For this week's contribution, I bring something from 1948. Per the description:

quote:

Meet Charley, your jovial cartoon guide to Britain’s changing towns and cities. Interestingly, the New Towns Act of 1946 is not explicitly mentioned in this film, with the recommendations presented as if they had been conjured up by a popular movement. Halas & Batchelor worked with the Central Office of Information on seven Charley films which communicated many of the landmark policies of the post-war Labour Government.
There is something a bit odd and morbid about realizing that your city is trashed, and instead choosing to start over somewhere else (you know, rather than clean it up). It's like Randy Marsh wanting to 'bail' on a gentrified South Park.

Here now is Halas & Batchelor: Charley in New Town:

Found this thread going down the rabbit hole trying to find this deranged underground cartoon that some girl animated (and narrated) about a dog that was homicidal or had some sort of sexual deviancy... It's been a while and it came up in a conversation and nobody can remember it because it's been like, 6 years and Courage the Cowardly Dog and any number of "generic name-the-dog" cartoons are the black hole from which no SEO could escape trying to find this.

And just so I'm actually CONTRIBUTING something, this animation :nws: for being super violent.

We can give it a go if you like. What else can you remember about the short? Was it stop motion, hand drawn, or CGI? Rough black and white (think: 80s CalArts), or finished color? Did it look really old (mid century), or did it look like something that came out later? Did it air as part of a festival? Some of the stuff I have found to date came from Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation and other film festivals. :v:

Autumn is typically a time of transition, when people dust off old resolutions in preparation for the holiday season and New Year's Eve. Our (sadly racist at times) friends at That Company know all too well, which brings about a charmingly demented short of theirs from 1951 called No Smoking:

While more still shots than actual fluid animation, the content for this short seemed appropriate for these modern times. Funny how stuff from decades past still carries weight! :v:

quote:

A parable about the consequences of being a bystander to evil, from a disturbing poem by Maurice Ogden, read by Herschel Bernardi. Shadows and shifting geometric planes lend a Chirico-like quality to Julian's animation. Great musical score by Serge Hovey.

About the film, Steve Goldman writes: "Les Goldman was my father. Creating this film was one of the most important accomplishments of his life. He was inspired to make this film after hearing the poem 'Hangman' read on Pacifica Radio in Los Angeles by Les Claypool. My father almost single-handedly raised the money to make the film, with $100 and $200 donations from friends and associates. Paul Julian, Serge Hovey, and Herschel Bernardi were friends and colleagues of my father. He elicited their help in making the film. Though the poem on which the film is based has Holocaust parallels, the poet, Maurice Ogden, was actually writing about America during the McCarthy era. Ogden was an actor and writer who was denied work and persecuted by the House Un-American Activities Committee during the 1950's and early 60's for allegedly having been a member of the Communist Party many years earlier."

I tried sniffing around the Wiki article for Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation - the closest thing I could think of is one that may prove to be the hardest to find. Around 1997, which would be Volume 4, there was a short listed under C. Miles Thompson called Stubbs (2:59), which I suspect could be the short you're hunting down.

Spike and Mike Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_and_Mike%27s_Festival_of_Animation#Volume_1
IMDB listing for C. Miles Thompson: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1976683/

Considering that the director I am suspecting went on to do bigger and more kid friendly things, I wonder if he had that short yanked from the internet.

In case I missed someone mentioning it, don't miss Off the Air on Adult Swim. If you have a Roku or other device that has the Adult Swim app, you can watch every episode. Some animations, like the one below, are contracted just for the show. Other animations though are shortened, censored, or excerpts as the show wouldn't be long enough to include all the animations in full. There are fans that make their own "episodes" on YouTube, if you just search YouTube for "Off the Air."

https://vimeo.com/288133987

Interesting lecture by the animator about the above:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BIncIPSyII

A couple more that were memorable (to me):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT2L2TwD0pc

https://vimeo.com/52410580

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuJqUvBj4rE
(This was too long to air on an episode and aired by itself; there are nine different animators who contributed)

Also, whether or not you like Million Dollar Extreme, the animations and show openings and such for World Peace were cool, and most all of them were aired but had all text censored. The uncensored versions were posted in recent months on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT8vPNsrACo&t=231s

Some of the censored vs. uncensored

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-Dng-yYNSI

When Adult Swim found out the "1 infinity" symbol is from the cinema shooter James Holme's notebooks, I think they freaked out and didn't know how much coded or hidden poo poo might be in all the text, so they just censored it all.
