I know that RA greatsword tanking is the hotness for endgame frontliners, but how viable would it be to run a line of heavily armored, shielded warhammerers focused on outlasting the enemy? I'm thinking something with battle forged, brawny, shield expert, recover, hammer mastery, and probably crippling strikes, fearsome, and executioner. other perks added to taste

Oh btw I've figured out how to hack your dude's starting traits

There's a decent (if obviously written by a non english speaker) guide on Steam here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=598903989

Basically you take off all your gear, save, then open up the save file in a hex editor.

look for the four-character strings in your bro's descriptions that match the list in that guide and/or are between an "00" block and a "13 c3 03 58" block

replace them with the strings listed

#noshame

Theoretically you can use this to hack your dudes to high holy hell but adding more traits than they start with "naturally" or changing star values is complicated and not coming through the english barrier there.

You can also use this to change your perk points pretty easily, even in between level-ups. In the absence of mod tools, I might use that to ensure I still get perks past 11. Maybe once every other level or something? I dunno

Not at all, you just gotta find the field for where perk points are stored and change it from 0 to however many you'd like. I tried it last night, based on the info in that guide, and it worked fine

Today on Maury: Is Gifted a trap perk for our nation's mercenaries?

It seems like a solid choice for your forgettable shitbirds, but if you've got a NICE!!! bro who's gonna be foreverially employed, with fully RA'd sword, permanent battle forged armor, etc etc, then the stats you gain from Gifted are worth like 3-4 levels past 11, which is cool, but the opportunity cost is a perk slot, and you only ever get like 10 of those.

Do enemies go on the offensive based on the number of ranged weapons you field, or based on the odds of them getting hit by your arrows? If it's the former, I wonder how viable it would be to stick some dinky-rear end crossbows on your unshielded guys in order to force the bad guys to come to you

I'm not sure its even possible to do that fight short of retreat tactics.

Interesting. I don't think there can be more than one black monolith per game, so it sounds like the map maybe points you in the direction of a place guaranteed to have unique gear, rather than generating a site for you

The math is kinda wonky on headhunter, remember.

Agreedo on steel brow, though. Endgame armor might make it possible to shrug off the occasional (occasional) bolt to the brains, but (a) you have to get there first, and (b) when you do, a great big orc with a great big axe will show up to gently caress you in the butt (and noggin)!!! and he won't be gentle!!!

Honestly I find nine lives to be better for my backline anyway if i'm planning on keeping them around. Any stray instakill bolt instead drops your dude to 1hp and backliners usually go next, so they can just back right off.
this is an interesting point, and it may inform my future backliner choices. also, do you folks find you get much use out of overwhelm? I'm kind of thinking of dropping it, since by the time the lines meet I'm more or less shooting at targets of opportunity, rather than making informed debuff choices based on advanced damage mitigation calculus

Even for single target damage, I think 2h has a slight edge. 1handers to get 2 chances to hit, though, which I guess might give them a slight advantage, in theory. If you spec for Duelist you'll deffo outshine 2handers in 1-on-1 fights, but you're losing out on the defense provided by RA or shields, so that's pretty dangerous!

...unless you're leatherface wearing your nice set of davkuls, I guess!! You could probably run a super effective dodge/nimble/battle forged/duelist with that stuff on. 18 fatigue for the full set of armor. Crazy 2h axe murderer would still probably be more effective for crowds tho.

Getting back to this, yeah, this is what I feel like I need to figure out: which set of tactics to use against which enemies, etc.

Flails work great against Noble war enemies.

The spear/pike wall seems like it would work best against undead? Maybe orcs?

Warhammer and . . . I guess cleavers and swords vs orcs?

Maces seem like also an anti orc weapon mostly?

