What is Night in the Woods?

Night in the Woods is an adventure game focused on exploration, story, and character. It was funded through Kickstarter and made by Infinite Fall, a three-person teamup of Alec Holowka, Scott Benson, and Bethany Hockenberry.

In it, we play as Mae Borowski, a 20-year-old college dropout who returns home to the crumbling former mining town of Possum Springs. Mae wants to resume her aimless former life and reconnect with the friends she left behind, but things aren't the same. Home seems different now and her friends have grown and changed. And there's something in the woods.

What kind of LP is this?

This is a blind LP with voice commentary, and those who joined me in this journey of self-discovery and nostalgic desire were my good friends Maple Leaf and Antinomy. Night in the Woods has several branching paths regarding dialogue options and diary entries. This is semi-completionist run showing these alternate paths. The LP originally started with the game's original launch version, but the Weird Autumn update added much more that I covered in bonus episodes.

Main Characters

Mae Borowski: The player character. A 20-year-old with a history of violence and risk-taking behavior, Mae has dropped out of college and moved back in with her parents in the dying mining town of Possum Springs. In therapy for her anger management and dissociative disorder issues, Mae drifts from day to day, doing what strikes her fancy and rarely thinking about the consequences of her actions. Despite her aloofness she recognizes she has issues and feels she is irredeemable living trash. Witnessed a kidnapping on Halloween and thinks she's being haunted by a ghost. Plays the bass.

Greggory Rulz: Mae's best friend. Gregg is impulsive and prone to petty criminal acts such as theft and vandalism, feels his going to jail is inevitable, and wonders if he is a good person despite it all. Despite being aware of Mae's turbulent personality, he often enables her behavior. Dates Angus but dislikes Angus's family, and is fearful of losing him. Works at the Snack Falcon and plays the guitar in the band.

Beatrice Santello: Mae's best friend when they were kids. Beatrice (or Bea) works at her family's hardware store but resents Mae for dropping out of college when she never got a chance to. Always tired from work and sad after her mother's passing, Bea covers up her pain with an apathetic and cynical outlook on life, and expects very little of Mae's capacity for maturity and good behavior despite once having been friends. Plays "drums" in the band.

Angus: Gregg's boyfriend. Awkward around people and preferring to cling to Gregg, Angus has a very scientifically-oriented mind and is skilled with computers. Abused as a child by his parents, Angus developed his skeptical worldview after suffering such violence. Works at the Video Outpost Too and does vocals for the band.

Jeremy Warton: Bike enthusiast and fresh out of high school. Jeremy Warton (or Germ Warfare, as he prefers to be called) hangs out with an assortment of people and seems to jump from topic to topic during conversation. His conversations with Mae tend to be one-sided and inconsequential. His brother passed away at some point, and he lives with the rest of his family near the woods, away from town. Takes care of Rabies, a wild possum that lives in a sewer.

Lori M.: A teenager who was in middle school when Mae put a kid in the hospital. Sometimes calls Mae "Killer", the nickname given to her for that event. A lover of horror movies and dedicated crafter of fake body parts and blood, Lori wants to make her own horror movie someday, but has thoughts of isolating herself after losing her mother. Lives near the railroad tracks.

Casey Hartley: One of Mae's former friends. Missing since June, Casey used to be a drummer for the band. Mae's friends thought he hopped a train and ran away from Possum Springs, but in reality, Casey was killed by the Possum Springs cult, sacrificed to the existential horror lurking in the depths.

Candy Borowski: Mae's mother. A gentle soul, religious woman, and voracious reader, Mrs. Borowski works as a church administrator, even if she gets distracted easily from doing her job. Loves to read books about crime and horror. Tends to trade jokes with her daughter, but the strain caused by Mae's past and college abandonment has created a rift between them.

Mr. Borowski: Mae's father. A former alcoholic who was once a danger to Mae and her mother, Mr. Borowski stopped drinking but was laid off from work. An older gentleman with a sharp sense of humor, even if he relies heavily on puns. Loves to read books about birds. Knew Angus's father in the 80s.

Molly Borowski: Mae's aunt. A cop on the beat in Possum Springs, she has a concern for Mae even though Mae hates her and all police. Doesn't believe that Mae witnessed a kidnapping after investigating the area the night after the incident.

Pastor Karen: A church pastor. Well-meaning and go-getting, Pastor Karen is willing to act as a therapist and helper to any who ask, but she has her own private doubts about the existence of God. Tried to help Bruce with his living situation despite facing opposition from the town council.

Bruce: A vagrant and drifter who used to do several manual labor jobs before hitting a patch of bad luck and ending up in Possum Springs. Lived near the church before leaving the town for his home and family.

Mr. Chazokov: One of Mae's former teachers. An astronomer and education enthusiast, he appreciates Mae's interest in stargazing and invites her to hunt for dusk stars on his telescope, telling her stories about each star as she identifies them.

Selmers: One of Mae's neighbors. Unemployed but part-time babysitter, Selmers was caught shoplifting painkillers and put in rehab for her drug abuse. Now an amateur but surprisingly eloquent and aware poet and multilevel marketer saleswoman of beauty products.

