okay so during the prequel Klendu mafia game, I ended up starting a peraMyst Abridged Series to try and recap what the hell we were talking about for the non-Myst players. I will start cross-posting all those posts in here so I can then continue to the dramatic conclusion!

Once upon a time there was an Age called Something Awful 5a Sa. It was a fairly stable Age, but its people had some pretty hosed up traditions involving lynches and town and scum. In fact, even in the professional expeditions of the Sa Mapping and Archaeology Foundation (SAMAF), its members would sometimes land on some Age they were supposed to be exploring together, only to suddenly devolve into fighting each other to the death just to see who could score the most points.

Maybe that’s why they only sent 2 people out on this one. One day, a talented scout named Zulea O’Hara was out exploring some age called Pento (you don’t need to remember this name) with her beloved Captain: Operative Kent Daniels. And they found a MYST BOOK! This was a big loving deal.

They brought the Myst book back to Sa, and then made the first expedition to Myst. When they got there they found a library FULL of books, maybe they could even be more linking books! But there were 2 bad dudes setting them on fire! Captain Daniels confronted these evil men, only to get his rear end shot with a crossbow. What would happen next?!

Captain Daniels got his rear end shot with a crossbow, and was captured by the two Myst men. He left a lot of blood around the statue garden for people to obsess over and investigate later, but for now, his fate is unknown.

Meanwhile, Zulea tried to escape, and was able to put out the fire in the library. But a ~mysterious voice~ called out through the Sa communicators:

”GET HER!"

Back on Sa: The Honorable Cornelius “Corn” Crowell heard this voice and presumed it was an order to evacuate Zulea immediately. This was actually a big no-no and against standard protocol but – nah, she’ll be right mate. He just had to make sure to blow up the Sa linking book behind him so the whole Age wouldn’t be invaded. No big deal. And the link-in point was guarded for weeks with no sign of intruders, so everything seemed cool. In fact, he thought there should be another expedition really soon!

Well, maybe it was his sister who originally had the idea. His sister was the Crown Princess, Tessa Ceschi, who wanted to be an adventurer. Or maybe she just wanted to go lie low somewhere cause all their other siblings had already been killed off by assassins. Either way.

Corn wrote a persuasive letter to the high council asking to establish a 2nd expedition to Myst. This one would be bigger, better, and less bamboozley! But at first, the request was denied. Until suddenly, it was ~mysteriously~ approved after all… and who all would be going?

Previously on peraMYST: a 2nd expedition to Myst was on the way. But who would be going? Somehow, it ended up being a highly unusual group that was approved for it. This time, 20 people would be going, which is a lot to remember, but they can be roughly broken down into the following groups:

TEAM SNEAKY FOLKS, which has some overlap with

TEAM HIRED MUSCLE:

And TEAM RELIGIOUS NUTTERS:

That left the intellectual group, TEAM SCIENCE:

And then TEAM ROYAL FAMILY:

Last but not least, the scout Zulea O’Hara would be returning to Myst again, after going on trial for the alleged murder of Captain Daniels. She ended up being pardoned, but a lot of people weren’t buying it. People like famous badass pit fighter Chell Hendersen, (the Second) and the bitter, homeless, and violent thief Verus Rettig. Zulea knew she was on thin ice and she better watch her back.

So what was her first idea after the group arrived at the docks? Go off alone somewhere to chat with one person, away from the main group! Surely nothing will go wrong, and no one will get assassinated.

Previously on peraMYST: a ragtag group of 20 people linked into Myst. After arriving on the docks, they began to spread out and explore.

Most of the crew went to the Library, expecting that to be the best place to go for linking book action. However, the doors were sealed so no one could do anything yet except think about their wincons. The foul traditions of Sa were already taking root in the adventurer’s minds, making everyone wonder how to get the best of each other. Some people had noble goals, others had evil ones… but everyone had a rival or enemy they wished to outlive.

