Local wifi connection, IIRC. Causes you to have a full bar of health and RP when you go in no matter what, treats defeats as nothing, and you get to keep the spoils with not time passed. You also get the ability o play as just about every townsfolk with your stat line, each having different skills to make up for the lack of transformation, like Raven gets fire immunity, and Sofia can eat failed dishes for actual recovery.

Mostly because these are skills they have in the normal game, so the spoilered skill probably works in non-multiplayer gameplay too.

Bouquet Complete

Music: Fall

Short one today, for reasons that will become obvious soon.

Link's gonna be busy this morning, so we're not jumping right into a request for once.

But there's always time for Pia being weird.

P-Pia?!

Why are you...hissing?!

This particular bit of Pia weirdness is tied to the request of hers we recently finished and overrides whatever she would have normally said today.

Also it's Blaise's birthday. His tastes are pretty much the same as Rusk's, so he'll be getting Hot Chocolate too since it's super easy to make.

Hi Sharance, this is dad.

He talked funny, and was drawing some flying whale. But why didn't he paint the whale rainbow colors?
Why does it need to be rainbow colors?

That's nice, cram this hot chocolate in your facehole.

:geno:

This armor's run its course, let's get back to something more normal.

Original edgy link do not steal.

With that out of the way, let's plot!

Wow! It's so pretty! Thank you very much!!
Oh, s-s-stop. I'm going to blush...
Now I'm sure we can get our feelings across!
I can't just sit here! I need to get going! Thank you, Shara!
Good luck!

It'd be nice if it was obvious all the flowers you grew were in it, but I'll take what I can get with DS graphics.

Hey Kuruna, this is enough to make up for whatever horrible things our ancestors did to your people, right?

Music: Sadness

Everyone in town collaborated to create this Bouquet, Kuruna.
We made it for you because the settlement means a lot to us, too!
Well...I guess the flowers are pretty. Sort of. But the Hornless have caused my people such anguish......Is it time for me to open my mind and heart to the Hornless?
Have you decided on a date for the Unity Festival?
You'll come?! Kuruna, thank you!
Oh, don't you dare misunderstand! I haven't forgiven the Hornless. But I didn't want to hold things up with my stubbornness.
Well, it doesn't matter why you did it. The point is that you DID.
So, as I asked: Have you decided on a date for the Unity Festival?
Oh, not yet. We were waiting for you to.agree to it.
Well, I've agreed to it. Any day works for me. Let me know when you have the festival scheduled.
Okay. I'll come back when we've worked the details out.
I'll be waiting.
Thank you, Kuruna. I know how hard this is for you.
...You're welcome.

Making progress! Time to hike back to Wells.

About the day of the Unity Festival", how about Fall 12?
Very well, we'll hold the Unity Festival on Fall 12. I'll let everyone know. I'll leave it to you to tell those in the settlement.
Okay!

The Unity Festival is the only festival in the game that doesn't have a set date(for obvious reasons). By default it picks a day two days ahead, but won't overlap with other festivals(and presumably also birthdays).

It also contains a metric shitload of dialogue, so it's going to get an update all to itself.

Music: Love

Fall 12? I'll be there. And since you're so persistent in inviting me...I assume you'll be my personal escort for the event?
Oh, of course!
I'm relieved to hear that. I may not trust the Hornless...but at least I know you.
Thank you, Kuruna...
As long as I'm with you, I know I'll be okay. I'm looking forward to the festival.

:toot:

And with all that done with, we can talk to Kuruna normally again. Not that she has anything interesting to say today.

Onward to requests.

Sure thing.
I'll do the talking. You just re-stock the shelves with things.
Okay.

Huh? This is just paperwork. It's all claims and messages. Takes up lots of time.
Oh, I see...
Link. Thank you.
We're not done working.
It's just an excuse. As you can see, we don't have any customers. This store is based on the things that you guys bring to me.
That's not...
But I'm not talking.about this store. It's about Karina.
You know how she hated working the store and kept saying she wanted to go to the city.
You knew?
I'm her parent after all. I can tell what my girl's heart says.
Her heart says?
That girl, she doesn't really complain out loud. But she's thinking it. Wonder where she got it from. Always so picky.
Oh, I think I have an idea.
But...It's really my fault, I think.
Huh?

She just didn't say much so as not to burden me.
It was her way of showing compassion.
...
But she's changed a bit since meeting you. Just a while ago, she wanted to open her own store!
Although it didn't go so well. But...

Hazel...
So...Thanks. Link.

Well, that's it.
What?!
We're done here. Today's pay is included in what I gave you.
So professional.
You gotta be! Now go on home.

Keep looking after Karina.
Okay.

Being lonely almost feels like a luxury.

How to make a sapphire brooch: Smash together three sapphires. Done. Yes, sapphires are pink in this game - irl they can actually be all sorts of colors, along with the traditional blue.

In the morning, Link dispenses some poorly-worded advice. I can do requests today without an issue, but I don't want any active going into tomorrow. And "I should go home today" just means "don't stay awake all night like an idiot, because the festival scripting assumes you wake up normally".

As usual, everyone has something to say about the upcoming festival.

...

Sadly, since Raven's reveal is tied into her requests, I'm pretty sure we never get a "PS we have a half-phoenix person along with our half-wooly, our dwarf, our elf, and our insane mermaid."

I can see how nervous you are. Don't worry, I'll help you out if something goes wrong.
So don't be so nervous.
Okay.

Don't go out of your way to make a good impression during this historic reunification or anything.

Keep the dream alive, Pia.

...it's the middle of fall.

You don't have anything good for sale anyway. :colbert:

Yes.

I mean, I do kind of want to finish the plot at some point.

Have we considered just locking Marian in a basement somewhere until the festival's over?

It might help if you did something about your insane granddaughter before she caused another interracial incident.

Since this festival is the first to include the settlement folks, they get dialogue too! Including the first new thing Zaid has said in several weeks.

W-Why would I be uneasy about something like that?

Y-yes?!

Yes it is. I'm also taking credit for assembling the bouquet and crafting the brooch and ribbon.

I went to do a repeat of the 'someone left stuff here, take it if you want' simple Raven quest(because this one's a good way to get at least one decent thing out of a simple request without much work), and it turns out there was actually some interesting stuff involved.

Yes, you can murder things with a weapon-carrot.

Next up, a proper request. Or at least the start of one.

You have more potential as a cook than my own children.
What?!
I know how it may sound, but I have high hopes for them. But, Link...I have the experience to be able to tell. You have more potential to be a cook.
Th...That...
So lets find out. Could you make me something? Your task is to make Fried Veggies.
But...
I am making a formal request. It may seem selfish, but I must see for myself.
Okay. Fried Veggies, is it?
Please.

I almost have all the stuff to make it.

The general store happens to have onions for sale...

...but I'll have to get a cabbage the old-fashioned way.

By this point in the game you really need to be taking notes about which quests need what items, because so many things will be left hanging several days while you wait to grow/fish stuff.

Do you like dialogue? Because today's festival provided 460 screenshots' worth of dialogue. For comparison, a normal two-day update is about 500 screenshots, many of which are of things that never make it to the update itself(boring dialogue, duplicate screenshots of events, etc).

We're railroaded directly to festival events. Luckily I'll have plenty of time later to water crops.

Did I keep you waiting?
No, I just got here.too, actually.
Oh, that's a relief! Shall we, then?
I'll lead the way!
Thanks again for agreeing to accompany me today. It means a lot.

Is something wrong?
I've just been thinking...After everything I've said about the Hornless, am I really welcome? Are you sure that I won't be causing any trouble?
Don't worry about it. Everyone's accepted you. You'd cause more trouble if you DIDN'T come!
You have a point there.

No cold feet allowed. The festival must go on!

It'd help if you'd stop stopping every few feet to talk.

As long as you're here, I know the Unity Festival will go well.
You're welcome!

I'd make a snide comment about how this clearly isn't everyone in town, but considering this number of characters is already murdering the framerate enough to audibly slow the music...

Kuruna, please wait by the tree.
With pleasure.

Indeed I do.

