Texas Monthly has an article about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's creation that's pretty fun to read. I didn't know it was basically a cheap student film and almost nobody made money or found fame from it. Except Leatherface. https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/they-came-they-sawed/

Teri McMinn, the actress who was impaled on the meat hook, was driving her Volkswagen bus from Austin to Houston when she and her girlfriend decided to pick up a hitchhiker. He turned out to be talkative and said he’d been to a drive-in the previous evening and that they “wouldn’t f—ing believe this movie I saw.” He then proceeded to tell the whole story of Chainsaw, until McMinn couldn’t wait any longer and said, “Do you recognize me?” “I thought he was going to have a coronary,” she says now, but it was the first time she realized the movie would have an actual life outside Austin. This is the tale of a roboticist from Japan constantly pushing the notion of humanity and the Uncanny Valley as far as it can go; he dreams of coming out the other side with something indistinguishable from a human. Or maybe something just to have sex with? Or maybe chasing his own immortality? He has a lot of goals for himself. https://www.wired.com/2017/10/hiroshi-ishiguro-when-robots-act-just-like-humans/

I’d like to imagine that guy, sitting in his lab, feverishly trying to decide whether he should follow the advice of the little Japanese angel on his one shoulder - *creating an advancement like this would be an amazing achievement, imagine the possibilities* Or the little anime Japanese devil on the other shoulder saying - *do it so you can gently caress it and get richer than any human has before*

I hadn't read the original story, so perhaps I was struck a bit differently by this article. It's got some horrific poo poo, but I found it to be overall an uplifting and hopeful story, in that she's safe, has people who love and care about her, and seems to be living the best possible life, given the circumstances.

Well, when I read the original I had the feeling of "well, at least she can start some semblance of a normal life" And then I read this and realize "No, she really can't because it was too late in her development to overcome 7 years of deprivation" But yes, ultimately she's safe and in an environment where people not only care for her but are equipped to do so.

She will never live a normal life. The damage was too much too young. But she’s happy. She’s laughing. She’s being hugged and hugging back. It’s not a full life, but it’s something. Hopefully it’s enough. Plus her bed doesn’t have maggots now, and frankly that by itself is a just a major step up.

Man, that was a tough read. At least other that the complete and total failure of her mother, it sounds like everybody involved did the right thing and she's getting the best life possible given the circumstances. To me though, the saddest part is the price her adoptive father had to pay to get her to this point. The guy really has a heart of gold and listening to him in that article, I could really feel, not regret, but I guess just a lot of sadness about what he has missed in his own life to make sure she got the best life she could. That's what really got to me, the guy deserves to be so much happier than I got the feeling he was.
