Some special thread requests apply:
(1) Don’t be dicks.
(2) GIFs, pictures, emoticon replies are fine. Jokes, quips and low-content posting (within reason) are fine.
(3) Please go easy on whiteknighting, cheerleading and dogpiling. No one came here for a fight. We came here to share videos. Not everyone will like the videos shared and not everyone will agrees with other people’s views. Different opinions are welcome.
(4) No politics. Found an internet reviewer who has lovely political opinions? Congratulations! We don’t care. We also don’t want your lovely political opinions either. There is a whole board dedicated to that, it’s called D&D.
(5) No imported internet drama, twitter storms, off-thread grudges and so on.
(6) Don’t take things personally. If you take things too seriously here you will be mercilessly mocked. Don’t report opinions you disagree with, only report rule-breaking or egregious dickery.
(7) Derails will happen. Keep them short. If there is a thread somewhere then take detailed discussions there. Alternatively, forget about it.
Usual PYF rules apply.

Happy posting! :)

Hey a good thread! I like it.

I want to signal boost PopArena's stuff. He's a goon here and I discovered him when searching for some stuff on the Doctor Who book series. He mostly reviews books and TV shows and is quite good at it! He deserves way more subs/views than he has now.

Nick Hodges' History Buffs video series is excellent for anyone interested in films about historical events and their (mis)representation in film and television.

I recommend his reviews of Waterloo and Apocalypto to see what he's best at.

Ground floor, might as well promote a bunch of video game critics I like

Jim Sterling is a large British man who talks about video games while dressed up like a comic super-villain. He does standard video game reviews (counted on metacritic, even!) and is known for giving games controversial scores and gaining the ire of fanbases. However, the main focus of his weekly video series The Jimquisition is on video games as a culture and a business. He is a self-professed consumer advocate and is always eager and willing to call game companies out on bad business practices, and has done some real hard-hitting journalism in the past, mixed together with some surreal humor for good measure.

Mark Brown's Game Maker's Toolkit is a series of relatively short video essays on game design. Each episode looks at a different game (or franchise) with an eye for mechanics and how they shape an experience. He's currently doing a mini-series called Boss Keys that looks at the dungeon design in each Zelda game, working his way through the series and making leading up to a video that will address the design of the franchise as a whole.

Matthewmatosis does longer videos that look at games from a subjective perspective, often focusing on small details. He also did some commentary videos for games where he plays the entire game in one long video (edited, thankfully) and gives his thoughts on each individual part of a game. He did this with Dark Souls, Demons Souls, and Devil May Cry so far. Has a very sparse update schedule. He has a beautiful Irish accent.

Errant Signal does extremely thoughtful and insightful videos about video games and their narratives. Very much recommended for people who want to look at video games as more of an art form.

Thanks for the tips. I'll get on to them tomorrow. :)

Yahtzee's Super Smash Bros he did a few years back will never not be funny, purely because of the sheet venom aimed at the guy from Nintendo fans. The original Escapist thread saw a ton of bans and the like because of loving death threats towards the guy.

I'm pretty amazed he's kept his mouth shut about interactions with fans over the years. He's a massive dork, but seems pretty savvy with keeping himself in line.

Which is really funny because Brawl is now pretty widely regarded as not too hot post Smash 4. Yahtzee has been vindicated.

Also want to give add another one: The Video Game Historian. He talks about... the history of video games. I'll point to his video on The Creation of the ESRB as a great example of his stuff.

I have a few individual reviews I'd just like the showcase here, starting with Errant Signal's Saints Row IV and Kitsch video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT03ezSnVL8

This video was my first exposure to his stuff and by far my favorite. I particularly enjoy his reviews in which he tackles anything bigger than just reviewing a game, such as this and his other old Short Wave Transmissions. This video also was really helpful in giving me words for why I love Saints Row IV so much more than what is technically a better game in GTA V.

Next is goon Hbomberguy's Fallout 3 video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLJ1gyIzg78

Primarily I, almost by default, love any chance taken to poo poo talk Bethesda RPGs and this one is one of my favorites. Hbomb is pretty much the only critic I currently follow that fills his reviews with humor, as sort of a hard reversal on younger-me's habit of watching a lot of Channel Awesome reviewers, but that works in tandem with the criticisms he makes, as opposed to replacing any real criticism like a lot of the people I watched on CA years ago. I can't give Hbomb an unqualified recommendation in this particular thread, however, since a number of his videos are about people and their political ideas, but his pop culture stuff is largely separate.

Last is Noah Caldwell-Gervais and his rear end in a top hat Simulators video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kivtv6wabBk

Another first exposure, this got posted in the other Internet Critic thread and Noah quickly became one of my favorite critics. This particular video gave me some insight into a genre that I had no interest in playing, while also giving a pretty neat anecdote to the appeal of such a genre. In general, NCG does a lot of fairly lengthy criticisms, often on a whole series of games. Whenever he comes up in the other thread, its a common criticism that he has a lot of vocal flubs that could have been better edited, which is fair, but it's fairly minor. He also freelances and will in the future be doing other videos about his travels, now that he, his wife, and his dog are living in an old bus. He's also probably the most generous person in the business, as he is very quick to apologize for letting down patrons due to delays and always grants refunds.