And...Kuruna, I believe you have something to say now?
I do.

Maybe you should stop using the vaguely racist term for humans? Maybe?

I'm the univir elder. I oversee every single decision in our settlement.
And despite that, I had opposed the Unity Festival until the very end.
But my mind and heart were closed. I did not see the Hornless as anything but savages. But I don't see savages in front of me. Instead, I feel kindness.
Thanks, Kuruna. I know that had to be hard for you.

Fade to white. Well, that was quick.

Actually, no, it's not. Everyone in town has something unique to say(as usual for a festival), and they also have completely different unique things to say if we talk to them while Kuruna's tagging along with us.

I wasn't kidding about the dialogue.

I'd like to meet all the Hornless in town. Could you introduce me?
Of course!
Let's go, then! It's time to meet some Hornless!

The true purpose of the unity festival is reminding you how insane everyone is now that you've had several in-game seasons to get used to them. Remember that Kuruna has never met any of these people before.

And I bid you the warmest of greetings as well! Hmm...Aren't you a little...young to be an "elder"?
I'm actually older than you.

Something something nine thousand year old demon.

Ah, that's right. The univir are quite long-lived. I should've known better.
No, I don't mind. I take it as a compliment.
(Kuruna seems...mellow!)

Now that the main ceremony's done, Wells is the only person left in the plaza. People do move a bit throughout the day, which is annoying for keeping track of who I have and haven't talked to yet, but it's managable.

So...I know this is out of nowhere, but what kind of food do you like?
Hmm...Cake and Yam Dessert are amazing...And one bite of Chocolate Cake is just pure bliss!
Yeah! Yeah! Chocolate!
Mmm... Just thinking of it makes my mouth WATER!
And my eyes water that I'm not eating it THIS VERY SECOND!
They're really hitting it off!

Gotta lower her guard before we get to the really crazy people.

Well, I'm from out of town, so I don't even know or care about what happened between you and the humans. I'm just happy to meet some new neighbors!
Me too!
You'll stop by our bath, won't you, Kuruna?
I'll try to make some time.

This is just the greeting bit I usually cut out, not festival dialogue, but Pia's still being weird(er than usual).

...
Oh, um...
Horn!
What?!
So cool! I bet you're fast swimmers! Oh, but if you swam in the bath--
it'd be way dangerous?!
Huh...?!

Note that Link doesn't attempt to explain Pia at all. He knows it's futile.

Oh, I didn't mean any disrespect! I'm Sakuya. Oh, by the way, I have a question about that thingie on your shoulder!
What about him?
Have you thought of using him as a ventriloquist's dummy? I bet it'd be a real moneymaker!
A ventriloquist's dummy?
WHAT A DUMMY! WHAT A DUMMY!

What?! We've met before?
Indeed! It's been a long time, Horn Girl!
I'm pretty sure I would've remembered someone who called me "Horn Girl"...
Sherman has an...odd way of communicating, to say the least! Just flip what he says to the opposite!
That defies logic!
The feeling is mutual! It's like passing a kidney stone to meet you, Horn Girl!
I...should get out of here before my brain turns to mush!

:allears:

Over by the Sharance Tree, Zaid and Ondorus are avoiding interacting with anyone new. Relatable.

...What does that even mean, Zaid? Just make sure you behave, okay?
I'll be good.

You know, I'm 99% sure Zaid only exists because the settlement would have been kind of sad if it was only Kuruna and Ondorus. He manages to be a less impactful character than Blaise, of all people.

Hmm...
What's wrong?
I have caused you so much anguish.
Don't worry about it. I was merely waiting for the moment your conscience would awaken.
Thank you for your patience.

Back to actual introductions.

Nice to meet you, too, Shara. What do you do here in town?
I work in my grandfather's flower shop.
Is that where the bouquet was made?
Actually...I made that myself.
You did? It...moved me tremendously.
Thanks, but I still have a lot to learn.
If that's the case, I can't wait to see your next arrangement! I've never seen flowers exude such...emotion before. It was truly a cathartic experience.
I'm glad I was able to be a part of bringing our communities together.

Yes. It was all Shara. I didn't put any blood, sweat, tears, or farm time into getting the stuff for the bouquet.

Hmm...It appears Hornless children are much cuter than I had been led to believe.
Your horn is pretty!
You...really think so?
It is! It's so...sharp! I wish I had a horn, too!

:3:

What's that red thing? Is that part of your hair, Kuru?
NO! Why would you think that?!
Oh, a horn. Can I touch it? Paint it? Carve it? Draw it?
Wh-Why are you just standing there smiling?! Who IS this crazy lady?!
This is Daria. Be careful, she's kinda...dangerous.
Why didn't you WARN me?!

Because she's pretty great when she's not trying to paint everything rainbow. Also when she is.

So who's Horn Babe?
Ahem! I'm Kuruna, the univir elder.
Cool. 'Sup, elder? I'm Carlos. I run a fishing resort with my sister. Bring your horn on down.and get to fishin'!
I will, uh, take your suggestion under advisement.

Well, I guess it's nice to know I'm not the only one.
Ahem! I'm Kuruna, the univir elder. Nice to meet you!
G-Good to meet you! I'm Carmen!
I run a fishing resort with my brother. It's, uh, nice to meet you. ...And that's all I got.
Anyway, stop by our resort, Horn Chick!
I'll...consider it.

:v::j:: "Have you considered fishing? We have some personality traits, but 99% of what we do revolves around fishing. We loving love fishing. You want to fish too, right? Everyone loves fishing, RIGHT?!"

I'm the head chef! If you want the best in human cuisine, stop on by!
Interesting. Do you have any...cake?
Do I EVER!
Oh. This is certainly an...interesting development. Yes, most interesting. Perhaps I will stop by!

Ah, you run it all by yourself?
No, I actually have--
On second thought, yes. Yes, I do run it all by myself.
Uh...I get the feeling I'm not getting the whole story here.
What did I do to deserve this?! Didn't I raise her right...?
Raise who right?
Uh, let's get out of here, Kuruna!

Why don't we just have some fun?
O-Okay! Y-Y-You're right!
...

Collette managed to be so nervous she avoided showing Kuruna her character tic. Impressive!

Danger.

Hmmm. Too bad.
Why?
Horns have a lot of properties so they're great for making medicine. But they don't get any new ones that grow in. That's just too bad...
...
P-Please don't mind her. It's just the way she is.

"Also nobody in town ever tries to do something about her being a constant health hazard. Just get good at running away from her syringe-revolver, it'll be fine."

I'm going to take a moment to point out how terribly Kuruna's cape is handled on her model. It basically acts as a stiff board. Which looks fine when she's facing forward but is really noticable when she's moving, especially from the side.

It's not a job. It's a lifestyle.
You're so humble. I can't believe that you and Zaid are both dwarves!
I'm not sure about the whole "humble" thing...
Yeah, it's more that I'm too lazy to go outside. I get bored doing anything but forging.
How could you not want to experience nature's bounty?!
Don't try to figure Gaius out. That's just how he rolls.

After all, I've heard rumors about you even when I was a little girl!
...I'm sorry.
No, I should be apologizing, Kuruna.
Why do you say that?
Because I hated you. Without even knowing why. Just because I was told to hate.
Don't feel bad. It was the same with me.
I never even thought of it that way...
And just think! All we had to do was talk.
And I hope we get the chance to do that a lot more in the future!
That would be really nice, Marjorie.

If only ending irl racism was as simple as ending video game racism. "Oh, we just talked to each other and now I realize I was an idiot who just hated you because someone told me to. RACISM: SOLVED."

Uh...have we met?
I can't wait to start a long, meaningful friendship with you!
But...you said we'd already met?
Please come by when you're busy! We can hit the town!
How could we hit the town if I'm busy...?

I like that Sherman merits an explanation of the opposite-speak, but Sofia doesn't. Sink or swim, Kuruna!

...
I'm the univir elder.
I work at our weapon shop.
...
...
Do you...hate me?
...No.

Evelyn, your clothes...defy description.
Thank you! I design them all myself! And I'll make you some clothes as well, Kuruna!
I'm...not sure if I want that.

