East/West Germany isn't exactly a fair comparison to make. East Germany at least had an industrial base and the entire population did not follow a cult of personality. Their population hadn't undergone physiological changes due to decades of malnutrition. The East Germans did not view the West Germans as their mortal, eternal enemies. And still, reunifying East and West has cost trillions of dollars.

North/South Korea will be much, much worse. Oh and not to mention the majority of defectors from the North come across the Chinese border, not the Korean border. So we'd either have;

1) A flood of humanity streaming across the Yalu, which the Chinese will love
2) A flood of humanity attempting to cross the most heavily mined and defended land on the planet.

Both are bad options.

Maybe we could use NK as a threat against China.

"Either you agree to 10% import tariffs, or 2 million screaming refuges are gonna smash across the Yalu, and you can kiss your GDP goodbye. Your choice."

God, I remember as a kid in the 90's that place always getting hyped up for no apparent reason and how it was this great mall that was also like a theme park. Also it had the only Lego store for years.

Though the adult in me realizes it sounds like a total shithole both then and now. Kid me also knew it couldn't compare to the West Edmonton Mall that I got to go every time we went to go visit my grandparents. :smug:

It was a lot nicer when it first opened, and Camp Snoopy was awesome. For a long time it was a 'shopping destination', where you could buy stuff no one else had. Vintage records, designer labels, Italian shoes and four major department stores under one roof? Break out the 90's-era credit cards that had high interest and annual fees with no rewards!

But Camp Snoopy got shut down after they lost the rights to Peanuts, Bloomingdale's pulled out the day after their lease was up, Sears is on life support and will (probably) be shutting down for good this year, and people realized they could buy the same stuff or better online for a lot less.

Today it functions as a major tourist trap, daytime homeless shelter and place to wait after your flight is delayed.

While the rest of his senior staff scrambled to squeeze votes for President Trump's flailing health care package, one person remained notably absent for most of the week: Jared Kushner.

Along with this wife, Ivanka Trump, another key cog in the president's inner circle, Kushner was on vacation until Thursday, skiing with family in the posh Colorado town of Aspen. Paparazzi caught Jared and Ivanka taking leisurely strolls, enjoying ice cream cones with their three kids and winding their way down the slopes.
Meanwhile, back in Washington, Trump was fuming. According to a source close to the president, "[Trump] is upset that his son-in-law and senior adviser was not around during this crucial week." Kushner did appear at the White House on Friday during the last gasps of the Obamacare repeal effort.

I'm beginning to think that Trump, et al mistook the Presidency with being a European king. No actual responsibilities, just show up to photo ops, get free vacations to Florida and Colorado and throw rallies to remind himself how great he is.
