:siren: This game is officially confirmed for a Personal Computer release with an ETA of August 7th :siren:

Horizon: Zero Dawn (or maybe without the colon; none of the sites seem to agree) is an open-world robot dinosaur hunting game made by the Killzone people. Against those odds it looks like it's actually reviewing really well. You play as a tribal huntress named Aloy who apparently travels across the land using her detective vision to scavenge every part of a laser T-rex to make sick rear end cyberbows just like our ancestors did. It sounds from the reviews exactly like what you've come to expect from recent AAA open-world games and that it doesn't necessarily do anything new, just that it does everything really well.

Reviews:
Giant Bomb - 5/5
Polygon 9.5/10
The Jimquisition 9.5/10
IGN 9.3/10
Gamespot 9/10
Gameinformer 8.75/10

Digital Foundry PS4 vs PS4PRO FPS Test

ESRB Rating : T for TEEN
Content Descriptors: Alcohol and Tobacco Reference, Blood, Mild Language, Mild Sexual Themes, Violence
Rating Summary: This is an action/role-playing game in which players assume the role of a hunter (Aloy) surviving through a post-apocalyptic world. Players guide Aloy as she learns to hunt robotic creatures and animals in the wild. Aloy uses arrows, spears, and explosive traps to injure and kill machines, boar, and occasional human enemies. Animals and humans emit small puffs of red blood when struck; one sequence depicts an abandoned camp with large blood stains on rocks and trees. The game contains a brief reference to sexual material (e.g., “Eighteen months hard labor in exchange for thirty years lounging around Elysium watching porn?”). During the course of the game, characters sometimes reference controlled substances: "I went to the beer fount too many times to count"; “I'm just a brewer"; "I know I'm a useless drunk"; "A tobacco cigarette?"; "Speaking of which, mind if I smoke?" The words “a*s,” “bastard,” and “b*tch” appear in dialogue.

Horizon launches February 28th in America, March 1st in Europe, and March 2nd in Japan

From everything I've seen in the streams, it is literally another soulless Ubisoft-style Open World game with piss poor repetitive gameplay and ham-fisted lame story. They've really made fighting robot animals look boring.

Super pumped for this. Just finished Far Cry: Primal and the literal lack of an ending left me hungry for a caveman hunting game with a decent story.

This game is also my consolation prize for "I just bought a PS4 a month ago and probably shouldn't drop another $350+ on the Switch right away"

Correct:

My biggest source of disappointment was that fighting the robots is actually a pretty minor part of the game. I'd say the ratio of Far Cry style stealth outpost clearing-to-robot fighting is a solid 3:1. You spend way more time fighting people than robot dinosaurs. The human enemy AI is really bad too, dumber than Far Cry 3/4. The streamer was consistently taking down enemies in plain sight of their friends without anything happening.

The robots are also unfortunately dumb, he'd get into fights with the tougher ones and their attacks were so off the mark 3/4 of the time that it got to the point where he would dodge directly into their attacks just to try making the fights interesting. There's a few dozen different robots, but since most of them are just reskinned variants, it's really more like 14-15 different types of robot. It goes without saying that Aloy gets overpowered really early on.

That's right, this is a game which manages to take the concept of fighting giant robot dinosaurs and make it tedious. Just consider this.

Speaking of Aloy, remember that footage they showed last E3 where she was narrating everything that happened? And how they said they had her do that just for the sake of the stage demo? Well, no, she's exactly that talkative for the whole game, which wouldn't be a problem if she just said each line once whenever a new situation came up, but no, it's the same canned lines again and again to match the scenario. Think Jack Marston from postgame RDR by a factor of 10.

The writing isn't remarkably bad, but it's not very good at all, either. The game's characters are all really flat and the voice acting is equally bland for the most part (which can be expected in this sort of game, unfortunately) The animations for the ingame cutscenes are also really stilted and awkward, practically The Old Republic-level. You know that 'Brom scene' that's been floating around? Well, most of the games cutscene's are about the same quality.

Story spoilers: The entirety of the game's background lore is dumped in one room where you can press various buttons to watch various holograms talk for about an hour, which is one of the worst ways to deliver a story I can imagine. Also the big 'twist' of the game is literally the same twist from Xenoblade Chronicles X beat-for-beat (all the actual humans died a long time ago and every 'human' in the game is just a robot) it's about as weak a twist now as it was then.

The game's graphics are easily the high point, but even that comes with issues. There's a lot of invisible walls in odd places, but some particular objects that should be solid, like certain boulders, trees, cacti etc. have no collision at all so you just kind of go right through some of the stuff you pass. The world in this game isn't entirely 'open' in a sense, either it's several different zones connected through tunnels/canyons to load them up, kind of like how World of Warcraft does it, which would be okay if the zones were at least fully visible, but that's not the case because the fog hiding the draw distance is really noticeable, especially this one desert area in the middle of the game. But hey, at least it goes away in screenshot mode!!

There's a lot of really odd design choices- a particularly glaring one was Aloy's bow and arrow, which leaves a thick white trail each time you fire it (and I mean thick- I thought she was using some kind of special rope arrow at first) I get that they probably did this to more easily indicate where your shots hit, but... was there really no less distracting way? There's a similar trail when you swing around your melee weapon, but it seemed to be totally off a lot of the time, appearing higher or lower than your swings, or vanishing halfway through, which is also bizarre and distracting.