You will wear a cape made of fish scales and turnips, and you will like it.

Karina works at the general store.
Ah, it's good to see the Hornless value a strong work ethic!
I wouldn't reach that conclusion if I were you. At least in Karina's case.
(Hey, don't spill my secret.)
(I don't think that's much of a secret.)

Now that I've finally talked to everyone in town, I think it's time for a breather. And what better way to take a break than by murdering slimes?

Kuruna's a mage, incidentally.

Even though I'm in the middle of a historic unification festival, I can still still take Kuruna on a date. Really. And...the game was obviously not set up to anticipate this, judging by the time paradox dialogue here. :v:

Music: Date

This is also when I realized I've been using the wrong music for dates all this time. Oops. I'm sure the five people who click the music links will be heartbroken.

Why is that?
Shara told me that there were flowers here.
You're pretty close to Shara these days. When did you become friends?

Good question, considering Kuruna only met her an hour or two ago!

After the Unity Festival, she began to visit our settlement. I'd speak to Shara by the tree, and we became close.

TIME PARADOX.

Um, yes...I suppose she is...
?
I'm not sure that this is the time or the place to say that, though.
...?

Link: Densest motherfucker alive.

!!
Y-You have a good point...I'm sorry.
Shara's flowers are always so elegant. I'm really a fan of her work.
A fan of a friend?
Yes, that's right.
You could learn how to coordinate from her.
I know the basics, but what you really need is good taste.

You...
...
You should really visualize your responses in you head before saying them.
I was just surprised.
...
I'm sorry.

And because it's pretty great too:
>Not making them?

Were you listening?
I want to see your flowers.
But my flowers...
What's wrong with them?
Well...I don't understand it...But my flowers began to fight each other.
What?!
Ondorus said it was probably the influence of my magic.
That's pretty crazy.
It doesn't make me happy at all.

And convergence.

Yes, they can be a great source of comfort.
Yes. Being alone is sad...

That's not true.
Really? When you're alone, you seem a bit sad.
No I don't...I usually think of sweet snacks, so I should look happy.
I don't suppose maybe you're just longing for sweets.
That could be it.

And because it's funny again:

>Easily scared.

That's not true.
Really? I heard from Ondorus.
Heard what?
That when you were young, the thunder--
Noooo!!! Noooo!!! Noooo!!!

And now back to the :words: festival.

Music: Festival

Once it's late enough in the day, everyone has new things to say! I'll spare you the boring ones this time around.

:frogsiren:

Uh, on second thought, maybe we shouldn't!

What the hell were you expecting?!

In fact, I'm not sure how we're even the same species!

That's because they're not. Gaius is Dwarfius Coolius and Zaid is Dwarfius Boringus. Obviously.

Yue's not interested in our historic reunification event, but she does have a pretty sweet axe for sale.

Yoink.

...and then I do save trickery to go back to 9AM(but I still have that axe in the 'real' save), because there's more dialogue for talking to everyone without Kuruna in tow.

That's a great idea!
Cool! Can you think of a good horn-related joke?
That's YOUR job!
My job?! It's YOUR routine!

Okay Hazel, I know Karina must be frustrating to live with, but maybe it's time to turn down the savagery a little.

They should've rephrased that to a single "human."

Are you copying Sofia?
What do you mean?
Really, it's a wonderful festival. (All you do is talk?)

Yeah. (I don't mind 'em. They gave me a day off.)
...
You three need to work on your communication skills.

Sometimes I wish you would've shown up here sooner...but nothing we can do about that now.
We're not here to talk about the past. We're here to build a future!
Indeed. I believe today represents the foundation of an unwavering alliance!
And just think! Who could've even dreamed of that as recently as last week?

Danger.

With the Unity Festival over with, Link resumes his quiet life of farming. Clearly the plot is over with forever now and there's definitely not more waiting after we complete certain things.

...it probably helps a lot that you guys have a whopping three people, Kuruna.

To commemorate us finishing the Very Definitely Final Plot Thing, the Sharance Tree grew again.

But it doesn't look like the Sharance flowers have blossomed...

Link.

It's fall. :cripes:

I buy a variety of seeds in specific quantities that in no way, shape, or form suggests I'll need these specific vegetables for final dungeon things. Because we're definitely done with the plot, after all.

And now for a non-sequitur from Karina.

Weren't you scared?
When I started crying because I couldn't get down, Mom came. (Really yelled at me.)

Okay, Pia's extra-weirdness has gone on too long.

Let's go fix it.

Actually, uh...Hmm...
Yes?
Hrm...You...
You gotta come back around 7PM!
Okay...

Mysterious. Oh well, 7 is around when I get the usual daily talking/watering/mining chores done anyway. And there's something I need to get done, too

It's what I thought when I saw Gaius' work.
I see.

:3:

Back to business. I want some more monsters that give crafting materials when tamed. Scorpions are good because their drop adds a poison effect to weapons on upgrade. Status effects can get pretty nuts if you stack enough of them on one weapon.

As usual, the key is having huge piles of grass to shove at them until they give in. The game suggests Venom as a name, but we can do better than that.

Thanks to BlazeEmblem for the name.

More time is wasted mining and hammering tomato ghosts.

Indeed I did, good sir!
(She's being polite again...)
I, uh...I need...
I gots to clean the bath, baby! Come on in! The water's fine! Hop to it, hopper!
You need my help?
Yippee! You agree! Come on in and follow me!
But I didn't even agree to--

Link really should know the drill by now. There is no escape. You will do what you are voluntold to do, and you will like it.

Music: Town (Night)

Yeah.
Good. Now we might be able to have a normal conversation.
Uh..."normal"?
Don't worry about it! Anyway, just wait! I'm almost done here!
All right, then.
I'll give you a voucher for everything you did today! Go ahead and take a bath while I finish up!
Really? But...I just cleaned it!
Yup! Go ahead and plop in, buddy!
Don't mind if I do!

Done!
Oh, really?
Sorry to keep you waiting!
It's okay. It gave me some time to relax!
Hey, no fair!
Wait, you're the one who told me to take a bath in the first place!
Oh, forehead-slap! Duh! Then I'll just have to take one, too!
Well, if that's what works for you...

It's an anime-styled game with a hot spring/bath in it. Of course they're doing this. But to be fair, it's treated better than 99% of hot spring scenes, so...

Ah. Well, it's okay. I can stay over here.

And under the moon, they're all the more bestest-er!
"Bestest-er"?
But I'm glad you've had.the chance to relax. Looks like you're back to your old self, Pia!
I...am?
I wanted to talk about your strange behavior, but we ended up cleaning the bath instead! But...I guess nothing's new there!
Hey, be nice!
I'm just yanking your chain, Pia!
So, what was it? What did you want to tell me?
Well, this is hard for me to explain...

Yeah, I remember.
I'm like bubbles. I formed in the water, but I wasn't content to stay there.
That's a good comparison. Especially since you're both hard to grasp!
And bubbles can't exist without water.
Yeah, that's true.
That's why I latched on to baths. I left one body of water for another.
Yeah, I guess you did.
But one day, I heard a voice from above the water. Just like when I met Sakuya.
When I looked up, the moon was shining. And it was your voice that was calling me...
It...was?
Maybe bubbles that escape the water can float up and turn into little moons! That'd be so awesometacular!

Really makes you think, doesn't it?
Yep! I like thinking!

Oh, I know! I'll wash your back as your reward for cleaning!
But I'm on the men's side!
I know! I'll be right there!
Uh...if you insist!

But...why'd you turn into a Wooly?!
Wait, I thought you understood--
It was really fun to watch!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey, Link!
What?
I'm gonna shine just as bright as the moon!
Huh?
I mean, not literally! But that would be cool! Then I can plop in the bath with you!
Yeah, sounds good!
Uh... Wait, what?!

Well, gotta run! Ta-ta!
Wait, we're leaving it at that?

...
Uh, "normal" being relative in her case!

Pia: Solved.

Next on the agenda is catching a Shadow Panther and laughing at its weird jump animation.

Aargh! Almost had it!

It gets in the ball barn eventually. Very eventually.

