people actually play the story in these games?

The entire pretense of the game’s setting is pretty racist.

Like if I was playing a civil war shooter on the side of the confederacy I could be playing the same game mechanically as call of duty but we agree that it’s pretty racist right?

You’re not this dense are you?

Hello dark souls thread.

I never actually finished a dark souls despite spending maybe 6-8 hours on each. I did spend about 260 hours on elden ring. Think I want to give the first one a try again.

I have Prepare to Die on steam, do I just go with that or get the remaster? Also same question for DS2, do I play original or go with Scholar?

Get the remaster, the people saying the graphics are worse are blowing it way out of proportion, while casually brushing off the entire existence of multiplayer as being a thing. Plus, you'd need an external program to run it properly (PTDE) vs it just working out of the box (Remaster).

I held off on getting it after a thousand+ hours in PTDE, myself, but seriously, it's fine.

You do realize that imperial Japan did a bunch of downright heinous things, right? Like, those were the guys that signed up with the literal Nazis as partners*. Yeah, the US doesn't exactly have clean hands either with the nukes, the firebombing, and the treatment of Japanese American citizens, but are you seriously suggesting people should feel bad because they're playing a character shooting soldiers of the country behind the Nanjing massacre?

I’m unsure which side you’re arguing for here. You can feel what you want but pretending a video game based on our actions in the Middle East contains no racism is ignorant.

This is not relevant to the discussion but as a point of clarity I would like to point out that during WWII, Japan saw what the Nazis were doing and said "what is this baby poo poo? I'll show you some real war crimes."

They were doing far more horrific things than the actual literal nazis were.

this is a strange take IMO

should games like Axis and Allies just not exist? Someone has to play the Axis. How about Hearts of Iron IV? Should you not be allowed to play the countries that join the Axis? Even though you can go alternate history with those countries and join the Allies?

How far does this go? How about SWAT 4? ACAB, after all. Should I not be able to play a Sith in SW:TOR? They're very fash coded.

You never play as the Germans in a WWII FPS, tho 🤔

edit: I mean except multiplayer

edit 2: also I haven't played a WWII FPS since Call of Duty 2; things may have changed since then

Probably the wrong thread but part of what makes the holocaust so horrifying was the industrial and logistical scale of it. But yeah Japan was really bad too. Its fair to say that they were both very bad.

We dont have to point to people picking the germans in a multiplayer ww2 game because there were people actually trying to criticize wolfenstein for painting nazis in a bad light

ngl you're getting weirdly defensive about this

I used to play Axis and Allies in college and none of us ever wanted to play the Axis, we'd usually take turns or do rock-paper-scissors or something. I don't think it's weird to not like playing as The Nazis or as Imperial Japan in a video game. I think for most people it's much easier to play as a fictional "evil" side, like the Sith or like Japan in Red Alert 3, because those factions/characters don't represent crimes against humanity that were committed in real life. The evil dwarves in Total Warhammer have slaves but they're also cartoon characters, so playing them feels different than playing as a Confederate general in a game that's simulating the American Civil War.

I never liked WW2 shooters, but I have to imagine that getting auto-assigned to the Nazis just means you're a conscript

DS2
Original Recipe
Pros: The experience the game was actually designed around, many of Scholars changes, even the “good” ones only make sense in the context of having already played it.
Cons: No more multiplayer servers.
Scholar of the First Sin
Pros: Some Changes for the better. Still has multiplayer.
Cons: Some changes for the worse.
Verdict: Learn how to mod and create the ultimate hybrid version that uses the better version of each individual change. The DLCs are identical to each version.
Alternate Verdict: Get an old Xbox 360 that was playing the game between July 2014 and February 2015 and thus has the four additional weapons that only exist on save files that were playing online on that specific system at that specific time.

Original DS2 still has its servers up on PC.