I feel like in a group of twenty dudes, I have room for about four to six back liners (mostly bows, maybe two banner/pike/xbow dudes), about four to six two hander users (do far I prefer greatswords, maybe two hammerers for flanks), and that leaves 8 to 12 shieldwall guy slots I'm never quite sure how to specialize.
warhammers work pretty well against noble house troops too. all that armor goes byebye fast

Well, here's your guy's stats, for one:

A good landmark for those is the first 09 digit after 68 75 6D 61 6E ("human"), since that'll always be your ap. The stats always follow the order listed.

Edit: added level and perk points. Level is gonna be that lonely 01 (or whatever his level actually is) after your guys name field. Unused perk points is the one directly after that. If you want to start with, I dunno, 10 perks, just change the 00 to 0A. I might use this to give my guys perks every 2 or 3 levels after 11, just for kicks. Maybe. Who knows.

You can also use a hex editor to clone your gear by studious use of naked saves and clothed saves. It'll involve some precise cut/pasting, but at the end of the day you can deck everyone out in the Emperor's Armor for a full squad of Glitter Boys. You could also all be Davkuls.

That is of course extremely ill-advised. A better use might be cloning the Fangshire helm (if you bought the supporter edition or whatever it's called) for an interesting take on the early game. If I ever buy that DLC I might start an Expert run, give everyone Fangshires, and go maximum night raider to get past the crazy bandit curve in early expert.

i think its still in the same place the guide says. save one game with your guy wearing a bunch of stuff, then save again with him naked, you'll get a pretty good idea of which bytes or whatever correspond to equipped gear. if you're good with your copy/pasting, you can copy the stuff from one guy and paste it into other naked bros. if you gently caress up the paste and leave an extra digit somewhere your game won't load though, so be thorough and make backups!!

Not that I know of, which is a shame, because being stylish is important on today's battlefield. A davkul killfiend can get by with orcish weapons, since their crude style matches the hellish meatsuit. Emperor Goldfinger though? Best I can think of is a crypt cleaver or something

I wish they had more detail on how line of sight blocking for ranged attacks work. There is a loading screen tooltip that says if you fire into a bunch of stuff you're bound to hit something, and when I've fired a 5% chance to hit an enemy, who is being blocked by another enemy, I do hit one of them more often than the bad odds would suggest.

Don't take this as gospel or nothin, but I'm pretty sure that whatever percentage of the hit chance is deducted from your blocked target is just transferred to the blocker. So say you have like a 70% chance to hit a dude, but now suddenly someone steps in front and blocks you. Let's say that drops your odds of hitting your target from 70% to 40%, well I'm pretty sure the dude in front now has a 30% chance of getting hit, with another 30% chance of the arrow hitting the grass somewhere.

Basically the only times I ever worry about blocking is if it's terrain that's doing it, or if it's some rear end in a top hat with his shield up. Or if it's one of my guys, obviously.

I'm disappointed. The game is a really good sandbox that would only become amazing with really solid mod capabilities.

That is incredibly stupid of them. Literally all they have to do is unobfuscate the code. The directory structure and all the relevant files are right there in the zip, but I can't do anything with them because they're all .cnut files. I get that workshop integration might be more trouble than it's worth, but that's hardly mandatory for having a modding scene...

They've got 2,600 reviews on steam and from what I've heard that's usually somewhere between 0.5-5% of your players :v: I dunno how long Battle Bros was in development but that is a lot of sales for a first game with no big publisher backing it. It's probably a combination of a long dev cycle, team fatigue, and them being based out of a high living-expense country (Germany). A 2.5 year dev cycle and equal shares in the team would mean, if they sold 52000 copies, that their programmer is making a below market rate salary.

Steamspy (which, admittedly, is not a very accurate source) had them at ~40k when they left early access and ~80-95k total this month. I guess they were aiming for something north of 100k?

I'm veering off-topic here, but with the summer sale coming up, all you German-Pixelgame lovers should take a look at The Curious Expedition. Aside from being a turn-based party-management thingie, it's not very similar to Battle Bros, but it's super charming, and there's a lot of (interactive!) event variety and a solid amount of replay value for the price. Should be under 10bux in the sale.
