Lisa Simpson is a great character in the early Seasons, when the writers remember that she's a little girl. She plays with Malibu Stacy dolls, giggles about boys, goes along with Bart's schemes sometimes, and has occasional moments where she doesn't understand some grown-up concept because she's a child.

After she became a vegetarian, a Buddhist, an environmentalist, a social activist, and God knows what else, she just became a boring irritating wet blanket like Marge.

please help me meme thread

i am looking for a video that is basically a rapid-fire compilation of people getting hit with things, loud noises, explosions, etc. but it's set to a techno/dubstep beat and the impacts and explosions are perfectly synced to the music. the song is one that i've heard in a variety of meme videos before. it's an assault on the senses and is less than a minute long.

i know that someone knows which one i'm talking about

People double-space after periods when typing on a typewriter, because typewriters use a fixed width for every character. The document becomes somewhat more readable by double-spacing.

Double spacing did not start with movable type, because the kerning and spacing of each line was set correctly by the typesetter using spaces of variable width, or with small wedges that would automatically justify the text.

If you're typing on a word processor made after 1984 and using a variable-width font, the computer is already placing the correct space after each period. Double-spacing in this situation is incorrect. Microsoft Word will highlight it as a grammar error, and many other programs will just automatically correct it to a single space.

tl;dr double spacing is always wrong unless you're using a typewriter

No the gently caress it will not. I mean, maybe there is an optional setting, but it doesn't do that out of the box. Not in American English settings at least.

I was taught to double space. My high school still taught typing classes on "word processors" which were glorified typewriters. It's just muscle memory now.

Well, you're wrong. If you type only in monospaced fonts you can be right again though.

We were always told, when bartending, that in the event of a miscalculation on the customer's part, that if possible, you ask them to clarify, and barring that, you use the "smaller" amount. ie: Bill is $20, they write in $5, but total it out as $27. In this instance, you get a $5 tip because that's the smaller value, as opposed to a $7 tip.

It's bullshit, because more often than not you can tell what the intended tip was, even if there are mistakes with the math. Not only that, but the most common mistakes were always the total line, not the tip line. I should be able to enter the tip as written, and not have to worry about some shitlord manager forcing me to take the smaller amount.

i always make my tips round to an even number so i can just put 39- or whatever and it's easy to figure out what i meant even if I miscalculated

I'm not joking when I say I would actually love to hear more about how this scene was localized into other languages.

The French dub is surprisingly true to the English script. They use "saumon vapeur" (steamed salmon) which rhymes pretty well with "jambon vapeur" (steamed ham).

Here's a fairly literal translation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1ioMCuR5bo

"Well, here I am, Seymour. I found it despite your directions."
"Ah, welcome, Mr. Inspector! Are you ready to savor a memorable lunch?"
(kitchen)
"Oh, Lord! My roast is screwed*. But if I -- could pass fast-food for real home cooking...ha ha ha ha! Deliciously diabolical, Seymour!"
(door opens)
"What is --"
(theme song in English)
"Ah, Mr. Inspector, himself! I'm pulling my calves on the windowsill, a stretching exercise. Does it tempt you?"
"Is it normal, that smoke that's coming out of your oven?"
"Ah, that's not smoke, it's steam! Steam that's coming from my steamed salmon. Mm-mm, steamed salmon."
(bringing in the hamburgers)
"Are you ready to taste my delicious hamburgers?"
"But I thought we were going to eat steamed salmon."
"No, no! I said steamed HAM! That's what I call hamburgers."
"You say <<steamed ham>> for hamburgers."
"Yes, it's a regional dialect."
"Ah-ha-ha-ha. From what region?"
"Mmmfrom the north of the state of New York."
"Really. I come from Utica and I've never heard anyone employ the expression <<steamed ham>>"
"Ah, well, not Utica. It comes from the region of Albany."
"I see."
(eating)
"I think that these hamburgers resemble those from Krustyburger."
"Oh-ho-ho-ho, no! They're authentic Skinnerburgers! It's an old family recipe."
"For...steamed ham."
"Yes."
"And you call this <<steamed ham>> but it's evident that this is grilled meat."
"Eum...ah...you know...there's a thing that...excuse me for an instant."
"Go ahead."
(kitchen is on fire)
"Ahhhh! It was formidable, we had a good moment, I'm completely spent**."
"Yes, I'll be going -- bloody hell***, what is happening inside there??"
"An aurora borealis."
"Ah -- an aurora borealis! At this time of the year, at this hour of the day, in this region of the country, and localized exclusively inside your kitchen??"
"Yyyes."
"...could I see it?"
"Nnno."
(outside)
"Seymour! The house is aflame!"
"No, mother! It's the magic of the great north!"
"Well, Seymour, you are a curious fellow. But I acknowledge that you make a good steamed ham."
(walks away)
"Help! Help!"

Pretty good overall. Redubbing it with the English translation of the French dub I think would be a pretty spicy one

* the actual word here is "fichu," which could mean damned, lost, rotten, etc

** flapie -- drained, weary, exhausted

*** "bon sang", literally "good blood"

Well my daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze
Now, I don't blame him 'cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Memelord"
Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk
It seems I had to fight my whole life through
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Memelord"
Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean
My fist got hard and my wits got keen
Roam from town to town to hide my shame
But I made me a vow to the moon and stars
I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name
Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew
At an old saloon on a street of mud
There at a table, dealing stud
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Memelord"
Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye
He was big and bent and gray and old
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Memelord!' How do you do!?
Now you gonna die!"
Yeah that's what I told 'em
Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer
I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile
And he said, "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I know I wouldn't be there to help ya along
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong"
Yeah he said, "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do
But ya ought to thank me, before I die
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
'Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you "Memelord"
Yeah what could I do, what could I do
I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
Called him my Pa, and he called me his son
And I come away with a different point of view
And I think about him, now and then
Every time I try and every time I win
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Memelord! I still hate that name! Yeah

This is lazy as gently caress man
