Today in "WTF"s of Gaming History, a reminder that the 🅱 button on the Dreamcast was Blue. When I think B button, I think: Going back, Cancel, No; Stop. Things that are usually associated with red. So, file this one under "Where the Dream🅱ast went wrong" - it makes absolutely no sense for a B button to be blue.

I know Japan uses the circle button to confirm. I can live with that, even though it's red and the X is blue. Because a circle means confirm, and an X means cancel, and back, in my mind.

But did they really use B to confirm on Dreamcast? What about on Japanese xboxes?

I think it was usually A/B were accept and X/Y were cancel, so it's like one side vs the other. but yeah B for Accept is hosed Up

You should never go back in life. That brings depression, and a blue feeling. Red is the fiery color of inspiration and new awakening, thus to accept new things is a very red thing to do.

Triangle to go back was a bad idea all around. The way i see it, if you have to move your finger just to go back in a menu, theres a problem. When i was a kid i definitel ythought it was weird that a green triangle was the way that I cancel, but I made sense of it like this: the bottom botton is OK, so the button at the top (opposite of bottom) is cancel. There's a sort of logic to that aspect of it.

But bottom line: Green triangle to go back doesn't bother me nearly as much as a blue button named B that confirms.

Interesting thought, though -- if you turn the controller about 30 degrees clockwise in your hand, the triangle strongly resembles a "Back"-style arrow, that is, pointing backwards to denote going back.

this is the preferred asian way of holding a controller, similar to the ping-pong padle style employed by many asian nations. Makes sense when you consider how the japanese owned the market back then.