I had some hope for the game- 'cavewoman taking down giant robot dinosaurs' seemed like a pretty refreshing concept at first glance, but at the end of the day, the Killzone developers made an open world Ubisoft game. If that's your thing, you'll have fun, but I'm just kind of tired of that. Shadow of Mordor is still this subgenre's peak I think. I'm also just kind of fed up with Western-developed first party Sony games as a whole- do they all have some kind of mandate to be as drab and 'cinematic' as possible or something? Feh...

Not to get into a fight about defending a game that isn't out yet but watching a steam and playing a game are two different things. A game can look like poo poo on a steam and still be a great game. The first couple posts being about how it is a bad game from people who have not played it is really dumb.

Also Riverdale is surprisingly good.

From the examples they used, it sounds like there is some really liberal writing in the game that'll piss off the "PC culture ruining everything" crowd. A low bar, like you said, but for an AAA game to even have it and not as a marketing bullet point (apparently it's pretty subtle) is a pretty big deal. At least the liberal LGBTQ industry folk I follow on twitter or get retweeted by people I follow are impressed with it, so that at least says something. Jeff Gerstmann was also really gushing about the story in the Giantbombcast this week, so it sounds like the writing is top-notch all around.

from what I've seen, the story and writing definitely were not the high points of the game, and being 'subtle' is really pushing it.

There's a reason why most of the high score review gloss over the gameplay, they cribbed pretty much all the turn-off-your-brain stuff and other mechanics and the game still manage to be more shallow.

Jeff Gerstmann posted:

Zero Dawn is structured quite a bit like the recent Far Cry games. You'll level up, gain new abilities by slapping points onto a skill tree, and hunt for crafting materials that let you hold more things in your inventory. You'll happen upon a handful of bandit camps, tag enemies, and try to prevent them from setting off an alarm if you're spotted. You'll climb a few things to reveal objectives on the map, but the game manages to craft a decent take on that concept that doesn't overstay its welcome. The stealth is satisfying, though some of the options you get to handle enemies can be a little game-breaking. For example, hiding in tall grass means you're effectively invisible, provided you haven't already been spotted. Early on, you can choose an ability that lets you whistle. It only ever alerts a single enemy, and that enemy comes right over to you, where you can take them out (unless they're one of the larger machines or armored humans) with a "silent strike." That doesn't alert the other enemies, usually, so you can do it again and again, clearing out entire areas with zero risk.

Open combat is more exciting, but it can also be slightly clunky. You always have a spear, which has a light and heavy attack. After some upgrades, a couple of heavy strikes will knock an enemy over, letting you jab them with a critical strike. The ranged combat is a bit more varied, though I never felt the need to use some of the fancier weapons, like a ropecaster that lets you strap enemies down, effectively knocking them over the same way your heavy melee strikes can. Or the tripcaster, which lets you set traps for enemies. The weapons work as advertised, but the different bows and arrow types always felt like the star of the show to me.

Fighting machines, especially bigger ones, gets easier if you pay attention to an enemy's weak points. You can knock off armor pieces and components as you fight, so disabling a stalker's stealth generator will make it unable to become cloaked. Knocking the gun off the top of a big cat machine means it can't shoot at you, and so on. There are lots of bits to chip off of larger enemies, and reducing their effectiveness is a great way to survive the larger fights. You'll have elemental arrows to exploit specific weaknesses, and a type of damage called "tear" is specifically designed to help you strip the machines clean before you start moving in for the kill. This leads to a few cheap moments where you can Skyrim-hop your way up the side of a mountain, where a machine can't follow, then patiently strip off every single piece from complete safety. But, by and large, it's an exciting system that makes every shot count and ratchets up tension in the bigger fights. Of course, if fighting isn't your thing you can reduce the number of encounters by learning how to override the machines, which tames them and makes them aggressive toward your enemies. Or you could always fire corruption arrows to confuse them into attacking each other... point being, the game has some nice options that'll let you play the encounters a few different ways.

Is this weird crusade against this game maybe being good people hating on Ubisoft by proxy or is the internet just eating its tail again?

If you consider simplistic combat consisting of shooting weak points on braindead enemies for the rare moment you actually have to aim and MMO quest designs to be 'good gameplay'.

The gameplay was designed so poorly, that even though you have 'limited' arrows for combat, you just instantly replenish all of them by crafting midcombat in menu. Stealth attacks so broken you can literally kill people right in front of others from the grass. mass effect dialogue wheel that hardly affects anything at all, randomized loot that discourages actual exploration, blatant level scaling, boring equip upgrade system of watching generic numbers go up, bloated as hell UIs and batman vision so you don't ever have to pay attention to anything at all, and empty open world that you could hardly interact with at all.

I guess it is Ubisoft backlash but that seems so weird to me. The hate on that open world style is misguided, that style is just a canvas that a good game or a bad game can be built around. Shadow of Mordor, AC: Syndicate, Watch Dogs 2, are all good games using that format.
