The bitches who get savaged by the editing (and the fans) on this show are the ones who appear to lack control of themselves when they're being bitches -- the fear-biters and the flailers. If you stay temperate and sly, ideally with a cool smirk, you can get away with drat near anything. This is entirely within the protocols of Drag Tradition, to the show's credit.

Also Aja apparently didn't get the Do Not gently caress With The Quirky Endearing One memo. It's season goddamn 9. I think she might not be the brightest knife in the shed.

This is good advice for life in general. You can get away with murder if you're nice ~50% of the time, don't lose your cool, and are somewhat witty about your bitchery.

I am still amazed how many queens each season show up and
  1. Don't know how to sew.
  2. Don't have a Snatch character down F L A W L E S S, or get nervous and change it at the last minute.
  3. Think that they can survive on body alone.
  4. Think that they can survive by being the mean girl.
  5. Tempt the villain edit gods.
  6. Try way too hard for the hero edit. (Kimora going so far as to try and have a break down ep. 3 over the tiniest thing was the most I've seen it get so far.)

Like...Do they not watch the show, just come across the audition call somewhere, and think "Hey, I could probably do this!"?

I didn't like her at first, but that's because she gave me a Serena Chacha vibe, and I spent a lot of my undergrad in art classes, which led to me dealing with a lot of those "I am an artist " types. Once I realized she wasn't pretentious and incompetent, and is, in fact, adorable and humble, I was hooked.

I do think that the votive candle is a little goofy and affected, but overall, she's amazing.

Valentina isn't particularly quirky imo, certainly not on the level of Katya. She's just very latin. CLF is a lot more tryhard quirky and that's honestly wearing thin. Valentina is just very sweet, confident, and so far looking very competitive.

Man, it kind of sucks that we never got to see her lipsync something she's comfortable in. So many times queens win at the lipsync because they're best at feeling the song and I get the feeling Aja wouldn't know sexy in the slightest.

I wonder if she really has a lipsync wheelhouse. Like, all she ever did was get up there and wiggle a little, vaguely mouthing along with the song. Hell, listen to her talk about her drag life, and you hear her mention 2 things:

1) Being sexy.
2) Wearing designer outfits.

She can kinda serve a look, and that seems to be about it.

I don't dislike her but I also don't love her like everyone else seems to. There's just something really weird and off putting about her personality/the way she speaks. I can't put my finger on it though. It's just.... weird.

EDIT: She is talented and has been a great competitor though.

Yeah, I figured she'd be one of those messy queens who can at least serve a good lipsync. Like, she can't sew, isn't funny, and her drag is on the basic side. How exactly did she get on the show?

Just watched the episode on youtube. HOLY poo poo that runway!

Those sidekicks were... gently caress.

Well, thank you untucked for giving me a reason to dislike Aja. I didn't need one, but it's nice to have one. Her lip sync was impress-- the moves were impressive. But there was an air of (generally understandable) desperation about the performance. Aja seems to be a queen who goes for maximum impact, but hasn't learned how to go for maximum effect. If she's a quick study, she might be able to fix that during the competition. On the other hand, she turned herself into Gossamer from Looney Tunes and though she turned it out.

You can add me to team Valentina. I should find her affected and obnoxious, but I don't. She just seems so drat earnest and happy to be here. She's the Labrador puppy of drag!

Sacrificial lambs.

There is a limited pool of talent to draw from. And there will always be someone who needs to get kicked off in the first few episodes. There are those queens who apply to be on the show every year for years, and Ru always says that they weren't ready yet. I genuinely believe that. She sees something in them, but recognizes that they aren't polished enough yet.

Then there are queens who I'm sure Ru sees their audition video and says to World of Wonder, "She'll do," fully recognizing that they aren't going to make it past Snatch Game at the very latest.

I think this goes right in with the theory that Ru goes into every season with an idea of who she wants to win that season, of who she thinks would be good for the Drag Race brand. Obvious cases are Bianca del Rio and Bob the Drag Queen. I also think that she is willing to change her mind if someone else surprises them, like Chad Michaels and Sharon Needles. Or if the heir to the throne fails to impress, like Kennedy Davenport surviving all the way to the final five, further than she should have, and then leaving us with a lackluster final 3 because Ru recognized that there was no way she could justify crowning Kennedy.

So if one of these sacrificial lambs can actually surprise Ru, then so be it. But there is no way that Ru ever expected Kimora to go more than a couple of episodes into the season.

Actually, I liked Charlie's too. I think I would have put her in the top 3 instead of Peppermint. I just thought that Valentina's was a little funnier and Charlie's seemed more like an extension of her normal drag persona as opposed to a separate character.

I think painting in blue was more ambitious of them, but Valentina wound up with cleaner results. Farrah did pretty well with the blue (and it doesn't hurt that she's super cute to begin with), but Alexis looked off to me. There's something weird going on with her contour.

I have no idea what the difference is between Instagram makeup, real life/stage makeup, and filming makeup is for a drag queen, but do you think that's why Aja's paint is so weird?

I mean, Trixie put a ton on too, but she didn't look as cakey or messy.

Pan Dulce posted:

That's the thing. They both paint for the next town over, but Trixie's is purposefully huge and ridiculous looking, making her eyes huge etc, with clean lines and blending. Aja just has incredibly thick makeup that hides her face. Back row it probably looks fine, but in the front seats or television it's just a heavy mess.

Trixie basically paints a cartoon on her face, does it the same way every time, and her touch/execution is perfect for what she does. A LOT of work went into developing that look. Aja, otoh, looks like someone's kid brother doing drag as a joke for Halloween.

My only guess is that Charlie's a comedy girl. They expected her to be funny, but she didn't make them piss themselves laughing so she's merely safe (tho I think she should have been top 3 or whatever this week), and Valentina going all in on her character placed her ahead because it's not expected of her.

It's not even that she isn't painting for TV, it's that her poo poo looks busted. All of her appearances since ending filming her makeup is much better-- she obviously took the criticism to heart at some point.
