I was gonna post and say wow noone mentioned principal and the pauper but ding ding there it is

It isnt even a bad episode and if it actually annoyed you as a kid then youre a freak

The writers and actors hate it and consider it a mistake because it set the precedent for throwing established characters out the window to fit whatever zany plot they invent, but compared to those awful clips from the newer seasons it's a goddamn masterpiece.

Season 8 is where you can really see the decline in quality speeding up though. At this point the show isn't on life support, it already died and decomposed and they're just parading it's skeleton around like a marionette.

i assume thats because anyone looking up the simpsons on wikipedia is doing it to figure out why it still exists

Who is watching it anyways? I can't imagine that the 30+ crowd who remembers the good years does, and I can't imagine anyone over 12 looking at it now and thinking that it's edgy or funny compared to other shows.

Does anyone else think that the episode where Mr. Burns gets all those real ballplayers to work at the plant so they could beat the Shelbyville plant's softball team at softball was a textbook example of guest stars working out perfectly? It feels like the writer's didn't really kiss the players' asses the way they started to with later celebs. Or maybe the baseball players didn't take themselves as seriously as later celebs did.

I couldn't find "I heard a guy got killed in New York, and they never found out who did it."

The parody song used for this ended up being more well known than the original.

you're getting some real-life boobs in your face there. the only reason to pay for physical pictures of naked people in 2017 is if you are a luddite or 80+ years old and don't get that dang internet thing.

They were always super partisan. I mean Quimby being a horndog is one thing, but they make it as clear as possible that the Republicans 'Evil Dracula style headquarters whose candidate commits mass voter fraud and flies off on a rant about how people love despotic tyrants instead of true democracy' were way worse.

Eh, all the way back in season 3 you had this:

Lazy garbage clipshows were a problem with US shows in the 80s/90s in general, not the Simpsons in particular.

The 138th Episode special is probably the only clipshow of any program of that era that was good (if it even counts when most of the content was previously unseen or on the Tracy Ulman show).

The Simpsons writers were self-aware of it. The first clip show where Bart puts the beer in the paint shaker was called "So It's Come to This".

There'd be a certain charming simplicity if it was just three pizza boxes with nothing on them. "Homer orders three whole pizzas to his workstation, LOL" is a pretty great old-style Simpsons gag.

just look at how well this works:

I like seasons 1 and 2 :colbert:

Season 1, in retrospect, leans a little too heavily on being the anti-Cosby show and a lot of the episodes have a very dark, depressing overtone to them. It has it's moments, but overall it's clear that it was still finding it's footing. Season 2 is where it really starts to take shape.
