I'm pretty sure one of the devs said they leaned hard on the Bojack Horseman style animal-people jokes originally, but late in development they decided they were lame and cut nearly all of them out.

It goes with the character you spent more time with. There's 3 hangout choices in the game so you can't split them evenly.
