nashville)
-Murray (2012 2, Columbus)
-Wennberg (2013 14. Columbus)
-Werenski (2015 7, Columbus)

They traded a former first rounder of their own (Dano) to get Saad and another (Rychel) to get Harrington. If you want to go a bit further back, Nash was traded for a package including Dubinsky and the pick which turned into Rychel.

Interesting to note four of the CBJ's top six were first rounders. Nutivaara was a 7th and Savard was (I think) a 3rd.

As for the Caps...I dunno man, too many years of them being one of the best teams in the league, if not the best team, to jump on the "this is totally their year!" bandwagon, and even if you are the best team in the league that doesn't mean the playoffs are a formality.

Caps aren't going to score 5-6 goals per game the rest of the way.

To be fair, when you play like rear end like they did against Vancouver (though some of that could have been Miller in the "goalie who just couldn't be solved" department a la Condon and Johnson) and whatever the New Jersey game was supposed to be, as well as blowing half of a six-goal lead in three minutes against the Rags, you're deserving of some negatives being pointed out. Play like that and you're getting swept the gently caress out in the first round.

Now, if they're referring to something longer term like Torts not being completely happy with otherwise solid wins like he was at times during the 16 game win streak, then I get it.

The Hall/Larsson and Subban/Weber trades were entertaining as hell and surely the NHL must see that they're great for the sport? They've gone big time with the "recent NHL players/alumni in the organization" thing in recent years. Freddy Modin, Chris Clark, Jody Shelley, Blake Geoffrion, and Jarkko Ruutu all have roles with the team and Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre has been an ambassador and occasional guest color analyst on radio broadcasts (Modin did radio Monday night, too). They'd been coming out of the post-streak hangover they'd had, but are consistently looking better, which is reassuring. I think they're 9-10-1 since now which would be a stretch we'd have killed for as CBJ fans at times over the years, but kinda looks not so good now. Feels good man.