However, Corn Crowell, (now pictured with the moon icon) the closest thing to a leader so far, insisted that everyone could surely still work together, under the rule of “No Murders, No Bamboozles”. The popular pitfighter Chell seconded this sentiment, and vowed to help enforce it. The inventor Dr. Annie Carter also wished the group could work together, but wondered how much she could trust Corn’s words… after all, she was there with pure motives of discovery, and he was her rival that she wished to outlive out of spite. Surely that meant he must be a badguy in on some big evil conspiracy that reached to the top?!

Meanwhile, at the Statue Garden, a much smaller group split off and found a puzzle related to the star signs. They got some loot while they chatted amongst themselves, but the mysterious hermit Kemet Hays wasn’t saying much.

At the Cabin, Zulea had a private chat with Kaywinnet Lee Miller, a famous engineer and major VIP, the prestigious and successful Director of the Sa Science Institute! Unlike her brother…

Zanzian Miller, a mercenary who had been hired to protect the expedition. But how much could he be trusted with such a troubled and violent criminal past? (fwiw Auspol would love him, he robbed the hell out of this one rich dude) He had also split off from the group, sneaking his way back to the docks alone for some unknown reason.

Although Zan was quickly spotted, a couple others were much better at hiding, and remained unseen. How long was the No Murders rule really going to last?

Previously on peraMYST: No Murders, No Bamboozles… yet. Spoilers: it wouldn’t last long.

Near the cabin, Kaywinnet and Zulea found a grave, which they dug up for loot. They found another Myst linking book, which would surely come in handy. But something was missing now from Kaywinnet’s inventory - her self-defense pistol!

It was stolen by Amaretto Groody, a shady wanted man who had somehow got into this expedition because…???
But he tried to play it off as being all chaotic good, and used the pistol to shoot open the lock on the cabin door. The rest of the island went into a panic, demanding answers after the gunshot rang out. But let’s table that for now! Kaywinnet found an amazing new weapon in the cabin: a D’Ni dagger made from some special alloy. And it was pinning up an ominous note…

Back at the library, the group determined that someone had to go turn on the power generator before anyone could get anything done around here. Chell volunteered to do this, attracting a small crowd of fanboys who all wanted to keep her beefy warrior rear end protected. (and also religious scam artist Sara Friedricks who was just trying to pickpocket people)

Meanwhile, on the docks, Zan tried to experiment with things, and started throwing rocks at all the mysterious technology that he really shouldn’t be throwing rocks at.

It set off some kind of electric trap that zapped Kaywinnet over at the cabin. She was wounded by this injury! Worst brother ever! But did he get hit by a trap as well? Zulea reported seeing Zan collapse on the docks.

A small team from the library was left to go investigate what happened. Annie would go with her sister Dr. Leanansidhe Carter, (just call her Lea for short) hoping to find cool technology there once the power was on. They were escorted by the archer/religious nutter Schelene Strangeland, a valued customer at the Carters’ store. All 3 were on high alert, ready to pounce on any potential attackers. Was there already a murder or bamboozle afoot?

MURDERS!?

Schelene and the Carters were joined by ex-pirate Petra Chow, but they were sure she hadn’t done it since she’d been with the statue garden crew the whole time. Instead the most suspicion fell on the people who were so sneaky they hadn’t been seen all day: Agent Anastasia Johnson and the enigmatic ”Podima”

But instead of giving an alibi, Pod claimed that there was no murder to begin with. Zan was still alive!

What? How? And how did Pod even know this? Where the hell was he? No one could see him at all up in his drat skybox. The dock team insisted that Zan had bled out a LOT and sure looked hella dead. But…

…turns out he was just really invested in faking it.

MURDERS: 0 BAMBOOZLES: 1

While all that was going on, Zulea had a look at the new Myst book they’d found. Could you use a linking book to Myst while you were ON Myst? Maybe it could teleport you! It was worth a try.

Nope, it was actually a trap prison book and Zulea’s stuck in the endless void now. That’ll teach you for graverobbing!

MURDERS: 0 BAMBOOZLES: 2

At least one productive thing happened though. Chell got the power turned on at the generator:

This opened several doors around the island, including the library, where they found a linking book! Who should go scout out this new and mysterious totally unknown age, where untold dangers could lie in wait?

