You know I'm liking this Supply roll for a random number of limited munitions for each mission more and more.

What we could do is increase our minimum Supply roll number as we get more resources and and as we progress through the campaign.
And would offer us a nice way to ramp up the difficulty of missions as we progress, and would offer some cool options with our mission choices. Giving some macro level strategy of what to do next.

+1 supply stat for capturing some airport vs +1 new ground/plane/scout units for capturing an arms depot

Also, might be worth rounding the Supply roll up to an even number. So it ensures we'll at least have 2 missiles /i.e a usable loadout whatever it rolls for.

Also if you want to open a paypal for this, there are people who can chuck into that to contribute. It's been a good bit of fun and i certainly would enjoy helping this Planes D+D campaign to continue.

Can also advertise it on outside forums, I'm sure they'd enjoy reading about this LP as we go along, especially if you're also uploading onto an external site. Can see this getting bigger!

That's not a bad idea. We've had some neat side mission stuff like that in the past, knock out a freighter and such.

I'm working on an external mirror site for the main thread content. It'll also be a general purpose spot where rando's can participate outside of SA. That said SA has a unique posting culture that has kept this going. I'm not sure if this style of LP could function on Reddit or Youtube alone. The goal is I'll post in parallel on both sites so that outsiders can participate as well as giving a back up for the thread content. The new site will also be free, whereas the :10bux: cuts out some of the folks.

Logistically we have three years of images, conversations, data, spreadsheets, dropbox links... You get the idea. Image hosting has been a mish mash of Imgur, Lpix, and other threads. If Imgur or Lpix took a dump the thread would look like total poop. The new mirror self-caches all image links so I'll never have to worry about that happening.

I really dislike the "Like and Subscribe" business model but could see a limited pot for something like Paypal or Patreon. But realistically this is a hobby, my golf or stamp collecting or whatever. Some people spend more on cigarettes in a month than I do on the thread hosting, outside art, everything. If people really love seeing outside voice actors or video actors, then maybe we could pitch in but lets worry about that later.

As far as promotion, go for it. The more the merrier! Hopefully I'll have the new mirror running by the weekend. The whole quarantine thing has a few advantages I guess. I'll get some banners together for thread approval too.

How much detail/how hard is it to translate a plan of action into the game?

Pretty much all you need is the Google Map link. Make a copy for yourself, draw some arrows and lines, and give me the basic idea. Some of our mission planners have been doing this for a long time and really like the nuance to a particular tactic. That said you can make this is simple as you'd like too.

Since I make the missions :ssh: I can make your mission work as long as it's not pants on head stupid. Then if the crowd voted it in there's hell to pay. Realistically most of these missions can be as simple as you'd like or as complicated. If you make it complicated, I make it work. If it's sensible and simple, I make it work.

Example mission :

1. Launch strike package at sunrise, have Eagle escort attached.
2. Once they reach point 1 they split between the two objectives.
3. Bomb 2 first, then bomb 3, then come home.
4. Don't get within range of the nasty thing.

Intent is the most important thing to get across. If I know what you want, I can make it happen.

Who wants a belly rub??

I haven't submitted a plan in forever but I do own CMO, so here's some of the details of how this actually works in-game in case you (TheParadigm or just whoever's reading this) want to know. Yooper, let me know if I'm stepping on any toes here.

Roughly speaking, your process is:
  1. Decide what your plan actually is
  2. Break that plan down into individual tasks
  3. Assign aircraft to those tasks
  4. Assign loadouts to those aircraft
Command works in terms of "missions". A mission isn't a map, that's a "scenario", but you assign an aircraft to a mission which defines what they do, so these are your tasks above. Missions consist of a bunch of options but generally they're some combination of:
  • Fly/drive/sail to point
  • Orbit point
  • Attack specific named target (only works if the target is visible)
  • Patrol area
If you want your mission to start when X happens it is very easy to manually enable a mission so don't worry about stuff like "start at exactly 7:43:11 AM" or "launch bombers when fighters have shot down exactly 3 enemy aircraft".