Kudos to SimplyUnknown1 for the name.

Noire is important because Link can now be a panther rider. :black101:

...and have Noire do its goofy jump while he's on its back.

I immediately shuffle Noire and Sub0 into their own room, mostly because the other rooms are full of monsters that get right up in my face at all times and make it really annoying to collect their products. Might as well spread things out a little.

Despite how easy it is to get an endless supply of them by snagging a Shadow Panther, Panther Claws actually have a pretty high upgrade difficulty level. Which would mean more if failing a weapon upgrade did anything but waste RP.

Music: Town (Dawn)

In the morning,

I discover that the settlement folk will now gleefully tresspass on the farm to reach the village, using the same warp Link's been using to get to the settlement. Which really raises more questions about if they noticed it was there the entire time but never said anything, and how they didn't put two and two together much earlier.

Since the Univir(and Zaid) can now enter the human village at will, they're added to the list of people who will :words: at Link about upcoming festivals.

Why squid?
Who knows?

This line is just weird since squid is the "any time of day, any weather, any season, any location" catch.

Just blame Pia for it. It's easier that way.

And now for something you could easily miss if you're me and don't enter/exit the tree through the main entry 99% of the time(because it's easier to leave through the farm level after doing chores and to come back by spamming the Escape spell). Something very very important. I'm really not sure why this event trigger doesn't happen from Link going through either exit, honestly.

poo poo, they're on to me. They're finally holding an intervention to get me to eat something other than a single plate of pickles each day!

What is it?
Well, Link. Great job.
The festival was a great success.
Thank you very much.
Because of you, I think everything is OK now.
I'm glad to hear that. I'm always happy to help.
I'm counting on it.
So what brings you here today?
Nothing big.
We heard you have a girl you're really crazy about.
We wanted to help you out with that, Link. Here you go.

You're reading that right. Now that we've done all that plot bullshit, Link can finally get married!

You'll need it to propose.
It's pretty hard to make, but an engagement ring is important. It's a guy thing.

Lies. The engagement ring is actually incredibly easy to make. Assuming you've been paying any attention at all to accessory crafting, anyway.

Oh, and some tips. First, a bed. When you live together, a small bed is a great way to.start fights. So get a double bed.

Took care of that ages ago, dude. You should be able to see it from where you're standing.

Also take care of your requests. You have to be able to solve some problems.

This is a fancy way of saying "you have to complete the questline of the girl of your choice(including a few of her friends/family, if applicable) before marrying her." This is part of why I've been trying to do all the girls' quests evenly - this way there should be minimal catchup no matter who goons vote for. Except for Kuruna, since I couldn't even do most of her quests until the Unity Festival was done, but, well...I'm not starting voting yet, and that's entirely why. I figure readers should see at least some of her character arc before voting starts! That and I'd rather vote closer to when my backlog runs out and I play again.

One last thing. There is a tradition in these lands. The man asks the girl out to a scenic place, and proposes with a ring.
...
Ho ho. Don't blush.
So where is that?
Let's see...Around here...Privera:Flower Field, Sol Terrano:Star Dunes, Oddward:Rainbow Falls, and Vale:Icy Rosebush. If the girl doesn't love you back, she won't accept the ring.

Those are all the dating spots, conveniently enough. The RF wiki says you don't actually have to go on any dates to get married, but what fun is that?

Okay.
Don't forget the ring when you go to propose.
I'm looking forward to seeing who you pick.

I sure am glad that the plot is done forever so Link can get married in peace. Incidentally, an unmentioned(but hopefully obvious) requirement is that the girl in question has to be at 10 hearts of affection.

How to make an engagement ring: Mash together some stuff you can find in the second dungeon, at a difficulty level you should have reached several seasons ago. I get they were trying to keep it accessible for (bad and wrong) players who didn't touch crafting much, but sheesh.

On that note, here's a review of Link's skill levels, just because. I really need to remember short swords and dual blades exist. It's pretty comical how high elemental skills get without casting spells - most of them raise from more mundane activities, like watering crops or tilling soil.

And here's how much everyone loves Link. Zaid tried.

I appreciate the town's outlook on this festival. "None of us knows why this is a squid catching contest, but gently caress it, FESTIVAL."

It's also the one fishing contest Pia can 100% get behind.

Cool it with the RF2 probably-spoilers, Yue.

For once I buy a spell, mostly as an additional "oh poo poo I'm dying help" button.

Uh, vengeance for what?

I'm starting to think you don't actually know Pia at all, Link.

Sofia time.

Music: Date

Great! So...I've got a little request. I really hate Vale:Icy Rosebush!
Uh...what's the request?
Well, it's just that being with you is so boring!
So I thought that maybe we could go there together...
Sounds good! Let's head out, then!
You'll take me? I wouldn't like that in the least!

Music: Silence

Um, before you two head out, could I borrow Sofia?
What for?
It's between girls.
What's the problem?
It's BETWEEN GIRLS.
Uh, I'll just be stepping out, then!
You sure will be.

Look, Sofia. I want you to promise me something.
Promise you...what?

Ominous fadeout. This clearly isn't leading to a wacky mistunderstanding, at all.

See, everything is clearly fine.

Sofia?
Nothing. Nothing at all.

...
Sofia?
Let's go.

Music: Date

But a little cold.
True.
Hey, Sofia. I have a question for you. Why do you think it's so pretty here?
That's an odd question. Hmm...
Let me think.

Music: Silence

Sofia? What's wrong?
Uh, nothing.
What did Evelyn tell you, Sofia?
...

We'd better solve this quick, before she turns into start-of-the-game Raven! :gonk:

...Nothing.

Let's go home.
Already?!
...hold on! Did I offend you in some way?
NO!
...of course not.
Because I...because I adore you!
Oh no!

If you're paying attention at all, you've figured out the wacky misunderstanding already.

No! No! No! I didn't mean it that way!
I meant...well, you should be able to figure it out.
I should?

Sofia exits stage left.

I don't demand answers, Evelyn!

Yes, but she went right up to her room. She won't come out. Did you two have a fight while you were out or something?
I wouldn't exactly describe it that way. Sofia said that she adored me.
And your feelings aren't mutual?
No, I wouldn't say that.
But...she really meant she hates me.
Ah. Now it's clear.
What is?
You've basically become "fluent" in her language. If I'd known, I wouldn't have told her what I did.
What did you tell her?
I made her promise me that she wouldn't lie anymore. The more she likes someone, the harsher her words. So I wanted to help her break her habit.
I see.
But I guess that wasn't necessary.

Realistically speaking, that's a terrible habit she absolutely should break. In-game context, Evelyn's been around Link enough to realize he gets the oppositespeak now! And if nothing else, you knew he was expecting oppositespeak, so you should have given him a heads up! :argh:

I won't. She's a bit difficult to read...but she's worth it.

Do you wanna melt a snowman?

No.
...

...

Huh?
The stubborn me or the honest me. Which one don't you like?
Hmm...

Huh?
And I'm half-monster.

This is where The Reveal would have been if we hadn't plot-ted past it already.

Oh...
So you do you hate me when I'm a monster?
Well...of course I hate you.
I see. Thanks, Sofia.
Yes...

:toot:

Time for more monster taming. I want a Hornet because they produce Honey, which is needed for a few recipes.

What the hell kind of a name is that, game?

Have a much better one suggested by BlazeEmblem.

MyGod is a bit grumpy since I accidentally beat it up a bit before taming it, but it'll be better tomorrow.

My next target is a Silver Wolf, which has several annoying slimes on the same screen. Annoying because they resist a lot of my weapons and can heal themselves when they hit me. :argh:

But the monster train can't stop here.

They had the characters to make it Silver, but didn't. :iiam:

There. Name freely provided by Jade Rider.

Link is officially too cool for school now. Or whatever passes for school around here.

The rest of the night is spent upgrading the Demon Axe. That'll do nicely.

Happy Birthday To Link

Music: Festival

I've got Yams ridiculously close to max level. The fall crop festival should go without a hitch.

Of course, today's festival isn't that. Squid are found basically everywhere, so it's mostly a matter of your luck with spawns.

