I get the impression that multiple demons of the same type are only sort of individuals

That's been my observation as well. One of the most commonly done tropes of SMT is having your characters re-enact myths for various effects. One of my favorite bits of Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse is a sidequest where you're asked to deliver a Yamata-no-Orochi so you can cut it open with the Ame-no-Habakiri and pull the Ame-no-Murakumo out of its tail. This is a reference to the myth of Susano-o, a point explicitly brought up in the game itself, but what's interesting is that you're not asked to bring THE mythical Yamata-no-Orochi, just one of them because all demons are the same but different. Presumably under the circumstances you'd be able to cut open ANY Yamata-no-Orochi with the Ame-no-Habakiri and pull out the Ame-no-Murakumo because every Yamata-no-Orochi is also the mythical Yamata-no-Orochi that Susano-o slew.

That's also not getting into the times IV:A (and others) indulges in a weird kind of religious Syncretism with its myths. You get the Ame-no-Habakiri in the first place by pulling it out of a stone in the fairy forest because the Fairies of British mythology recognize this mythical Japanese sword as Excalibur. Similarly one Earth Goddess refers to another Earth Goddess who originated halfway across the world as being basically the same as herself referring to that other Earth Goddess as her sister, and saying they used to be one being because they both represent the archetypal role of an Earth Mother. The Ame-no-Murakumo quest does it as well, the game deliberately confuses the Ame-no-Habakiri you have with other mythological Totsuka-no-Tsurugi ("Sword the length of ten fists") from Japanese myth, so not only do you have the sword of Susano to re-enact the myth but that sword is also syncretically another sword used by Izanagi and a third sword that was broken by Amaterasu, all at the same time.

You see this fluid identity throughout the series. In some SMT games with special conversations a demon created by fusion will refer to the events of their myth in conversation with particular enemy demons. Demons who you defeat will occasionally agree to grant you their power, which is understood as letting you fuse them because the demon you just created is also the same as the demon you previously killed. Demons are not the same as humans, they can think and generally converse but they're beholden to their myths and their archetypes. There can be multiple demons of the same type but they all come across as basically the same individual even if there's more than one of them.

Yeah in Persona they are manifestations of archetypes, broad ideas and poo poo that spring up from the collective unconsciousness of all humanity. You can form a bond with Pixie and then destroy her in a fusion and then meet up with Pixie again because even though it's a different one they all stem up from the same deep roots and more specifically, all the Pixies you claim are the manifestations of your connections with aforesaid roots. They're individuals but they don't really do the personal identity thing the way we do.

(this was a terrible and unfun thing; do not actually do it)
Yeah, in Strange Journey (and maybe 4), you ended up getting stronger demons if you went through the grueling process of leveling up a low-level demon to 99 due to the stat-boosting apps you can equip; a Lv. 99 Pixie will have far better stats than the Metatron at Lv. 99. But the exp curve deliberately makes this prohibitively time-consuming and incredibly dull to do "legitimately", and thus it's something only crazy people actually do.

At least SMT IV (and probably Apocalypse) have the DLC that rains Light and Heavy Grimoires down on your head, so if you're truly obsessed with making a Lv. 99 Pixie with Megidolaon, you can do that.

Robindaybird posted:

Though Demons aren't actually killed from their dialogue, and how the High Pixie in Nocturne can be obtained even if you fused the Pixie (long as you remember which demon she got fused into) - the way the old geezer demons talk abut fusing with a pretty thing, and childish ones wanting to become something cool, it seems almost like Fusion in Dragon Ball Z or Steven Universe - where they merged into a new being.
The concept of two separate beings merging to become one entity is super weird, especially in MegaTen. In DBZ, the fusion is (usually) only temporary, and the result is a straight-up amalgamation of both fusion partners. Not only do demons seem fine with getting fused for the most part (some are even eager to do so), but the fact that a fused demon inherits the skills of the "parent" demons does suggest that at least some part of the "parents" survives. But the result also seems to be its own demon; the post-fusion dialogue seems to suggest that when you fuse Rangda and Barong to get Shiva, the resulting demon is actually Shiva, and not a Rangda/Barong hybrid wearing a Shiva suit, for example. My own personal interpretation of this is that the demons you're fusing die, and their Magnetite is used to create a new demon who inherits at least some of the memories of the old ones, as evidenced by inherited skills and the simple fact that it's not trying to murder you like most of the rest of its kind would.