Next, break your aircraft into groups. For combat aircraft, they're best off in groups of (multiples of) 2-4, but that is not a hard requirement. You're also usually better off not assigning aircraft with wildly different flight performance to the same group; don't try to have e.g. Eagles and Skyraiders both in the same group because their very different speeds will cause issues. Creating two groups and assigning them to the same mission will probably work better. Non-combat aircraft (recon, tankers, AEW, etc.) you can just do whatever with because usually they just hang out doing their thing by themselves and being ignored by everybody else.

Next, choose loadouts for your aircraft. CMANO-DB is more reliable but for some insane reason doesn't show munition counts; baloogan's wiki shows everything but also might just refuse to load entirely at random. Pay attention to the combat radius of your aircrafts' loadouts. This is not a hard number, the actual value will depend on altitude and throttle etc., but if you have an expected radius of 200nm you will not be able to fly 300nm to blow something up and expect to make it back without hitting up a tanker. And yes, you can specify altitude/throttle settings for your aircraft as well as part of your missions. Generally this is only explicitly set for "very low" (to avoid long-range detection), "very high" (to avoid AAA/MANPADS), or "use afterburner" (to get in and out quickly at the expense of fuel). Most of the time there is no reason to bother unless you want to fly through a canyon or something.

You can assign formal escort attachments to missions but I haven't really messed with that button much so I'm not really sure what happens if you do that. I always just set up a separate patrol area for fighters instead.

Then it's just get out your favorite paint program and start drawing mad scriblings on the map to describe where the rally points, targets, and patrol areas are.

As a refinement, you can specify more detailed rules for how your groups operate:
EMCON describes whether your active sensors (radar, sonar, and OECM) are, well, active. For AEW aircraft you probably want your radar on because otherwise they're just a big target, but if you're confident in your AEW's radar coverage you can have your fighters keep their search radars off which will slightly reduce the ease of locating them. Same thing with OECM, once you turn that on they will absolutely know you're there, they'll just have a hard time figuring out where you are, but if you think they won't see you at all keeping it off might let you keep the element of surprise.
WRA describes how many weapons to allocate to a given class of target and at what range to take the shot(s). Usually nobody messes with this but you can do silly things like order your aircraft to salvo all 16 SDBs at a single infantryperson if you really really really want them to die. More legitimate uses of this would be either restricting aircraft to one shot per attack to conserve ammo or forcing 2+ shots per attack if you're using some ancient lovely weapon that never hits or the target is hot so you want to just dump your load and run. I don't think there's a way to look up the default allocation rules outside of Command itself. You also might want to set "not authorized" on some types if e.g. you want your ATGM-carrying aircraft to not waste shots on soft or stationary targets or your fighters to not waste your expensive active radar missiles on helicopters or drones. Note that the available target types differ based on weapon.
General is the "other" category. This has a bunch of weird things ranging from "okay to use nukes" some day... to "ignore EMCON when under attack". Usually the only one anyone cares about here is "A/G strafing" because that defaults to "no" but you can also control when your aircraft returns to base, if it will engage ambiguous or opportunity targets, and if it's allowed to jettison ordnance. The other defaults are pretty much always fine unless you're doing something exceptionally weird. Please never specify "engage ambiguous: yes" which permits the group to fire on "yellow" targets because then we'll just start shooting down 747s both carrying and crewed by war orphans or something. Ignore the checkboxes in the linked screenshot, those only show up if you're in scenario edit mode and control if the user/player is allowed to change those things.
There's also "withdraw" but that does not apply to aircraft. It's used by ships and land units to decide when to retreat due to damage/fuel/ammo levels.

The last and most important step is to give your overall plan and its missions/groups names along some goofy theme that based on this thread is probably a reference to Ace Combat and/or anime.

Ultimately it's never a bad idea to submit a plan, we've had very few actually go legitimately poorly and generally that's just down to real bad luck with weapon rolls or an unexpected twist as opposed to a bad plan.
