my boss at work tried to get me to explain the new points system for nascar and then suggested that "they awards points based one every lap and give the leader a giant bonus so it makes people really want to win"

Do you always have a caution after each segment or were they just timely wrecks? the segment thing is new for the 2017 season, and yes, they throw a yellow after one ends last year Truck had a similar thing they were experimenting with, where after 20 minutes of green flag racing, a caution would be thrown but that's gone now

CBJSprague24 posted:I find funny that NASCAR both implemented a system which creates cautions while simultaneously creating a rule intended to reduce cautions. to be honest its weird because I both don't want to agree with a stupid rule, but at the same time, getting cars that are basically wrecked off the track and have no real chance for contention doesn't bug me too much because if you cant get a car fixed and up to regulation speed in 5 minutes of caution means you're a few laps back and essentially out any way I'm trying to think of the last time a severely wrecked car had any sort of positive impact on a race like that positive impact. not comedy gold impact like Gordon in Phoenix or Kenseth at Martinsville

You're right what would sped it up was instead of 40 caution laps (80% of which are legitimate and also included a red flag) we had 37 or 38 caution laps instead.

Norns posted:And how many caution laps did we have before that 3rd segment? Sorry stage not segment. 21 laps over 4 yellows and 1 red flag 4 to clean up after the 83 after it tried to pit and then didn't slow down and 7 laps after the #18 wrecked The other 10 laps and 2 yellows were the caution flags. (6 on segment #1 and 4 on segment #2) The other 4 cautions and 19 caution laps were in segment 3.

WindyMan posted:This is something that the new stage format was never going to fix. IMO, the racing got worse as the number of cautions went up because teams were starting to get used to knowing that there would be a caution likely to come. They were content to circulate and tick laps off rather than racing hard to gain as much time as they could. All that time advantage would be lost with an inevitable yellow flag anyway, so there was no point in risking to push it in the beginning or middle stages of a race. the 6 non-competition cautions were brought out mostly because of restrictor plate racing, an idiot, or a tire going down

No junk cars, everything was turned out professionally and it was known as a hard to win at place because of that. No field fillers at all.