It's a Final Fantasy 5 competition where you're assigned four of the jobs randomly and I think are limited to those four jobs and Freelancer or something like that in a playthrough of the game. I think there's also versions for FF3, FF Tactics, and the Bravely Default games.

I've had root canals and tooth extractions. I would rate Uranium better than them (though at least they're over relatively quickly) but worse than having a temporary crown removed and replaced with a permanent one.

FFIX's bosses, including said super boss, seemed to be designed to be beatable at level 1, multi-target attacks are either elemental (thus easily negated with the right equipment) or percentage based, and most characters have a skill which damage can be boosted independent of stats. I believe there are random encounters more difficult and luck-reliant to beat with a level 1 party than the secret boss.

As someone whos faced ozma in FF9 several times even with that knowledge and perfect execution i still wiped alot due to that bosses attacks. they are just too strong and hes fast even without that reaction speed.

seriously even with all the advantages the game gives you for his fight its STILL left to the RNG to give you a pattern (or exploit) that you can win with.

his favorite combinations of moves to use on me was Meteor(That always hits for 9999)>Curse(which always kills anyone left with autolife)>flare star (cause why not?)

and if pheonix triggered i got hit with curse.

Honestly hes such a pain.

Well.........yeah?.....kinda?...........those random encounters were mostly limited to winning without anyone gaining levels rather than out right beating them with someone as a exp sponge.. there were only 3 encounters in the entire game that you could not avoid the exp gain to any main party members and you can fight the secret boss before those three anyway.

Cameron's woken up from his coma right in time for him to congratulate Hero of Tandor Ninja Ranger Good Human Hokage Dick Solomon.

I mean the bad guy escaped and hasn't been conclusively captured and seemed to have a backup plan by their last mutterings but we've totally triumphed completely.

Cameron blabs some poo poo about Uranye's forms and how we beat it out of Powerful Form to Not Very Strong Form.

Theo's staying by his dad's side since, you know, he thought he was dead and then he almost immediately went into a coma and also he's an interpol agent named Stormbringer?

We have eight badges, after all, can't let this game end without going through the official Best Creature-Haver confirmation.

Downstairs, Bamb'o and Cypress are revealing another power of Hazma. It can make Nuclear Pokemon not so murderous.

Also that Hazma has tentacles, that thankfully only exist here, though the new devs want to add them to the sprite.

It'll suck if they do.

Hazma is perfect as is, why change it?

We can take rad guys here to finally get them over that whole rad thing.

Hooray! I succeeded at winning the mission!

Freemant is no longer rad, but he's still half-nuclear, with all the bonuses and penalties that come with that.

Fuzzybutt and Spoopyboot didn't get enough work during the power plant missions, and I am in love with this loving Syrentide jesus. I should've used Zapmander more, but apparently I just have to run a fairy instead of something that's way too drat good.

With eight badges and no plot left, we're finally free to proceed.

PU-Victory Road.ogg

This track is completely ridiculous, and I love it for that very reason. Uranium goes all out with its Victory Road, and that's something I like in my VIctory Roads. I'd not have a thing to complain about if there were a free heal somewhere in it, as it is really easy to run out of PP when there are so, so many trainers.

Well for starters it has things not available before now. This is another psudeo-legendary, and the least notable of the three.

Victory Road's trainers are split between type specialists and generalists. Elsa here has three ice-types.

Get it, Elsa, Ice.

Most Victory Road trainers have defined movesets that end up being exactly the same as the default level-up moves, which is baffling. One trainer has leftovers while the rest have no items, so weird.