How about the most high-value-target on this whole expedition: the Crown Princess? :v:

Previously, on peraMYST: The Crown Princess went alone into a new Age. She named this age: J’nanin Yoshi’s Island.

Shockingly, everything went okay as she quickly solved the puzzles, and found a linking book to get herself back to Myst. The others waiting in the library had busied themselves by writing their own novels …let’s table that forever.

Kaywinnet was also trying to solve some puzzles at the Observatory. She brought out her treasured Book of Stars, a highly valuable book that might not even be from the Age of Sa, and could maybe tell the future?! She couldn’t figure it all out just yet, but Kaywinnet could tell there was some great mystery here, that only she could solve! Also, when she got back to Sa she was going to be only a few days from retirement!

Back at the docks, a door was now open, revealing an amazing device called the Dimensional Imager. By punching in some code off a note, a message appeared from an old guy named “Atrus”, whoever that was. Without any more leads to go on, Lea brute-forced all 100 of the possible single-entry codes, and found many interesting videos to watch. But what did any of it mean?

While they were checking that out, Chell did some test with the power and the door slammed back down, trapping Schelene and the Carters inside. It would be a few hours before the power could reset again, but this gave them a chance for some much-needed private discussion.

Lea revealed something she couldn’t talk about openly before – an elite agent of the Queen, Anastasia Johnson, was also on this expedition and out to kill her! Annie was determined to protect her sister and kill this agent first by any means possible… but tried to restrain her bloodlust around their ally Schelene, what with her being fanatically devoted to religious pacifism and all.
(however, she could not restrain her regular lust :v:)

Finally, Nihilist Mercenary Extraordinaire Harsha Brandkamp was feeling glum. It seemed like everyone had some cool complicated backstory except for her, and she wanted to stand out more. So she dug up Grandma Ti’Ana’s skull out of the goddamn grave and stuck it on her sword.

No more murders or bamboozles this time – will the trend continue?

Previously, on peraMYST: No Murders, No Bamboozles, only some butt grabbing and a bit more graverobbing.

Once the power came back on, people were ready to move around again and Tim Yamashita wanted to “start some chaos.” Thus began The Battle of Two Arrows.

Timmy fired Arrow #1 from the observatory, aiming at Verus who was standing around the library just minding his own business. It missed, but Verus ran over to retaliate. They ended up in a dramatic duel to the death!

Both men had trained in the martial arts, but Tim couldn’t match up to Verus’ real-world experience fighting on the streets. But at least Tim fought to the end for what he believed in... starting drama and trolling Verus. With his last breaths, he threw wild accusations of Verus being a spy. Tim didn’t even get a burial as Verus literally threw his dead rear end off the island.

And during the battle, a surge of adrenaline suddenly struck everyone on the expedition, as if egging them on to go on the offensive. It was some kind of injection from their communicators! Who or what was behind this?!

The adrenaline still wasn’t enough though, for alleged pacifist and religious icon Sara Friedricks. She shot Arrow #2 but it harmlessly plinked off Corn Crowell, official tank of the expedition. Chell retaliated fiercely to make sure she shut that poo poo down. She stopped short of killing Sara, but things were not going well for Team Religious Nutters.

Meanwhile Kaywinnet tried to retreat from the battle, but left the observatory alone. This was not a good move, since she was still wounded, and she ran into someone who was much more effective in their attack…

Spoilers: With Sage D’ni Cultist Timmy and Genius Star Expert Kaywinnet both dead in the same day, any hope of opening some cool optional secret puzzle died along with them. Great work, everybody!

MURDERS: 2 BAMBOOZLES: 2

Over at the shore the Carters and Schelene were still off in their own little group, fetching Inventor Supplies. Annie and Lea were especially spooked by this murder of a fellow intellectual. They used the materials they gathered to invent a new contraption called the Slug Claw, which would attach to Schelene’s bow and allow her to grapple and scale things, like the bigass tree. They hoped this would help them set an ambush, but even better would be exposing Agent Anastasia as a murderer, so others would help bring her to justice. But just when Annie thought she could pin Kaywinnet’s death on their enemy… someone else confessed to the crime?!

