The other late-night hosts are suffering from the exact same thing. Really tells you something about what the format needs to succeed, and why.

I think Conan is legit the naturally funniest comedian out there and I love all of his remotes, but I don't watch his show because late night just sucks. I don't care about celebrities

I've found that Colbert has been pretty good, at least with his monologues. Seth Meyers has also been really enjoyable, and has definitely changed up his patter to account for the lack of audience response

RFC2324 posted:I forgot why he's off the air, was it just time for his show to end? Letterman retired, and his company was producing Ferguson's show. So Craig was pretty much forced off to be replaced by loving James Corden. A goddamn travesty, really.

RFC2324 posted:I forgot why he's off the air, was it just time for his show to end? I don't know if it's 100% the reason he quit or not, but he was (contractually) supposed to replace Letterman but CBS went with Colbert instead. So he took his $5 million in penalty money and walked away when his contact ended

Zzulu posted:If something needs laugh tracks to be funny it's automatically bad I'm going to defend this slightly and say that decades of experience and what is effectively muscle memory are likely driving the laugh break pauses. Colbert has been pausing for laughter after his jokes basically all his life. Hard to stop now.

Frasier is good actually e: I think it might be the one exception. IT Crowd is ruined in hindsight by the Glinner association.

I remember Wings being pretty good, and thankfully it is obscure enough that I have never seen a single reference to it on the internet and I will never have to be disabused of this notion.

RFC2324 posted:I forgot why he's off the air, was it just time for his show to end? He detested the format and went in to resign, but it was just after Letterman had internally announced his timetable for retirement. The network didn't want both shows to change hosts at the same time, so they gave Craig's show the new studio in return for him staying on past Letterman's retirement. This was his "I don't give a gently caress and they can't fire me" period, and it was some of the best TV in history.

Laugh tracks? gently caress off, I don't believe in made-up nonsense. -looking at Office Jim turning to the camera and making a face so the audience knows to laugh- Wow, that is SO true!

Its very good.
