Neon Noodle posted:The Cotman line isn't even all that good in terms of pigment load. Get yourself some artist-grade watercolor tubes and make your own pans. I have a few plastic travel palettes with artist grade paint squeezed into the compartments. At home I have an enameled butcher's tray and I just squeeze little blobs of paint around the edges. It's OK if they dry, you can re-wet them. You know, looking at the new ad pics I DID think they looked really watery. Is it possible they were loads better 20 years ago, because I had no trouble getting colours like this: I've still got the set somewhere, they really lasted for years and years. ...maybe they just felt so good because compared to those round cheapo bricks that would not melt and gave you the palest hint of a colour, spitting on the paper might've given more pigment. I will look at the tubes the next time I'm at the crafts store though, it's been too long since I did irl art. Thanks for the hint! Meanwhile though, tablets are the future and these take up no room in the closet:

I own a set of tri-color color pencils even though I never, ever, ever use color pencils. I've owned them for three years. So I did some sketches of various invented floof mans to continue my neat legacy of people ragging on me for what I do in my spare time.

Sharpest Crayon posted:aaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAArrrgh sooo cute It's about 6"x9". This is by far the most "technical" watercolor I've ever done in terms of extensive planning, using masking fluid, making sure all my washes were properly graded, etc. I recently picked up some Arches hot press paper and played around with it a little bit last night. Soooooo different. This is Arches cold press 140lb. The behavior of the paint on it is absolute perfection, but the details are limited by the grain. The hot press is like painting on smooth plate bristol board. It lets you get minuscule details, but it doesn't have the same magic as cold press. I've been watching videos by Ira Sluyterman van Langeweyde, I want to be her when I grow up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhHk3dQlIRo Sharpest Crayon posted:Pssst.. wanna hear a juicy rumour?

Working on another picture and trying to get my head around making skin look textured. Don't really understand how to do it without spoiling the level of shading, i.e. if I draw a tonne of pores on the skin it looks darker than I'd like. Any tips would be massively appreciated!