Previously, on peraMYST: MURDERS

At this point in the narrative, we really should get around to focusing on the hero of the story.

Agent Anastasia Johnson knew the truth of this expedition – it was Australia a death sentence. The real reason behind the dodgy criminals who got recruited? She’d seen to it personally. And also that troublesome Leanansidhe Carter, who’d accidentally discovered her identity. She had to be erased along with the others. …including the last two heirs to the Crown?

Welp, just roll with it, Command never mentioned it being a problem when their request got approved. Sometimes even she couldn’t be privy to all the information on a mission of this much importance.

When Kaywinnet was assassinated, Anastasia knew the killer must still be hiding in the garden. And they must be skilled – could it be another agent? Command had given her a special passcode, but they couldn’t return the signal. And the chatter on the public channel was trying to frame her up for the crime instead. Anastasia forced the murderer into the open – Captain Petra Chow!

Petra’s only motive seemed to be personal vengeance. Once a proud (and hot as gently caress) Captain of her own ship, Petra had fallen on hard times and resorted to piracy and petty theft. Kaywinnet, a big shot in their port town, had severely hindered Petra’s employment opportunities. And also hired some thugs to rough her up once, for looking a little too interested in that valuable book. Kaywinnet's shady brother might’ve been stalking Petra around too, but he can hardly be expected to remember some everyday details like that, hey?

But Petra had no idea what the Book of Stars or the Sign of the Maker really meant. This book could even end the world, and here she was idly ripping out pages to draw fake treasure maps as a prank.

Anastasia knew. She would make sure this threat was contained. She would save the day.

Surprisingly, Petra didn't have any hard feelings about being outed and confessed to the murder. Even the Carters, who’d befriended her at the docks, had to own up that Petra was the one responsible. But while Petra willingly claimed her kill, she had no intention of going quietly.

As most of the expedition made plans to subdue her, Petra turned off the power, closing the doors again and trapping most of the group inside the library.

It was a clever move… but it wasn’t enough.

There was still a group left outside: the Carter sisters, the highly skilled archer Schelene, and the mercenary Zanzian Miller, who was out to avenge his sister. And they were all still hopped up on adrenaline. The others were blocked from trying to apprehend Petra, but they were also blocked from interfering with the Carters.

The 4 converged on the garden, coordinating their attacks, and Sa’s greatest mind in espionage fell along with this common murderer. gently caress.

When the battle ended, Petra and Anastasia weren’t dead, just unconscious. Schelene’s pacifist ways had convinced the others to hold back… for now. But while they divvied the loot, the power came back on and another person suddenly emerged from the generator – Verus Rettig.

Verus claimed he’d snuck over just to try and help out! Annie was not buying it. She ordered him to finish the job for them, and if he didn’t follow through, well… he just saw how well coordinated they were in attacking, capisce? Just for good measure she had him turn the power back off too, to make sure no more “help” showed up. Myst Island was on lockdown.

But most of the library crew had already moved on by then. Why sit around doing nothing when they could explore? They had another linking book to this new age called Channelwood. It looked like a nice happy peaceful place for tree-huggers.

They linked right into the middle of an all-out civil war, between an “Achenan” faction (blue) and a “Sirran” faction (red). Neither group seemed happy to see a bunch of intruders link in. Chell was quickly elected as their Commander to try and get them through this alive.

Corn was still the tank, using his huge shield to defend against sniper fire.

Mercenary Hattington Kim, also known as Chell’s biggest fan, easily ran into the thick of the battle under her direction.

Even Princess Tessa got in on the action, following Chell’s command to help take down some Achenans in their way.

Harsha stuck to ranged attacking with her bow for now – probably best to save the cool skull sword for the dramatic climax – but Robin Duerod was threatening to show her up. No one seems to know what the deal with her backstory was, but one thing was certain, she was one HELL of an archer.

The new Team Discovery Channel bonded together and worked as a unit to survive, claiming the Curator’s Hut and Windmill without a single casualty. The peaceful hermit Kemet Hays hadn’t been participating in the fighting, but even he got a chance to prove his bravery. He agreed to the dangerous mission of defusing a double-decker KTANE bomb pretending to be defusing a double-decker KTANE bomb repairing the fire suppression system inside the burning windmill.

