I realize this account isn't Official Simpsons Canon but did anyone ever actually see the "Southern Missouri" ending of Behind the Music? I lived near MO at the time and am almost positive we got the "Northern Kentucky" version.

I definitely would have remembered if that was what they'd said since speculation about what state Springfield was actually in was still a pretty big deal back then.

This is sort of the opposite of the lowest point of the Simpsons, but the New Yorker just dropped the first long-form interview John Swartzwelder has ever given.

7. Skinner going to the 4-h club (i don't know what this means but I guess an old timey place for kids to hang) and its broken down in a dilapidated part of the city showing that he's totally out of touch with what kids do and where they go

Sorta kinda like a non-gendered Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts but my impression is that it's definitely nowhere near as popular as either of those, despite the membership numbers claimed in that article. (edit: in keeping with the 'Skinner's out of touch' aspect, note that the vast majority of the photos in the wikipedia article are from the 1920s-1960s lol)

I'd forgotten how that entire scene leading up to that Skinner line is just banger after banger.

I've got a real gun Morty. I'm gonna kill you today, Morty. You're actually gonna die! I'm gonna kill you then I'm gonna kill myself!

Anyone who liked that and Smiling Friends would probably do well to dig up the Damo and Darren shorts on YouTube from the same guy.

I've seen that photo before but never knew it was staged for TV. Also he confirms that no one picked Maggie in Fox's contest so they had to draw a rando for the winner.

I read an article recently that pointed out that while 60s rock was embracing peace anthems, and didn't really start to get seriously anti-war until the 70s, there was also a wave of highly successful "support the troops!" country anthems at the same time. And it was by and large the same people listening to both.

Five weeks at the top of the charts in 1966 - to tie it back to the Simpsons, Homer actually has a copy of it, as seen when John Waters' character is leafing through their album collection.

Wasn't there also some contest to decide what state Springfield is in? Like that matters at all.

There was a contest among like 6 or 8 Springfields to, if I remember correctly, have the premiere or a special screening or something. I lived in one of them at the time and scored a Simpsons movie poster that says “filmed on location in Springfield, [state]!” Which is mildly interesting to have. I don’t know which city won in the end.