I know, this game is gorgeous to look at. I definitely will be playing the two other games midway through the story, as by next episode I can already see how Lost Constellation would fit.

...did you do something to the music?
No, it's played distorted like this. I assume that the game has a soundtrack that ISN'T meant to be distorted? Maybe the recording software, Sykpe sharing screens and Virtual Audio Cable are all jumbling up the audio for the game.

EDIT: To clarify, I think Fraps may have recorded it like this. I fired up the game just now as a test and sure enough, there is no weird distortion going on. I'll take it up with the Tech Support Fort and see what I can do for future recordings.

A couple of things I'd like to note before the next episode goes up (tomorrow night or so).

First, that the game audio this time seems to have recorded without any distortions in the music. So, that's good! EDIT: Spoke too soon, there are some distortions here and there. Sorry, folks. :(

Second, that Maple Leaf is not only a cool cat to comment with, but a man of great service and a distinguished guide at troubleshooting streaming-related content and programs. I don't know what I'd do without him to test things out to see how they work before recording.

Your desires. In my experience 'what I want to do' drives me far more than 'what I should do'. This may reflect poorly on me!
I wanted to drive more at the fact that, at least in my opinion, seeking a life of pleasure and hedonism doesn't necessarily give you as much fulfilment as a life with meaning, which usually relates to some sort of responsibility. Even responsibility for yourself is "adult", which could mean anything from staying healthy and active or simply bettering yourself by being the best person you can be.

Mae's life is like a floating lily in a river: it's got its own allure, but it's fragile and has no control over where it's going. Of course, it is way too early in both the game and Mae's life to declare her a lost case, even with her checkered past. I just don't want to watch her ruin her life further by trapping herself in a cage of apathy and developmental paralysis.

So this sucks to say, but the LP commentary will be post-recording now rather than live. Between the music distortion, low frame count and graphical quality, issues setting up screen sharing and audiovisual transfer to Maple Leaf, and now a desync between audio and video in the Fraps file, I've decided to make the LP's quality better by sacrificing the debate between dialogue choices and my own reactions at the time of recording.

So, for those who enjoyed hearing both myself and Maple debate Mae's problems as we see them at the same time, I apologize! At least, in Maple's own words, his reactions will still be "virginal".

I don't want to complain about your new recording style, but the audio is a bit desynched. You are reading a lot of dialog half a second before it appears on screen and it is a bit disorienting. It's quite noticeable around 7:00.
Yeah, I became aware of the desync the moment we finished the recording session and saw my audio (not Maple's) was shorter than the game audio's. My computer had a couple of slight freezes during the recording but I didn't want to force Maple to start the video all over again as we already had screwed it up once. I had to add silences where I could find them, but clearly I didn't find them all. Sorry. :(

If it's any consolation, the next video has no such issues... at least that are glaring.

To say something game related:

Mae should be a little more careful when it comes to alcohol. She just raises so many red flags.

-She said that this was pretty much the first beer.
-By the weird American standards she is technically underage.
-She dislikes the taste and feels like it's more of an obligation.
-She is a tiny, light cat.
-She's socially awkward and believes that the booze might be a magic cure for that.
-Her live is sort of a mess right now she might be depressed.
-There is genetic disposition for being a (violent?) alcoholic!

Any two or three of those points should be enough to make her run away from that stuff. The only way it could be even worse would be if she took painkillers to ignore an impending liver failure while she was pregnantly driving a car through the desert.
Ah, the BoJack Horseman approach. Clearly a model to emulate.

Here is another update! To be honest, I'm pumping these out because I really want to keep playing this game. I'm also not sure how long it is so I feel more frequent episodes will make the slow pace of the game go by faster!

:siren: As mentioned in the video, there is a vote for the next (few?) episode(s)! Mae's mom said that we only have so many days in our lives and water to feed the trees of friendship, and since I'm not sure if that means we're limited in our choice of events, the vote is a simple one. Between Bea and Gregg, who do we hang out with for today? You can also vote to ignore both and just go straight to the band jam session and watch me fail miserably.

My best teacher was a high-school science teacher named Darren Bonecutter. He used to threaten the kids who asked to watch videos instead of work by saying "Oh, don't say that, Timmy; imagine what the world would be like without zinc!" and he also gave us the single most reassuring thought about high school:

"People will tell you these are the best days of your lives. Take comfort in the fact that they are lying to you and/or have completely forgotten what being a teenager is like."

The writing in this game is phenomenal and I can't wait to see where this is going. :allears:
Your teacher was a good man to preempt the whole high school days lie while you were still there. If you're not going to be passionate about what you do, then at least act as a fountain of wisdom for all those poor, confused teens.

Funnily enough, I ran into some students I had taught when I was student teaching. They said they still remembered me and how I was a better teacher than their regular (though I think they were being kind of unfair). It's nice to know, even if you never hear from your students again, that you impacted them in a hopefully positive way.

Yeah, I agree with you regarding Mae's lying inclination. She's just... a talker, and when she talks, all sorts of truths and lies come out. She has little to no filter. I know some people like Mae but they're not half as disruptive or troubled as she is.