Chell and Harsha would be helping direct him, and Annie answered the call to help remotely over the public channel. As the water poured down, TDC celebrated another success.

But wait, where did Hattington and Harsha get to…?

While Team Discovery Channel worked together in Channelwood, things on Myst were still tense.

The mysterious “Podima” decided to chat with the group, and reveal some of his secrets. Turns out the trick to his super stealth was, he literally wasn’t there. He was talking to them on the communicators, through some complicated advanced device he’d found.

He was worried about someone finding him though. He said he woke up in some cave and was wounded, and also had amnesia. Everyone figured he must really be Captain Daniels, left to rot somewhere by Sirrus and Achenar after they got done torturing him for info.

Suddenly, Anastasia’s communicator started talking, asking for her to report in! (since when could they even send private messages?!) Once everyone stopped freaking out, they tried talking back to her mysterious “Command” but the only info they got was there must be some other agents on the expedition. Around this time, Verus started wondering… how come she had a Command, and they didn’t?!

Everyone agreed then (some more reluctantly than others) it was probably best to kill off Anastasia if she was some evil spy. And also the murderous Petra just to be safe. just like Annie had already ordered Verus to do anyway :v: Schelene the pacifist eventually rejoined the group, too late to stop them. She was not happy! But the ensuing moral debate was interrupted by the sounds of absolutely horrific screaming.

Maybe they should have this conversation later… after turning the power back on and investigating the library. There was no sign yet of the sneaky Amaretto Groody, even though he was last seen being shut inside. As for Sara Friedricks, she was… in the fireplace.

Previously on peraMYST: more things on fire

The less said about the fireplace, the better. It was not pretty.

tl;dr: Sara Friedricks was almost definitely dead, cause that stuff was almost definitely her. She’d apparently left a suicide note, and Schelene verified that it looked like her handwriting.

MURDERS: 4-5? BAMBOOZLES: 2-3?

Since Channelwood was still a warzone and there was nowhere new to explore yet, the Myst team settled in to solve some puzzles instead. Annie and Schelene opened a secret vault in the observatory with a combination of research + brute force.

Inside was a single white page torn from some linking book, which was useless for now cause this was sequence breaking a bit... and it was only gonna lead to a death trap anyway. But there was also a disturbing rambling note from Achenar in the vault.

The mysterious “Podima” reported that even though his memory was still gone, these notes from Sirrus and Achenar were giving him strong emotional reactions! His fakeclaim presumed identity got updated from “must be Captain Daniels” to “might be that Atrus guy”

But while the observatory looked solved, the dimensional imager puzzle was still out of reach. The 3 significant dates they’d found did something at the imager, but they didn’t all work in a sequence like the observatory did. Weird.

As everyone took a much-needed break from the puzzling, they finally spotted Amaretto Groody, trying to keep himself hidden! Lea demonstrated the special ability she had from being born in the Lovers sign: Vulcan Death Grip knowledge of a special pressure point that would paralyze him. Conveniently, Schelene had also finally found where the prison book was, by stumbling into it. Annie swapped Groody into the prison instead. Maybe they could have a chat with him later to question him. He would spend the rest of the expedition in the endless void, with the prison book locked inside the vault.

That also meant Zulea was now free of the prison. Zulea was less dodgy than Groody, but that wasn’t saying an awful lot. The others tried to get a straight story from her on what really happened during the first expedition, but it was hard to tell if she was being truthful. And then… someone else popped in!

Previously on peraMYST: what the hell is Myst Team up to?!

Back in Channelwood, people wondered what to make of all this ominous news coming in from Myst. What the hell was going ON over there? Why couldn’t they all work together in harmony like Team Discovery Channel?

Kemet the hermit even had a mystical vision shortly after his near-death experience at the windmill, of making peace with his rival Schelene. He heard a voice calling them the true Brother and Sister of The Way. They no longer needed to be opposed to each other!

