product development is dead. some executive reads dumb blog posts about foldable phones in the bathroom then the whole industry copies each other chasing a market that probably isn't there with a product that's not ready for prime time

i can hold my (i)phone( 12 mini) up to the deadbolts on my front or back doors to unlock them, which works via nfc, and works even if the house has no power or wifi, meaning its actually dependable instead of needing to grab keys when leaving to walk the dog in case internet or power happens to go out

that nfc functionality apparently requires hardware that wasnt in older iphones than the xr and xs, which were announced in fall 2018, and is also used for the apple carkeys and hotel keys

A $5 magnet could open your deadbolts as well.

assuming the screen survives normal usage this could actually out work well for them. I don’t think it will be very good but I think it will sell

kind of doubt there's some durability breakthrough in the wings though, and at current failure rates it is basically pretty wasteful. but who knows, remains dangerous to bet against material science progress

quote:

"As the above tests demonstrate... DoorDash routinely charges iPhone users more than Android users for reasons wholly unrelated to delivery and service costs," the complaint claims. "DoorDash likely charges iPhone users more because studies suggest that iPhone users make more money than Android users," it concludes, citing a blog post that rounds up a number of broad surveys and statistics about iPhone versus Android users.
