I was watching classic Simpsons clips and this got me thinking that Simpsons was probably one of the earliest shows to show video games as just a regular thing that kids do.

I think that late 90s-early 00s period of TV in general was a bit of a cultural low point. Wasn't that the height of blatant trashy-ness with very little nuance or a moral lesson to reflect upon the trash? Jerry Springer, WWF Attitude era, reality tv, When ___ Attacks, etc.

At the time I want to say that this period of Simpsons felt like it was reflective of it's time moreso than people tend to consider in these good vs bad Simpsons discussions. Sure it never recovered and only got worse, but still.

I have never thought about it really was like that. Really, why was everything so nasty?

I think it's more just that they stopped working so hard and so diligently at being funny. Once I found myself not thinking back over an episode and giggling again at all the things that had made me burst out laughing in the moment, it stopped being special.

If in the golden they wrote a single gag 30 times over and nowadays they write single gag 0,75 times over on average, there's bound to be difference in quality.

wait what? i get that people can often misinterpret the message of a film, and something like American History X supposedly wound up making nazis even more popular, but how the gently caress does anyone watch FMJ and think to themselves: "yeah, i definitely wanna be a part of THAT!"?

Film is not about horrors of war and how system of violence uses violence to mold its members to become users of violence themselves.

It is about how through trial and tribulations private Joker rises to the challenge of Animal Mother and becomes a true killer.

And why wouldn't you want to be a killer? Are you pussy or what?

Still baffled it came out in 2007 and made $536 million but they haven't gotten around to putting out a sequel yet. It's not like they have to care about quality.

If they struggle to make enough filler for 22 minute episode, then 90 minute movie is too much.

I’ve read several times (most likely in this thread) that the Simpsons’ writers thought it was going to end around season 8 or 9, hence the shift to more experimental episodes and cynical tone.

How did its status at Fox (now Disney) change so dramatically though? What changed that made the show go from good, popular, but on the brink of cancellation, to terrible but essentially un-killable?

9/11 happened. If I remember correctly, ratings started to grow almost immediately.