But just when it looked like everything was going great, a fight broke out between the two mercenaries: Hattington and Harsha.

Hattington took advantage of the chaos to try firing at Harsha, who dodged and fired back. The fight was on, and they slipped away from the others to have a proper battle.

Their cinematic duel wove in and out of the larger battle around them, at times interrupted by outside attackers. While they pressed on, the others stared down a ton of Sirrans AND Achenans all wielding crossbows in their direction. Corn made a daring rescue to shield his sister, the Princess…

…while Robin took THE SHOT, severing a rope and making a whole staircase about to collapse.

The mercenaries continued their duel, slaying Sirrans and Achenans along the way. But Harsha wondered why it had to come to this. Was this fight really necessary? Hattington finally revealed that they’d been hired for opposing purposes. Harsha’s job was to protect as many of the expedition members as possible, but Hattington’s aim was to get them killed instead. And he was getting tired of egging Chell on to maybe do it for him indirectly. It was time to start getting down to business.

They seemingly paused their duel to deal with the big group of Sirrans, but Hattington was momentarily distracted. He spotted a way out of this hell – a linking book back to Myst!

But Harsha took this opportunity to stab him to death and booted him onto the collapsing staircase.

Hattington did get first dibs on linking back, though.

Everyone on Myst heard someone linking back, and they were pretty surprised find it was a dead Hattington. Things got tense on the public channel as people tried to suss out who was doing what, and who was trustworthy. And who was in charge of this expedition back on Sa? Why didn’t even Corn know? Who DID know?!

(...to be fair, she didn't really know either)

ANYWAY, the war in Channelwood continued, finally approaching a conclusion.

Harsha just happened to be wearing some (second-hand) blue Achenan armor while she killed Hattington, who wore red Sirran armor. And there was also that staircase full of Sirrans that Robin and Harsha took out. So the Achenans now believed Harsha was on their side. This changed the nature of the battle considerably as Commander Chell, also wearing blue, focused on eliminating the Sirrans only.

But Sirrus and Achenar themselves (aka: Atrus’ two jackass sons), were also there. When the duel finished and the staircase collapsed, Achenar could be heard calling out to Sirrus that they needed to end this. Their voices came from the Writer’s Santuary, but just as Team Discovery Channel approached… Sirrus and Achenar murdered the two leaders of the Channelwood tree-dwellers.

Corn the protectman came face-to-face with Sirrus, who ripped off Robin’s moves to slash at some important support ropes. Corn jumped after him, but Sirrus and Achenar both linked out to safety, leaving the Writer’s Sanctuary collapsing behind them. Was Corn going to make it?!

The rest of the Sirrans had already been killed off, so the war would have been over. But the surviving Achenans were devastated by the loss of their leader and the ruin of the sacred Sanctuary, and killed themselves in grief. :smith:

At least Corn wasn’t dead though! He just got a little roughed up when the Santuary collapsed with him still in it. Team Discovery Channel now had full control of Channelwood, and TWO linking books. One going back to Myst, and one to a completely new Age: Mechanical.

What crazy hosed-up poo poo were they going to walk into next?

Previously on peraMYST: The War for Channelwood ends

With the war over and all the native tree-dwellers of Channelwood seemingly dead, Team Discovery Channel were sitting on a nice big pile of equipment. They decided to destroy all the weapons they’d found, to discourage any more conflicts between the expedition members.

They would then bring all the armor and materials they could carry back to Myst, and leave the new linking book at home base in the library. Then TDC and Myst Team could merge, and everyone on the expedition could finally meet up again to explore the new Mechanical Age together. There was a bit of tension between the two teams after being split up for so long, but with everyone keeping an eye on each other, everything should be okay, right?

In Mechanical, everyone linked in to a small island. To the west, they could see Sirrus boarding a ship with some pirate henchmen. A fortress loomed directly ahead, but the connecting bridge had been pulled up. So the group was stranded, and powerless to stop Sirrus from escaping.

It was raining, and people were getting worried about the rising water. On top of that, the sensitive people born under the Atronach sign had this annoying ringing in their ears that gave them a pounding headache. On top of THAT, all the chatter of the full group being in one place again was giving everyone a headache.

