jabby posted:Individually? Nothing. There's an official Labour website where they publish statements they have sent to the press, here: http://press.labour.org.uk/ This announcement isn't on it. McDonnell announced the policy in an interview with the Guardian in which he said "one way of re-establishing some element of openness and transparency would be, why not – over a million, you publish your tax return. Why not?”. And then that was it - no follow up by Labour, nothing to publicise what he's said, just one interview in one newspaper which there's no guarantee the rest of the media will even read. In a perfect world perhaps every political journalist would pick up on it but in practice that's not going to happen, regardless of whether Mr McDonnell is a Tory or Labour politician or on the left or right of the Labour Party. Here's what I think Labour could do: Decide what the message is. Eg the rich are not paying their fair share of taxes and the Tories are never going to do anything about it - because they're just in politics to represent the rich - but Labour will. Decide three key policies for achieving this, such as making people on very high incomes publish tax returns. Tell the Guardian the Shadow Chancellor is making a major speech but he'll give them a sneak preview in an exclusive interview. Do the interview. Press release the interview Do the speech Press release the speech Raise it an PMQs Press release what Corbyn said at PMQs Contact the broadcasters and say you want Labour's Shadow Cabinet members to go on their show and talk about this important policy announcement. Thornberry for Marr, Abbott for Newsnight, Cat Smith for Peston. McDonnell for Good Morning Britain (I think he could come across as fairly likeable to a general audience?) In future, make sure you include the message in other campaigns. Eg, on the NHS crisis, point out that the NHS needs funding but that means everyone paying their fair share of taxes, low paid and high paid, but only Labour has a plan to make sure the high paid do their fair share. Say it again and again and again. Now it's possible this would fail because the right wing media hate socialism, but Labour should at least try. E: Mirror have done it too - maybe it is getting some coverage http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/labour-reveals-radical-plan-force-9946856

northern ireland is having an actual election today and the thread poll is about who should be labour leader! cmon, no need to be so anglo centric Which way would you all vote today if in northern ireland? The big players are
Sinn Féin - republicans, said coalition partners who have a fresh new leader for new elections, historical association with paramilitaries (and apparently friends of corbyn) . anti brexit UUP - unionists, basically tories but more willing to work with others than the DUP, used to be in government until going into opposition last year, no party position on brexit but a lot of their candidates seem to be pro SDLP - nationalists, socially conservative but take the labour whip in westminster so infer from that what you will, anti brexit Alliance - undeclared, third way (in the northern irish sense) liberals, not as bad as the other main parties but a bit underwhelming, anti brexit the lesser players
PBP - republicans? anti austerity, pro brexit party, they currently have 2 seats Greens - undeclared, got their second mla last year, popular with young people the outsiders
Cannabis is safer than alcohol party - undeclared, no idea what their stance is on anything except weed Conservatives - unionists, always do terrible (they tend to get less votes than the various communist parties), pro brexit cross community labour alternative - undeclared, left wing anti brexit party, cant dress themselves pup - unionist, left wing, historical association with paramilitaries ukip - unionist (but not if its european!), pro brexit of course independents - lots of these so a great many to choose from but its STV so people may go hog wild voting down the list personally i intend to vote in this order: greens, cross community labour alternative, alliance, sdlp and then just wing it from there voting for everyone except the dup, conservatives, tuv

The Royal Commission can be established in the first year of the new Parliament report in 2017 and its findings legislated on within the term of the next Parliament. Global Medicinal Cannabis Summit We will convene a Global Medicinal Cannabis Summit in London in 2015. This Summit will welcome over 50 countries and over 500 politicians, scientists, physicians, NGOs and civil society representatives from across the world to share latest research and public policy developments relating to medical consensus that patients with AIDS, cancer, epilepsy and serious access to cannabis. It will be the biggest global meeting on the subject ever convened. Formal Government Review of Global Drug Reform Policy Innovations We will initiate an immediate review to report on the effectiveness of the cannabis legalisation policy innovation in Spain, Portugal, United States, Uruguay and their impact on consumption, addiction and treatment and criminal activity. Cost-benefit economic evaluation of potential legally regulated UK cannabis market We will campaign to conduct an updated review of the cost-benefits of introducing a legally regulated cannabis market. There is a clear need for a better understanding of the demand for cannabis, which will only be achievable with better data on consumption, price and potency

Likewise, the Tories and the CoE go even further back because, basically, establishment politics, and the Liberals and Non-conformists had similar relations; indeed, the Lib Dem constitution is still, in TYOOL 2017, very pro-nonconformist.

Today on the BBC and the Spectator: should disabled people be 'allowed' to be paid less than minimum wage? This woman in Brighton thinks so, because her daughter doesn't understand the concept of money anyway: https://twitter.com/Emmabarnett/status/837234398374346752 (That 'Improving Lives' government paper that wilfully misinterprets research to conclude that being unemployed is bad for your health because work literally just makes you healthy makes me really, really angry)

You know, that's exactly the same line of reasoning that some employers use to justify not hiring women too - we're a liability, because 'as soon as you hire one she'll only go and get pregnant and then you have to find maternity cover and when she comes back she'll be distracted thinking about her child all the time and she won't work as hard and that's why we don't hire women, it's not sexist really it's just the way of the world'.

TinTower posted:Don't do exactly this, as you run the risk of exhausting your ballot. Nah I know the mechanics of how the counting will play pretty well. Greens 1 is try to tip them over 1%, which probably won't happen, so when they got knocked out it will transfer to McCann who is in the running for the 5th seat against SF, Eastwood three is in case McCann gets knocked out to boost his numbers - in that case it will split 2 SF, 1 DUP, 2 SDLP DUP are a lock and the unionist vote is small here so they can only carry one seat even with transfers and frankly returning McCann is a more important battle imo

I'm not sure what's more insulting, that somehow the natural state of people with disabilities is slumped on a sofa, eating the wrong sort of food, watching daytime television, or that any route out of that has to involve financial incentive (presumably negative instead of positive).

SF have said they don't want a new agreement, just an implementation of outstanding terms from the last agreements and have made a lot of noises to indicate this will be done by direct negotiation with the Tories - one of the big outstanding issues is legacy investigations which has become snarled up in a roadblock over disagreements with the government over evidence considered security sensitive the government does not want to hand over. Of course putting James "I wrote a column complaining about the witchunt of our brave troops on the anniversary of bloody Sunday" Brokenshire in charge at a time of increasing Tory backbench pressure for a statute of limitations to protect ARE BOYS means its doubtful that's going to get agreed in two weeks
