I think the huge issue wasn't the arc itself, but the timing, there's already too many things at stake.


In a series that cared more about it's secondary characters, you think Tristan/Honda would figure out he's the fifth wheel, and viewed so low on the capability totem pole that people confused a monkey for him that he would actually... do something about that. As is, he's Jou without the plot importance or skill.

I mean the first arc's Flying Catapult gambit (or the maze gimmick) could be excused as the card game wasn't out by the time it aired, but yeah - Battle City had no excuses.