Schelene tested out her Slug Claw contraption and found she could pull herself and one other person across to the next island. She took Kemet the hermit first, seeing as they were now mystical soulmates or something. Then she shot it back to bring the Carter sisters across. After that, she needed a rest thanks to her horrible Atronach headache.

In the fortress, Lea found some mysterious panel in a wall, but it wouldn’t open just yet.

Annie found a puzzle to bring the connecting bridge back down for everybody. Between that and their Slug Claw invention saving the day, she was starting to feel pretty drat smug.

And over there on that west island, it looked like there was some kind of metal they could harvest for more inventing! Just what she’d been looking for all along!!

Everything was going wonderfully!!!

Stay tuned for more happy fun Second Expedition Teamwork Adventures!!!! :buddy:

Now that the bridge was back down, the crew could get to properly exploring. Schelene stayed in Sirrus’ room cause it had a nifty throne where she could relax in style, and she could shoot the Slug Claw over if anyone got stuck out on an island again. Some of the group moved on to check out Achenar’s room of the fortress.

Another puzzle in Achenar's room unlocked the controls for the other two bridges. When all four bridges were brought in, the secret panels went up and behind them was a complex logic puzzle about five nuclear reactors. What an odd theme for a puzzle. Chell got right to work on it.

Even the mysterious “Podima” was apparently doing a puzzle for once. He said he was trying to boost the signal on his communication doohickey, and uploaded an image of his efforts.

Thanks to his amnesia, he was the only one left now who hadn’t shared his full name with the group. (oh, also the other guy who’s still stuck in a book. Wasn’t someone gonna try and talk to him?) A vague sense of camaraderie was slowly growing in the expedition after all.

The Carter sisters were busy setting up some crazy advanced teleporter thingo on their communicators, to harvest metal from the west island. It looked like there were different metals too, on the other islands. Maybe they could work out how to make a new alloy!

But their buddy Zan didn’t feel like sticking around for all the science and puzzles. Being in the big crowd was bugging him, so he linked back to Myst to just chill out by himself again.

After racking her brain all day on the nuclear puzzle, Chell seemed to have genuinely hit a wall. There just weren’t quite enough clues to fill it in completely. Unless someone on Team Science just happened to know a bit about these elements involved, to provide a new clue? Annie rattled off some random facts about coolants and moderators, and this was enough for Chell to solve the last bit. Was this actually based off real nuclear science?

The panels in Sirrus and Achenar’s rooms raised and locked in place, revealing a new secret room in the centre. Inside was a disturbing cage, with two dead bodies inside.

Something deep underwater beneath the fortress rumbled and activated, and all four bridges extended back down. The fortress had entered combat mode.

This wasn’t ominous at all.

Previously on peraMYST… This is fine

After all the new teamwork and camaraderie had lightened the mood of the expedition, finding the secret centre room of the fortress was a sobering discovery. It looked like Sirrus and Achenar had tortured the two men in the cage, then recently killed them. Together, the men had scrawled a number on the wall: “9455”.

At first, almost everyone agreed the younger man must be the lost Captain Daniels. Hadn’t he been captured and tortured by Sirrus and Achenar? And there was his Sa communicator, it had to be him!
But Zulea insisted that neither of the men were her beloved Captain. She would know. But that was his communicator, and it wasn’t a good sign that it had been removed from his body. That’s supposed to be pretty drat hard to do safely.

What was it doing here then? Well, someone had rigged it to hook it up to the nuclear reactors apparently.

…huh.

That didn’t sound good.

Still though, even if that wasn’t Captain Daniels, it reminded everyone that their expedition didn’t actually have anyone in command here. Several people put up their hands, but some were more serious than others. (and the mysterious “Podima” was disqualified for not being able to even put his real name on the ballot)

Chell became the new unofficial Captain by group consensus. She’d shown true leadership back in Channelwood after all, getting everyone through alive except for that one guy who started a duel. She’d finally made a real heroic name for herself to live up to the reputation of her mother before her.

