nine-gear crow posted:Yes I know, but it wasn't even concern trolling it was a literal "What the gently caress is wrong with you people? You could have put Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, or one of the Castro brothers up there and instead you picked this old retired coot?" On one hand I agree. On the other, getting a guy who made a very popular state program out of Obamacare to refute this and be a face to white working class voters can be helpful. The whole election was framed as "Democrats hate all white men," and it's wrong. But it gets air time and needs refuted.

I think Trump deserves a lot of credit for Presidenting for a whole hour without using any racial slurs. He didn't even mock the disabled girl! It was pretty good, for him. Very Presidential.

The one great thing about Obamacare, even for all its flaws, is the "gotcha moment" to Republicans as in "good luck repealing and replacing this outside of a single payer model and enjoy the political fallout when millions aren't covered and pay more for less benefit". The Republicans are hosed on healthcare and they know it.

The sentiment was "why give it to this guy when there's people who connect better to the younger demographics?" (The answer is so those people don't have their careers tanked)

I'm gonna' say it again: All Trump ever had to do was not make a complete dick of himself, and a large chunk of people would talk about how "surprisingly presidential" he looked. He managed to make it through an entire election and a month of being the loving president without that ability, and now that he's managed not to soil his pantaloons onstage, here we are. "Surprisingly presidential."

Dr. VooDoo posted:It's easy to say this was a good speech when the bell curve is made up of mostly Twitter rants and insane ramblings Everyone expected something along the lines of the inaugural address, and this was far more normal than that was, so most people's expectations have been far exceeded. I think it's fine to give the administration some positive coverage on what was, by their standards, a positive night. The media has to be careful not to go overboard with negativity or risk damaging their credibility further in the eyes of the average joe who sees them criticize Trump no matter what, and then tunes out all criticism. Tonight is an easy and overall meaningless venture for the press to ease up and show that they can give credit where credit is due - even if it wasn't for this speech. Trump lived dangerously in this speech and opened himself up to far more hard hitting criticism to come. Don't hit the guy for promising unicorns, wait for him to inevitably deliver lame mules and then hit him.

If Jeb! had become President his joint speech wouldn't have looked terribly different from this one. Lots of people are breathing a sigh of relief because it feels like some semblence of normalcy is returning and the POTUS managed to not look like a lunatic.
