I think the American soccer pyramid needs to sort itself out before pro/rel is even discussed. Right now, we have two second-division leagues creating a third-division league each. I mean....come on, guys.

Yeah, there was a Doctor Who bad guy in the 60's named the Celestial Toymaker who was a guy in yellowface. I know I originally thought Celestial in this instance meant space-related, what with it being Doctor Who and all. Thankfully, three of the four episodes he appeared in were wiped by the BBC.

Riccardo Silva, who is the guy doing the suing, is one of the guys who offered MLS $4 billion for media rights if they did pro/rel. Methinks there's a connection.

The fact that MLS has survived for 22 seasons shows that what they're doing is working - it just isn't working fast enough. That's by design, though. Pretty much every esoteric rule Don Garber has put into place was to prevent another NASL situation where owners were spending money they didn't have on players. Do I think MLS can be improved? Of course, I'm not delusional to think it's the best league in the world. However, you've got to consider where MLS is not only in the global perspective, but the American perspective as well. They've got two fronts to look at in terms of support: other soccer leagues around the world and the big four sports in North America. Does Bayern Munich have to worry about multiple Munich teams in other sports with more history and more people watching on TV? If they did, you'd better believe that the Bundesliga would have rules to get more out of less. And no, camo, don't go to DC vs. Toronto unless you're a Reds fan.

wicka posted:The Deadspin article makes a great point - for any of this to work, MLS needs to receive a windfall in the form of a giant TV rights package. That doesn't seem likely. Ratings on ESPN were the highest they've been in years, and the Fox (not FS1) broadcasts were big successes. Considering the league just made a deal with Adidas for $117 million/year (more than the current yearly TV rights), I can't see the national TV rights not increasing a large amount in some fashion unless there is a fundamental change in the way we watch TV. NBC's deal with the Premier League is $1 billion dollars over a six year period, so I would have to guess that MLS's next eight-year deal from 2023-2030 would be worth ~$300 million (pooled from multiple networks).

Watching the German Supercup, it dawned on me that MLS needs a thing like that. First game of the season should be the MLS Cup winners vs. the Supporters Shield winners. Bill it the MLS Mega Trophy or something.

The 2019 Champions League rescheduling has the 2017 & 2018 MLS Cup champions and U.S. Open Cup champions qualifying, so they're trying to close the gap of good teams going bad. Supporters Shield winners get left out in the cold for the next two seasons, though.

Rumor has it Sacramento is the favorite for MLS expansion by year's end. The other expansion favorite? Well, I hope you like the Miami drama that's been going on for years, because St. Louis will look to replicate it in America's unsexiest city.

Can't grow the game that way. Frankly, there's no easy solution. Saturday is the traditional MLS day, and there is 0 chance ESPN uses any of its linear channels on soccer on a November Saturday, and Fox Sports is only adding more college football. Sunday, you're going up against the number one sport in the nation on broadcast TV.