I forgot to show GudBoy's barn blurb yesterday, so here it is now.

Zaid and Ondorus, unsurprisingly, are a new set of characters who :words: at each other on festival days. It serves to give them some desperately needed dialogue variety.

Oh...Ondorus...could you spare me some squid?
There will be no cheating. You can catch it yourself.
You want me to go without food?!
I don't mind.
Oh, come on!

Yes, why is it squid? Surely it's not because they had to have one fishing contest a season and the more obvious ones(most fish, biggest fish, biggest variety of fish) were all taken. Surely.

And I really love screenshots with weird text highlighting and overly spelling out which festival this is.

Don't complain.

Not "still"!! It bothers me "every year"!

It's so ex-squid-zit!
Yeah, it sure is!
Now, you guys know we're just squidding around?!
Wow, they're really milking it.

...

Link is confirmed as a killjoy who hates puns.

Same general rules as every other fishing contest. This one has some praying to RNJesus because there are no 100% squid fishing zones, but it's still not too bad.

You can probably get better odds by picking a spot with fewer overall species of fish, but :effort:. The prize is just a pile of cooking bread, and I already have way more of that than I need.

In retrospect the bare minimum effort should have been going to a not-Fall dungeon, since there's a big variety of Fall-only fish, but again, :effort:.

Now I only have 3 mostly-useless cooking breads instead of 10. The tragedy.

Remember kids, littering is bad!

At least Carlos got to show off his talent for once.

Honestly, :agreed:. But I'm not a fan of fishing minigames in general.

Link is so mad about puns. Insquidentally, I am not.

Deep RF3 mysteries: Where did this teleport spot come from? Why did it only appear after we found the village? Am I possibly thinking too hard about a video game where you can turn into a wrestlesheep?

I spend the rest of the day mining for a Ruby so I can make that engagement ring.

One fewer thing to do once I hold the marriage vote.

The next day is a very special day: Link's birthday! The game automatically sets your birthday by whatever's set in the DS(converted to the appropriate season, and possibly adjusted to avoid conflicting with festivals).

We'll be spending most of today getting birthday wishes and presents - you always get the former, but you only get presents if you're good friends with the villagers.

This is not a present. Please don't take it!

Most of the gifts relate to each villager's interests, unsurprisingly.

I thought I'd get you something.
Thank you.
Oh, don't worry. I'm just investing in your future.
What?
Ho ho.

Marjorie gives us a Greenifier. Practical!

Oh, and, here's a little something I got you. Hope you enjoy it.
Th-Thank you.

Sakuya provides a Large Fleece. Less handy since I have a Wooly producing one every day.

Thank you. But are you sure?
Yes. I just had some leftover clothing material.
...

Her gift is another large fleece! I'm honestly surprised it's a plausible clothing material and not a turnip or something.

This isn't much, but I got it for you.

She gives us...another large fleece? Is this some weird residual racism thing because we're half-sheep?

Despite being RF2's purveyor of birthday gifts, RF3 Yue doesn't know it's our birthday at all.

And sometimes you hear someone yelling "Rainbow!" I-I'm really scared of ghosts and stuff...I'm over it though. Now, to business.

(She had nothing interesting for sale)

Collette gives us an Ultimate Curry. Delicious!

Rusk gives us a cheesecake. Also delicious!

Blaise gives us a Gold Cabbage seed. :eyepop: And this is why he's forgiven for being so boring most of the time.

Incidentally everyone still has normal dialogue today, I'm just not showing most of it so this update isn't super huge.

Oh, so here's your birthday present. (I hope he likes it...)
Yeah, thanks.

Karina gives us some gold ore. Sure, I'll take it.

She would always be there when I was in trouble.
She's a good mother.
Well, it's not like I asked her. (But I am grateful.)

Kuruna gives us Cake. Finally, someone who knows proper birthday protocol.

...is Ondorus hitting on us?

He should be grateful to the man/woman and sheep who...uh...wait...you know what, let's not actually think too hard about Link's parents.

Um, you're wishing me a happy birthday, aren't you?
Of course. Here, this is a present from me.
Th-Thank you.
There's no hidden meaning or anything!

She gives us some platinum ore. I assume the hidden meaning is crafting.

I'm pretty sure I've showed off this conversation before, but this bit gets me every time. :allears:

Oh, this a birthday present(sic), isn't it?! That was a nice birthday!
It's over already?!

Her present is a lamp squid. Let's be real, her only other gift options were also squids.

We get a snapper. A regular old snapper. At least they're worth a decent amount after cooking?

Another snapper. :geno:

She gives us a Green Crystal Seed! There's one color of crystal seed for each season, each worth a ton of money(up to a whopping 35,000G at level 10!), and this is the summer one.

He gives us an Ironleaf Seed. It's a summer flower, but we didn't have the opportunity to buy it then - the seeds available in the stores expand as you beat dungeons, and the Ironleaf becomes available after beating Death Wall.

I heard...It was your birthday. So...here's your present.
Th-Thank you. I'm happy.
...You're welcome.

Raven gives us a Heart Pendant, which increases skill xp gain. It'd be a great gift if I didn't have one already. :v:

But, I can't use that as an excuse...
What?
...

I'm used to Link being kind of slow on the uptake, but it gets a bit silly when it's about his own birthday.

I heard it was your birthday today. Everyone likes to celebrate their birthday. While you're young, that is.
...
So, I got this for you. Hope you like it.

Best Bro Gaius gives us some Platinum. I'll take it.

This is from me. It's not much, but I hope you like it!

Present: Diamond. Cha-ching!

Shara gives us a Blue Crystal seed, which grows in spring.

And now for a Very Special Episode.

No, that's not it...
Then what's the matter?
It's a little embarrassing. Please don't tell anyone. I actually...gained a little weight...So I've been skipping meals.
No!
!!
If you want to diet, you need to balance your meals with exercise! Skipping meals is like suicide!!
I-Is that right?
Yes! Whatever you do, don't skip your meals!
I see...
I-I'm sorry! I'll be sure to eat my dinner and even have dessert tonight!
But don't forget to exercise to make up for it.

This Very Special Episode is brought to you by Animes Against Eating Disorders.

Oh, well...I don't...
Then how about this one?!
What?!
Th-Thank you.

Marian gives us a Greenifier. Which is surprisingly non-deadly, considering it's Marian.

Daria is the third person to give us Platinum. Get some originality, people.

He's the fourth person to give us Platinum. Goddammit Zaid. (Platinum is actually really useful, but come on!)

Things Not To Think Too Hard about : Just how sentient are monsters? Link's implied to be able to talk to Woolies while in his Wooly form, but he also has one in his barn making wool for him. Even Zaid apparently has no problem catching monsters to keep with him. But the horrible things the humans did/do to monsters is part of what pissed Kuruna off for so long, so they should be treated as more than just animals. But the game constantly treats them as animals.

I'm getting a headache, let's do a quest.

The mailbox really turns into a quest bottleneck. It's kind of a waste of the mailbox/bulletin board/owl split, if you ask me.

I'm glad the Unity Festival went on without incident, but...I am a little worried whether Kuruna got along with everyone.
Kuruna was fine.
I'm sure she was, too, but she was against the festival until the end. So I was hoping that you could ask everyone how they felt about Kuruna. Could you do that for me?
Okay. I'll do that!
I'm sorry to ask you to do this. Thank you. Oh, and please keep this from Kuruna.
I know.

Let's get to it!

Rude?

Rude.

To not be able to eat that not delicious looking horn...

So far so good...

Kuruna's safe(for now).

Racism solved, etc etc.

Harmony forever, etc.

...Collette, how old are you supposed to be? Because if you're a marriage option, you had damned well better be old enough to be a 'grown-up' yourself.

This one's an actual lengthy conversation, so it's the important one.

How was the Unity Festival?
It went well, I thought.
Oh, that's true, but...
Well...I was a little worried about what Kuruna would be like.
Is that right?
I mean, she was against the festival until the very end, right? And she was the "elder" and all. Things really could've gone differently if she'd wanted them to.
B-But Kuruna!
I know. I've lived long enough to be able to tell what someone's thinking just by looking at them.
I see.
She has a strong heart. I might be able to learn from her.
I see...

