Did you read the short story collections because they contain some of her attempts to break into the space erotica market.

Apart from some big age gaps and the whole sharing your mind with your horny dragon stuff the Pern books are pretty tame by standards of the genre.

If you haven't read the Revenge of the Sith novelization, do it. Matthew Stover practically fixes the whole prequel trilogy retroactively and turns the movie into a more psychological, philosophical action thriller. He cuts out the worst stuff, fixes actors' reactions and lines to be less comical, and dedicates a lot of pages to expanding everyone's characterization and filling in plot holes so their decisions and motivations make sense. It comes out as the movie George Lucas had in his head but just couldn't figure out when he held sole creative control.

Stover missed the point of the movie and rewrote the Jedi to be cool and badass defenders of peace and justice, especially Obi Wan who becomes literally the Jedi ideal of a humble hero in perfect communion with The Force.

This despite much of the plot being driven by the Jedi's arrogance and hubris and the stated fact that while sitting in their ivory tower protecting the interests of the government instead of the people they've lost touch with The Force and can't see any of the threats in their midst. And despite both actors playing Obi Wan as a showboating liar (from a certain point of view) in way over his head even after he's dead.

It's less a "fix" and more "the story fans who didn't understand either trilogy wanted".

chitoryu12 posted:

That’s the exact opposite of the plot though? He even has Yoda admit that they lost to the Sith because they had grown complacent and were unprepared for how the galaxy changed.

While also making Obi Wan an explicit savant. It's a confusing mishmash of movie scenes played straight and movie scenes flipped on their head so that the Jedi are good and smart and only architects of their own downfall due to dastardly villainy and bad luck. Even Dooku is changed into tragic, brilliant, noble figure instead of a power-hungry posh moron.

This fixes the film for a lot of Star Wars fanatics.

Like that's the simple overarching narrative but none of the actual events of the movie make sense in light of that. You left out the bit where the bigger rear end in a top hat's plan revolves around Padme convincing the senate to install bigger rear end in a top hat in the senate seat. But the whole movie revolves around the planetary blockade and attempts to stop them getting to Coruscant and repeated attempts to kill Padme as well as the jedis helping her and also the interruptions to all communications out of the planet and also Darth Maul's mission is to try to kidnap her. None of it makes sense in light of the bigger plan.

The phantom menace of Sheev's plan is that he wins no matter the outcome of the crisis he's manufactured. He doesn't even care that his apprentice dies, Darth Maul is only there to distract/scare Jedi.

Create drama > leverage panic to gain power > cackle maniacally. Basic politics.

And just like with Xanth, it's the less famous series that have the really hosed up sexual stuff (not even sure where to begin with Piers Anthony as there's so much, his short story anthology (where admittedly most were originally published in playboy) is pretty up there though) - I mean I didn't notice anything weirdly hosed up about sexuality when I first read the Pern books, but The Tower And The Hive really had me wondering wtf was wrong with her.

Anne McCaffrey made several deliberate attempts to break into the erotic sci-fi market. Sex (with rapey space lizard/beast men) sells, it's not all unseemly subtext, but unseemly text and unseemly back of the book-jacket synopsis as well.

Nope. He overcomes it by realising that such lofty and fine things aren't for him, a simple hobbit born to serve his betters. He decides instead to give up the ring to orcs so he can die at his master's feet where he belongs.

Sam is a despicable caricature of Tolkien's idealised servant/poor.