But Corn couldn’t help but feel a bit jealous. Wasn’t the leader supposed to be him? The noble knight and Protectman? The guy who personally evacuated the only known survivor of the First Expedition? And requested the Second Expedition happen in the first place? He couldn’t deny though that Chell had earned the title.

Anyway, back to the creepy cage room. It was hard to be too excited about it at this point, but there was also a nice stash of loot in there. A new red page and blue page that belonged to some incomplete books in the library, and linking books to two new Ages: Stoneship and Selenitic. The group was still carrying a spare Myst book, too. But what should they do now? Would they split up again?

Couldn’t they just turn this poo poo nuclear reactor poo poo back OFF and bring the secret doors back down so they could plan in peace without it being all spooky? Maybe if they had a proper full-on engineer in the team…

As the group pondered over their plans, Annie Carter grew increasingly agitated. They still had important metal harvesting to do here! So far this expedition had been full of spies and sneaks and frauds, while she and her sister, honest inventors out to gain knowledge, kept getting left behind on all the exploration and puzzles. And now everyone was bound to go running off into the new Ages, splitting up again, leaving the sisters behind and alone and vulnerable in this creepyass combat-mode fortress. Didn’t anyone care about the betterment of Sa? About their Foundation and their Royal Guard gaining the greatest armor imaginable?!

Right at that moment, as the argument got heated and Lea tried to reassure Annie that cool heads would prevail…

Previously on peraMYST: Ready to Fire

There was no more time to discuss. There was no way to plan. Everyone’s communicators were injecting them with adrenaline again, except this time it was a MAJOR dose, sending everyone into a crazed blood rage.

Daniels’ communicator, still rigged up to the reactors, had gone off too as some kind of detonator for the fortress’ weapon. Could nuclear reactors get angry?! In any case, the fortress was going completely haywire. People were safe for now within the area around the fortress itself, but the nuclear-powered weapon was shooting outwards non-stop.
According to the Mechanical journal, Atrus allegedly set up this weapon to just shoot down some average pirate ships? Which was pretty ridiculous to begin with, but it definitely wasn’t meant to be used like this. The Age itself was getting ripped apart.

Verus was in pure survival mode. He linked into Stoneship without hesitation. Zulea O’Hara had been intending to scout ahead all along anyway, and linked into Stoneship right after Verus. Daniels still had to be alive out there somewhere, and she wanted to find the next lead ASAP.
Harsha the no-nonsense mercenary also linked out right away, going to Selenitic instead.

With the adrenaline raging in her veins, and the Age itself collapsing around them, Robin Duerod was struck with existential terror. They might not make it out of this alive… and no one still had any idea what her backstory was!
Robin frantically whispered some foreshadowing to the Princess. Tessa wondered what the hell she was on about.

Maybe because she was more used to working under the influence of adrenaline, Chell stuck to a methodical plan to make sure the expedition didn’t get completely derailed. She wanted to make sure no page or book was left behind. (except the one spare book linking back to Myst, which was unavoidable) She grabbed the Blue page and Selenitic book when it looked like no one else was taking them, and saw that Corn took the Red page while Kemet got the Stoneship book. So at least the whole second half of the story wasn’t going to be totally scrapped.

With the loot sorted, people began linking back to Myst. In all the chaos, Corn got separated from his sister. The last thing he saw before linking out was Robin trying to talk to Princess Tessa about something… but he continued on from Myst to Stoneship. That left Tessa and Robin, doing… whatever plot point they were doing, and the Carter sisters.

Annie had already been angry before the adrenaline hit and now she was ready to kill the whole freaking universe, just for dangling these inventor goodies in front of her face and snatching them away. She didn’t look twice at the books or the pages and wasn’t even going to go for the metals, she just wanted to stick with Lea to make sure they didn’t get split up. But Lea wasn’t leaving. Fuelled by adrenaline, she dashed to the last two islands to continue the metal harvest.

Annie followed Lea to help out, and nearly got blown right off the island in the process. But while all the others moved on, Robin and Princess Tessa both came to their aid. The sisters got back on their feet and made a mad dash for the Myst book, expecting Robin and Tessa to be following right behind.

But there was a problem.