:toot:

I see...I'm glad. Link. Thank you. I am sure it was a hassle to go around to everyone. Please take this.
Thank you.

I wanted to ask what you had him do for you.
Um...
You don't mind, do you?
W-Well, I should be going...
Oh, wait! Link!
Hee-hee...Let's have a nice chat.

If I remember correctly, in RF4 you can upgrade your fishing pole with squid (or any fish) to make it more likely to catch that fish. I'm not sure if that works in RF3 though.

Probably not. The other ridiculously handy RF4 upgrade secret(upgrading one of your farm tools with a magnifying glass so you can see crop/soil info without switching a bunch) doesn't work in RF3 either, although it'd be less useful here anyway since you get a lot less info from the magnifying glass.

Best guess? The Tree created it as a hint about what Link needed to do to help it grow. But it was invisible to everyone but Link until the Unity festival, because otherwise another war could have started up.

That actually would explain a lot. The Sharance Tree knows Link is a clueless idiot, so it gave him a blinking neon sign towards the people he needed the humans to reconcile with, and it also grows after each boss in the dim hope Link can recognize cause and effect(he never does, but the Tree tried).

I also like it because it implies Link is so stupid that there's a very good reason he gets skill-ups for things as basic as walking and eating. Dude hit his head hard.

Music: Fall

Short(relatively speaking) update today because it was either that or an update that's way too long.

Today is a regular old day where I can finally make those fried veggies for Blaise.

And I'm going to promptly ignore him and do another Kuruna quest first. I'm not sure how many of these I want to do before the marriage vote, but I at least want enough to show off her character development. The other bachelorettes have all their quests done or only have a couple left, whereas Kuruna's get halted halfway through until you do the Unity Festival, and I want things to be semi-fair. :v:

I could just finish everyone's questline before the vote, but I do kind of want to get the vote done sometime this year.

Well, not exactly...But even though we had the Unity Festival, he hated the settlement for so many years. I just don't want to see him alone!
Okay, I'll come along, then. But wouldn't Ondorus be more appropriate than me?
He has his own duties. I don't want to disrupt him.
You're a very thoughtful leader.
Oh, I just try to keep my comrades' best interests at heart. There's no time to waste. Let us make haste, comrade.
Sure thing!

Music: Love

Well, it was a two-way street. We couldn't have done it without you.
I wasn't much help. I was opposed to the Unity Festival up until the eleventh hour.
Well, I was practically the same way! I would've kept on hating you if Link hadn't convinced me! Sorry to have held a grudge like that.
Well, we were both equally at fault, really.
We never would've opened our minds without Link!
Indeed.
Hey, it wasn't ALL me!

But we did all the most important parts. :colbert:

Anway, it looks like the Sharance Tree has grown, but the flowers haven't blossomed.
No, they haven't. Perhaps it's my fault. Maybe I still harbor latent hatred toward the Hornless...
No, don't blame yourself. I'm sure we must be missing something.
Are you sure?

Well, the fact that you keep referring to us with a vaguely-racist term probably isn't helping.

The "bond beyond the races". I suppose that just coming together isn't a "bond."
Which means?
Link, why don't you start dating Kuruna?

Music: Contest

Friendship isn't the only kind of "bond." It could be love.
That...may be true.
Kuruna, do you hate Link?
Of course not!
No! Not at all!
Uh, Wells? Lay off Kuruna.
I was speaking hypothetically!
I have a reputation to uphold! Don't tease me like that!
Sorry about that. But why haven't the flowers bloomed?
I wonder...The records only have the "bond beyond the races" written. Maybe there's another secret.
I'm stumped. Well, there's no need to rush. It could take another 10 or 20 years, for all we know.

Or it might help if you wait until spring, since flowers generally don't bloom in fall. :v:

Yes. Let's take what we've learned from the Unity Festival and go from there. We can build on this!
Let's get going, then, comrade.
All right.
Wells, I hope we will remain friends.
I'd like that, too.
Well, will you accompany me back home, comrade?
With pleasure.
Well, it's time to get going.

Regardless, please take this as a token of my appreciation.
Hmm...
What's the matter?
It's about what Wells said. He was just joking, you know!

This is going to end well.

Y-You could've put that a LOT more delicately!
What do you mean?!
You should know. Goodbye!

If cluelessness was an Olympic sport, Link would get the gold medal.

But I guess Kuruna thought he only deserved the silver.

So?
I'm over it.

What a convenient way to wrap up that plot thread. Not that there was ever any danger of a named character leaving permanently.

What?
Never mind...

Seriously though, how is Link so earth-shatteringly dense? This is unusual levels of gormlessness even for an anime-style protagonist.

...that's nice, Collette.

Collette might realize what a horrible influence Marian is?

So have you been eating them? Link has canonically been trying to get you to eat your vegetables for 3/4ths of a year. Don't let his efforts go to waste.

Well, our house might be bigger, but it still lacks indoor plumbing. So baths are still needed. :v:

Yue confirmed as stranger danger.

Among her wares today is...

:stare:

Okay, one level doesn't matter that much in the grand scheme of things, but gently caress it, I can afford it. Hell, I could have afforded two if I didn't mind being broke for a few days.

I probably shouldn't have bought even the one though, because look at how unexciting that levelup is.

Holy poo poo, calm down Sherman, your sprite is sweating.

Playing house is when you do whatever you want to your playmate--
isn't it?
...

This is a followup to a conversation I didn't show off, where Marian says she's been friends with Collette since they were both little, and they liked to play house together. Poor Collette.

The mailbox quest bottleneck means I have loads of freetime most days now. I spend the rest of today beating stuff up as a Wooly, just because. Extra skill xp is always important, because your skill levels impact your stats way more than your actual level.

And they all feed into each other, like how crafting needs drops from mining & fighting. The accessory grind in particular is super important, because there's a wide variety of them(meaning you need a lot of skill levels and accessory bread to make them all) but you'll probably only use a small subset of them depending on your playstyle.

The next day...

There's not even going to be a throwing skill until RF4! I call fowl!

I guess I should get this out of the way while I remember that I have Fried Veggies.

Sure, if you count 'waiting a few days for ingredients to grow' as a challenge.

Yes...a little.
Then let me have a taste now.
Please...
......! Ha ha ha...
...?
I'm sorry, Link. It seems that I've pressured you too much.
Is it not good?
Oh, no. It's very, very good. And your earnest feelings have been instilled in this meal. But not for cooking, but your love for your field.
...
I thought I would get you to realize the joy of cooking. To welcome you as a fellow cook, but...How childish it was of me. I'm sorry, Link.

I probably spend more effort on cooking than on growing stuff in the fields, but :ssh:.

Oh, don't be. I'm honored that you think so highly of me.
This is to show you my appreciation for this wonderful meal. Please take it.
Th-Thank you very much.
Perhaps it will be Collette that welcomes...Oh, um, never mind.

This accessory bread gives me something very important.

These let Link walk on water while they're equipped, completely obsoleting the lilypad magic seed. Unfortunately, they're also a pain in the rear end to make - they require 6 ingredients(most accessories only need 3 or 4), all of which are monster drops.

That's a pretty damned weird harvest festival. Especially since Turnips(pink or otherwise) aren't even a Fall crop. :v:

Several dozen updates after first showing her off, I remember that Mei makes a cameo in the inn sometimes. I'm rewarded with a bland RF1 reference.

(The 'special meaning' being 'gameshark a lv80 Lover Snapper in because there's no way in hell you're marrying Mei otherwise')

Huh? Why do you say that?
What?!

No, really, that's how the conversation goes.

>You bet!

That's good to hear! It should be a lot of fun, huh?

Not really, unless you're good at aiming and hand/eye coordination. (I'm not)

I am not every good at athletics. I hope I don't do anything clumsy.

Honestly, :same:.

Letting Marian participate in this contest seems...unwise.

Welp, out of stuff to do, let's go kill things.

Attack after a running start to do a lunge attack!