Wild Garaewl show up in the grass, and Tracton in the caves. I don't get why these things are any level below 55.

Like we give a poo poo about weather moves. Only weather-setting abilities matter. Speaking of, Cassnail's hidden ability is Sand Stream, which helps it with being the only good tank in Uranium.

Weirder still to get Thunder Wave only now. What's down the ledge?

...Huh.

There's also places to surf. I really like this outdoor section, it's got a lot of secrets but if you just follow the trainers it leads to the next part pretty easily.

One last mega stone. Mega Whimsicott has Regenerator which pairs with Giga Drain to make it a real punk to take down.

Maybe it's just the appearance here that sells me on this screen.

Jerbolta's ability gives it +1 when it matters but it wastes it on a Hyper Fang.

gently caress my life, a OHKO move and it lands?

The statues are a bit chintzy but I'll let that slide.

The caves are only two screens but they're pretty twisty and have quite a few goodies and trainers.

Wait what did he say up there? Oh gently caress me.

Laissure is the final form of Sheebit, a weird-lookin' bunny if you ask me. But its Earthquake is legit.

Or it would be if Spoopyboot didn't levitate.

Finally, the Earthquake TM. So many Pokemon love having Earthquake and only now do most get it. Fuzzybutt uses it, for example, as Ice+Ground has ridiculous coverage. Only a few bug/somethings resist it, and with Dragon Claw it's perfect neutral hits.

Besides the dumb name, this guy has two new friends.

Devimp, the third of the psudeo-legends, and literal imp,

and Fallengel, its middle stage, and amoral killer.

Mercury is the halfway point, and he is a gigantic motherfucker with six Pokemon. If the free heal were near him, it'd be perfectly placed.

I've mentioned Quiver Dance in passing, but here it is. It boosts three stats at once, getting an offensive and defensive boost while also becoming faster. You know how Seikamater has five STABs, is tough as hell, and is somewhat slow? Let's make those first two worse while removing its one weakness! :getin:

Would these ninjas be the true strongest ones, since they had to defeat their rulers to get the zen badge?

This bridge is a nice change of scenery, though I question the cloud filter.

Oh it's Sr. Goldkorn again, back from route 4. Is that pokeball on a watch chain?

The last part of Victory Road is the lava chamber! Because what's better than a volcano?

Dragon tamers are just a light snack to Porkyus.

By the way, Porkyus is the one boss Mermaid in Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen. A lot of my nicknames are nerd jokes but this one is special.

Wild Devimp are in the lava chamber, if you want one of your own forty levels below what it should be.

...

Why the hell are there two nearly identical Daft Punk pokemon?

Elmer went to the HERO evolution, so here's the DARK one, Oblivicorn.

I'm out of Shadow The Hedgehog jokes.

Also also here is Antarki finally.

Hey, listen! Ghost/Fire with Prankster and a 125 base special attack is some sort of loving war crime! Z-target this one for the ban list!

Lava chamber has multi-layer strength puzzles involving dropping boulders down holes. God forbid we go five steps without a strength puzzle.

Flamethrower being this late in the game is the entire reason Superfly evolved from a Smore, by the way. I already had Thunderbolt and Surf by then.

There's an almost 1:1 overlap of special-focused Dragons who learn Dragon Pulse and those that get it by level anyway. Lavent is the only one who doesn't, and I don't know why you'd want anything other than Draco Meteor.

In general, why would you want anything other than Draco Meteor?

It was once a Chekov's gun for how I was going to cheese Kaito, but I bet you didn't know it was a Chekov's gun for getting a second copy of a TM twice!!

But that's in the past, we're at the championship site, where the strongest in Tandor fight it out to learn who is the strongest...

Victory Road in this game honestly isn't terrible, other than the usual Uranium problems, which is surprising, since Victory Road is traditionally awful for a lot of early games. I still don't know what the gently caress is going on with the Daft Punk pokemon though.
