Sociolinguists don't use the term accent because it's pejorative. There are many "dialects"of American English and everyone has one and probably code switches. Some are close to SAE which makes people think they "have no accent". Many people spend their careers arguing whether some dialects are sufficiently unique that they should be consisted separate languages, like AAE or British English or the more regionally isolated ones with smaller discourse communities.