The rest of the day is spent grinding shortsword skill using the Chaos Blade.

The slippery winter area is probably not the best place to try out our new attack. :downs: Although the lunge attack is kind of finnicky anyway.

One nice thing about the Chaos Blade is that it innately inflicts paralysis on things, making it a super-easy way to grind the Paralyze Resist skill. Much better than eating random mushrooms(which is a valid way to grind the ailment resists in this game) or letting enemies inflict you with paralysis.

After I'm sick of dungeoneering, I make a bunch of Healing Potions because the Pharmacy skill grind hates you and wants you to die.

Fully upgrading the Tear Pendant leaves me something not so great defense-wise, but useful if I ever do some magic. Also useful if I ever fight something with powerful water attacks. And if I want to fight with farm tools for whatever reason.

Man, the days go fast when you have no plot stuff to do and only one quest to show off every day.

Someone Even Dumber Than Link

Today is a contest I'm bad at! :toot:

Because they fire me up!!

Poor Zaid, a hot blooded shonen protagonist stuck being a side character in a simple farming sim/rpg.

I feel like I could win.if I had permission to use magic.
That'd be cheating.

Please don't.

...why are you better at throwing needles than balls? :stare:

Link...What are you talking about?

Oh no, the small child can see through my meaningless platitudes.

Yes. (But just because I take it seriously doesn't mean...)
Watch for flying turnips.
...

No. She just ends up throwing a few...Every year, just thinking about it is fun.
Yeah... (It might be funny.)

Why don't you tell her, too, Collette?
Hm? They're tasty.
You eat them?!

Hmm...

Okay, then, do you put it in baths?
No. They're to sell.
They're to eat.

Hypocrite.

I just couldn't help it...
Gaius?!

:allears:

Alright, time to face the inevitable.

Pink Turnip and Gold Turnip are worth even more. Control is going to be most important. Oh, and one last thing. You can see your score and the time in the bottom right corner of the top screen. Okay! Ready...set...go!

Music: Contest

So the problem I have with this contest is...

Oh loving hell why did they let Marian throw the turnips.

OK, that's a problem with the contest, but not the one I was talking about. So a bunch of balls spawn on the ground, and you pick them up and throw them at turnips.

Problem 1: You have to be more or less constantly moving, since you won't throw things if you're standing still.
Problem 2: I am bad at aiming.
Problem 3: I'm even worse at aiming when I can't stop to line up a good shot first.

Now at first, the shots are easy. Marian throws one turnip at a time moving from the top of the screen to the bottom.

Then she starts throwing multiple turnips, often requiring angled shots to get them all.

Then she starts throwing so many you have zero time to think.

And near the end, gold turnips will show up way in the back, going from left to right(or vice versa). I'm never going to hit them, ever.

Yeah, I didn't even rank with my whopping 2300 points.

I tried one more time just to say I did, and technically do better. Technically.

After a few more reloads and hating my life, I manage to scrape into third place.

On the bright side, reloading let Daria get that victory she wanted. :v:

It wasn't about the cooking breads. It was about the principle of the thing.

It hurts...

Villager reviews of the festival are mixed.

Seriously though, why turnips? If they wanted to specifically throw turnips(because there's three varieties of them for point differences), put the festival in a turnip-growing season! If they wanted to make it a fall harvest festival(to pretend this is like real life where fall was the big harvest), have them throw fall crops!

Wait, is that why Marian was sending out the turnips? They were being magically moved, not thrown?

Bask in your victory, Daria. Just ignore the alternate universe where you didn't win.

No, you can't.

Also I don't think turnips have weak spots.

:iceburn:

Last update, someone asked why Link's intelligence stat went down after leveling up. I'm not sure why, but I'm blaming it on the fact that he apparently has no short-term memory.

Quest time!

What, you didn't read my letter?
It only said "let's go together."
Hmm, I guess that happens sometimes. Well, let's go!
Like I said, where are we going?!
You just don't get it. Two guys on an adventure obviously means treasure.
Treasure?!
Sh! Keep your voice down!

Whew...
Alright, first we'll go to the desert entrance. We'll talk more there.
I-I get the picture.

As hilarious as this quest would be if it was just Zaid dragging us around with no explanation, he does have a destination in mind.

Ha ha ha...

And the book was about some phantom Messhilight Ore!

The Messhilight Ore was apparently an important part of marrying Julia in RF2. It gets forged into her engagement ring or something. So says the RF wiki.

Look, I'm not the RF2 expert here, okay?

So?
You don't get it. It's a treasure they call a phantom! We've gotta find it!
But it's a phantom item, right? How're we supposed to find it?
Ha ha ha ha! It says exactly where we can find it!

So how is it a phantom item, then?

Oh!
Apparently...The rock crystallizes in cold regions.
In other words! The rock is in Vale River!

Oh.

...
So let's go!
I'm going home...

Hey! Wait just a minute! Where are you going?!

*sigh*...Link, were you even listening?
This phantom rock is right there! You have to go!
What's the point of going if I know we're not going to find it...
We'll find it! Just come on, let's go!
I want to go home...

If your plan is dumb enough that Link is calling you out on it, just stop. Then go hide in shame for a year.

Of course we're still going along with it because why not. :downs:

Music: Vale River

Hold your horses.

What makes you so sure?
Just come on!

He's still level 25 or something & this area expects you to be in the mid-30s, he's deadweight. :v: (Also he helps us fight anyway. Gameplay/story integration! :argh:)

Luckily I don't need his help in the first place.

I'm tired...

At least we got something useful out of this bullshit.

Talk to me after defeating all of these monsters!
Okay.

This is a screen where the map is divided in half by the river. Since I've beaten the dungeon, there's a handy teleporter to get to the other side, but...

After two (in-game) hours of fighting, I figure out that the teleporter resets the room, meaning it's impossible to defeat everything without the lilypad seed or water shoes.

The other thing I'd noticed but had never been a problem until now is that tired magic seeds don't become active again if they're not in your inventory. I've had a tired lilypad seed sitting in my fridge for weeks.

And it's late enough in the day that I can't just buy another one from the flower shop.

I get my revenge on Zaid by forcing him to watch me fish all night.

We'll just have to regroup in the morning and

...are...you just gonna stand there the whole night? Okay then. :stare:

Yeah, so NPCs will stay in your party until you dismiss them. This extends to them not leaving while you go to sleep.

But the lilypad seed is active again now that I took a rest with it not in the fridge, so I can finish this stupid quest.

Time for revenge.

Let's just keep moving!
...

Congratualations Zaid, you're now my first and only entry in the list of villagers I'm going to stab in their sleep.

OK, it's made better by the fact that you just need to go to the big mysterious cavern one screen north.

Yeah. My gut is telling me that it's here...first, let's take care of the monsters. Careful, they're strong!
I wonder if it's really here...

One monster massacre later...

Oh brother...

Hey look, a convenient hidden item spot two feet from where we're standing. Surely this can't be it.

Hm, is this...?
You found it?!

That's it! This is it!! THIS IS IT!!! The Messhilight Ore!
Really?!
Yeah, we did it!
I really didn't think we'd find it...but it really exists.
That's what I told you! My gut is never wrong!
I guess it's just wild instinct...
What do you mean wild?! You should be happier!

I just can't get enough of the fact that out of all the weirdos in this game, Zaid is the one that breaks Link.

I'm kidding! I'm really glad we found it!
Stop being weird and we can divide it up at home!

Music: Monster Village

Yeah, we did find the Messhilight Ore.
Ha ha ha ha! Now I'm rich!

Ondorus? What is it?
You sounded like.you were having fun. Did something happen?
I found this.
I see. A Messhilight Ore? They are quite rare. You're both very lucky. I'd only read.about them. I wanted to see one. May I take a look?
Of course! I got it for you, Ondorus! Do whatever you want with it!
?!

Music: Alchemy

For me?
Yes!

No problem!
I'll have to repay you two. How about this? It's no Messhilight Ore, but this Small Crystal is rare, too.
Thank you very much.
I'll go and study this now. Thank you again.