SF Debris should probably be in the OP too. For those who haven't heard of SF Debris, it's run by a guy named Chuck who does video reviews of, as his site name implies, science fiction and fantasy works (TV shows, movies, books, anime and animated material, video games, and comics). His primary area of focus is on the Star Trek franchise, and reviews of individual Trek episodes from across the 5 TV shows and 13 movies make up the overwhelming majority of his work thus far, but a quick glance at the sidebar of the site will show you the full breadth of what he's covered over all. He's notable for his open-mided reviewing style and for generally allowing a work to stand or fall on its own merits. He also goes above and beyond in delving into the creation of certain films or shows and how that creative process led to its success or failure, such as the 10 minute introduction to his review of Titan AE which chronicled the stop and start development hell that ultimately broke the film before work even began on it.

To elaborate a bit on Chuck and SF Debris: This guy has a rather insane work ethic that puts many other reviewers to shame. He has been uploading an average of two fifteen minute reviews a week for well over a decade, and has a backlog that is probably years long. Recently, he has had to suspend taking on anymore review requests due to stress until he can get the backlog under control. Also to note: he has been doing this while also raising two kids. The guy is a machine when it comes to producing content. He doesn't have much flair when it comes to style, but his reviews are chock full of detail, and like the guys above have said, he is open to just about anything.

I just wish he would get something more interesting to review than Full Moon on the anime front.

He has been intermittently posting videos on Gurren Lagann and Kino's Journey, and he did Gundam 0080 a while ago so he does have good stuff to review.

And to add on to that incredible backlog, when he reviewed 0080 he also said that other Gundam stuff was on his to do list, and literal years after the fact has still not done anything else even remotely Gundam related.

I'm a real fan of Welcome to the Basement. It's not your typical internet movie review thing where they pick a poo poo film and try and make it funny. The only gimmick to the show (aside from theme months) is that Matt Sloan (formerly Chad Vader) has not seen the film before so it's always seen with fresh eyes and often something he's wanted to see for years. They're not looking to poo poo on a movie, they're looking to enjoy it and that can be a joy to watch.

Also, they're really funny.

Thankfully no longer Chad Vader. He was funny as a Vader parody but absolutely terrible as actual Vader when they cast him in the Force Unleashed video games. Thankfully the one true no name brand Vader VA Scott Lawrence does him in the new battlefront game. Aaand it seems I was wrong. Sloan is still doing the voice and probably doing a poo poo job of it.

It's so good. Like, there's the obvious first layer of comedy, right? Where he spends 30 minutes making cup noodles and pours hot water all over his kitchen counter doing it, and makes comments like 'this is great because it's a very cheap food source for students' before turning to his obscenely expensive keurig coffee machine to get hot water from it to make them with, and laments the lack of actual shrimps in his fifty cent shrimp flavoured noodle, as if he got ripped off.

But then, in the background, you get some of the most beautiful and baffling moment in human history.

Phil keeps, seemingly at all times, a cutting board with a ceramic knife and an array of spoons on it on his kitchen counter, just there, in case he needs them. Whenever he wants to cut any meat he has to move all the spoons and poo poo off, cut the stuff, wash the cutting board, and then presumably dry it and put the spoons back on.

Next to it is an inordinate amount of pyrex measuring jugs. He has like five pyrex measuring jugs, piled up there on his counter, in case he needs five pyrex measuring jugs. I can honestly say that this frame of video footage is going to be a point of obsession for the rest of my life.

Some great stuff in the OP. Red Letter Media is great as long as you follow the basic rule of never taking anything they say seriously. They are sometimes incredibly insightful, funny and cool people. It still bums me out that Jessie stopped doing the videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfJpItxOOvU&t=1s

I am sure these guys are well known and they seem to have talked about everything you can talk about Silent Hill. But either way, I really dug this short series that they did a few years ago on kinda under appreciated movies. It's a short list, but enjoyable.

gggmanlives

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iB-m7taJyGs

I recently discovered this guy. He mostly reviews FPS games and it looks like he has played every one in existence. His reviews can feel a little like Oliver Harper's but without the polish. He can grate a little bit with his "I am a man with a dick, who plays games" attitude. But there is a hell of a lot worse out there. Great retrospective on older games and the videos are usually 5-8 minutes.

Noah Caldwell-Gervais

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SALZWWPMKIA

This guy might be love or hate. But no matter what way you slide, you have to admire his passion. He does huge 1-2 hour long retrospectives on video games franchises. He seems to have traveled through time from the 70's to make pretty sweet videos about games like Homeworld, Vampire, Warcraft, Fallout, Doom, etc. and has a fantastic analysis of both the Call Of Duty franchise and "rear end in a top hat simulators" (Postal/Hatred). I have dug into most of his videos and he has a relaxed, incredibly erudite way of speaking that is the love/hate factor. I personally like it. He can be a funny fucker when he wants and he does not seem up his own rear end. It could be that he leaves mistakes into his voice over or that he really seems so genuine with his love for games. Either way, check him out. Just don't be put off by the incredibly technically lovely sounding intro pieces to camera. He is currently on some kind of cross country roadtrip in a VW van with his girlfriend. I think he is wonderful. (For a guy who looks like Jeff Dahmer)