You gave it away...
I know, I know! But he was so happy, and we got this in return! That's not so bad!
*sigh* ...yeah.

When we last left off, Zaid made us do a bunch of work for a semi-useful crafting item('semi' in that it's +8 magic attack +2 magic defense, which would be swell if I used spells more than once a century). Peachy.

The lilypad magically reappeared once Link left the cutscene zone, btw.

It's too beautiful! How can my art compete with the dazzling colors of a crisp fall morning?

Fun fact: Daria has a variation of this conversation for every season. Except it's "Fall is so beautiful!" "But it's [spring/summer/winter]." :allears:

No, that's okay. You carry that tune well enough by yourself. What's the name of that song, anyway?
"Die, Giant Squid"!
But the melody sounds so...soothing.

Why do you like Marian? I'm not even sure what appealing qualities she's supposed to have as a bachelorette. Unless you're a masochist I guess.

Enough dawdling, let's go questing. With a more focused person this time.

I would like to give a gift to Kuruna.
Oh! Well, that's great!
But, I was hoping that you could help as well...What do you say?
Of course! I'd be happy to help.
Really?! Thank you. We were thinking of treating Kuruna to a night at the inn.
Inn? You mean Shino's?
Yes, that's right. Kuruna mentioned it at dinner the other night. She was very interested in their culture. She seemed like she really wanted to go.
The inn, huh? That sounds great.
It would only be for one night...
I'm sure she'd still like that a lot! So, what did you need me to do?
Would you be able to reserve a room with Shino?
Oh, I see. You wanted me to make a reservation.
Yes, I should be the one going, but I didn't know how...I did not want to risk making a mistake.
I'm sure even if it didn't work out, Kuruna would forgive you.
...That may be true. But I still didn't want to fail.
O-Of course...
Can I count on you?
Yes, leave it to me!

Oh, no. Ondorus and Zaid are giving Kuruna an "inn voucher". So I've come to reserve a room.
Oh, I see.

Hmmm, well, today and tomorrow should be okay. And even after that it shouldn't get too busy.

Translation: "Literally come over any time, it's a request so we can't time-lock it."

Really?! I'll go let Ondorus know.
Is it just for Kuruna?
I think so.
Wouldn't that make her a little lonely? We do have three rooms, maybe you could ask Ondorus if he would be interested in staying?
Hmmm, yes. I will.

But before that, since I'm here anyway...

Max, for reference. He's the only normal-looking guy in the Sainte-Coquille family. For now. :gonk:

(She had nothing notable for sale)

Now back to the settlement, where I most definitely did not miss screenshotting this first line.

Link, how did the reservation go?

Shino suggested that Kuruna might prefer having all three of you spend the night as well. Have you considered all three of you spending the night? They have the room.
But it's a present for Kuruna...
Oh, I'm sure she'd rather spend it with everyone!
Really?
Yes! I'm sure of it!
If you really think so.
Then I'll go tell Shino right away!

I see. I think Kuruna would enjoy that more.
Thank you for your advice.
Oh, please don't mention it. We're the ones who stand to make more money.
Th-That's true...
Well, I've made a reservation for three then. Please give my regards to Ondorus.
Okay.

No, I was happy to help. Please enjoy your stay.
Thank you. This is for everything. Please, have this.
Thank you. Please enjoy your stay.
Thank you.

Is there an echo in here? Echo in here?

These would be pretty good rewards if I remembered magic existed.

And then I chopped wood the rest of the day. I don't even need wood for anything. I'm not sure why I'm storing it instead of selling it. The only reason I'm chopping it in the first place is the skill grind(and to get stumps off the fields).

I feel like they overcorrected for the terrible, awful wood grinds in RF1 and 2 and didn't manage to hit a happy medium until RF4(where you have more things to spend your lumber on without needing huge amounts of it for plot advancement).

Crafting also happens.

Warping to tomorrow, it's Collette's birthday. Her only loved item is Ultimate Curry, so she'll just have to deal with getting rice instead.

It's even on sale! Link is the best gift giver.

I do make it into a rice ball and then a baked rice ball, just for the extra cooking skill points. Never not be grinding.

Her family is very enthusiastic about today.

No, and this rice ball isn't going to help either.

:toot:

I went and saw the sea from the town plaza! It's amazing...there's no way you could ever drink that much water.

...you know what? gently caress it. Zaid, drink all the saltwater you want. You've earned it.

Time for a quest where I take Kuruna somewhere she 100% definitely hasn't been before, and also 100% definitely hasn't broken the timeline in.

Wait, do I really send you out on so many errands?!
Uh...no. Never.
How DARE you! Anyway, I don't have an errand for you today. Shara told me about a flower field near town. I didn't want to go alone, so I invited you!

I can't believe how hard I sequence broke just by having a date during the Unity Festival. :v:

Oh, that was nice of you.
So...would you be willing to accompany me?
Well, as long as I'm not intruding.
You couldn't be intruding if I invited you!
Oh, duh. Sorry.
Heh heh.
What's so funny?!
It's just that you've been apologizing a lot lately.
I...have?
Anyway, let's go.
(When have I been apologizing...?)

Music: Date

Welcome to this place you have definitely never been to before.

They're so...beautiful.
They're a miracle. It's like magic.
They really are! It's like I've been teleported to another world!
Oh, wait!
What's wrong?
Well, I just remembered!
Remembered what?
What you told me before! "I've never left the desert."
What about it?
Well, I'm just so happy that you can appreciate a place that's not the desert! It means a lot!
Oh, now look at me! You're making me blush, silly!

What?

Is this...lunch?!
Why, what's wrong about eating here?!
Uh, nothing! It's a great idea! So...can I have a bite?
You better do more than that! It's why I brought it!

...No, it's good.
Oh, please! I can tell you're lying!
No! It's really good!
I worked really hard on that. It better be good.
What's in it? I don't think I've ever tasted anything like it.
Cactus.
Cactus?! Like, cactus cactus?!
What other cactus is there? I got it from the Sol Terrano Desert.
I didn't know that was edible!
You can find exquisite tastes in unexpected places.
Yes. I should know that by now.
And it's sour and sticky. That makes for a wonderful combination!
Lemme take a big bite here...

Gonna show all three responses because I can do that.

Isn't it, though?! Cactus tastes good, but it's tedious to remove the thorns.
Yeah, that seems like a lot of work.
But you liked it, so it was all worth it!

>Very sticky...

I just said that! Were you even listening?
I guess I underestimated the cactus.
What are you talking about? Did you get a blow to the head or something?

>Ouch!

Are you OK?!
...Nah, I'm fine. I just bit my tongue.
That can't have felt very good. You scared me! I thought a needle got you!
Sorry. I was just rushing because it's so good!
Well, be a little more careful.

And convergence.

I know!
I didn't know you cooked, Kuruna! I should've brought something, too...like chocolate.
CHOCOLATE???!!! You're right. You should've made chocolate.
I should've ordered you to!

Kuruna is a woman after my own heart.

Well...I'll have another opportunity, right?
...If you play your cards right.
I'll never let you down again!
I hope not. So, shall we get going, then?
Okay. Invite me again some other time!
Hmph! Next time, YOU will be the one doing the inviting!
O-Of course! Absolutely!
I'll be waiting. Well, it's time for me to head home.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to fight I go.

Music: VS Amaranthine and Crimsone

Bosses can be refought once a day. Refights aren't quite as convenient as they'd be in RF4 because boss room warps weren't invented yet, but it's still a good idea to farm their drops.

Even being one dungeon ahead of them is enough to make these fights trivial, so they go fast enough either way.

Music: VS Skelefang

But why stop at one refight when you can have two?

Skelefang is more cooperative with drops than Amaranthine and Crimsone were. He's also the quickest boss to refight, since you just go a screen north of the Univir settlement instead of having to run through an entire dungeon first.

Finally, a bit of crafting. I've been slacking on making a new shield long enough that a base Knight Shield has better defenses than my fully upgraded old shield.

And mashing various metals and monster bits into the Knight Shield just makes it even better.

I'd also like to point out the sell price - I'm obviously not selling it now, but selling off old equipment gets you a good chunk of change.
