Exactly. If you've got 2 guys that can coattail off Kane pretty well with the same cap hit, might as well go for the younger one? Will be interesting to see how Panarin does on CBJ...

I'm ok with the Oshie contract because I have no desire to think about what the team will be in four years. Also, based on absolutely nothing he seems like a player who might age gracefully anyway.

Seems pretty obvious the rationale behind Oshie's contract is "by the time it becomes a bad contract Ovechkin will be done and we'll have to blow it up and start over anyway who who gives a poo poo how long we have to carry a 5.75M cap hit"

He was a projected top 5 pick (up to #2 at one point), got mono and then couldn't get significant playing time. It wasn't a very good year for him.

It wasn't unexpected that a GM would make that pick. It wasn't unexpected that the GM was Ken Holland.

i saw that TJ Oshie contract and i was like "hahahahaha wow thats bad" then remembered justin abdelkader, a player much worse than TJ Oshie, got a similar contract then i cried a little knowing ken holland is still general manager of the detroit red wings hockey team

Reaves is a pain in the dick to play against but ultimately isn't very good so ehhhhhh

Rangers 1st round draft seems...OK. Didn't really swing for the fences but got a player who is almost NHL ready and could project as a strong 2nd line center, and another guy who has skills and is young and maybe develops into something a bit more special

Dunno, guess you come back in 5 years and see how it's doing

Reaves is a little better at playing hockey than Sestito so we can have him beat the tar out of people who dare touch Sidney.

Uh trading Sundqvist is weird though since many had him penciled in as the potential 4c if Cullen retires. If we lose Cullen/Bones I have no idea what JR's plan for centers is.

Pornographic Memory

not really wild about that move but rutherford basically said he was going to get an enforcer and he's less lovely than tom sestito i guess. i'd have liked to see sundqvist become a regular player for the penguins but he was probably never going to be more than a run of the mill bottom six center, almost definitely their 4c next year tops

this does mean the penguins need two new bottom six centers though unless they re-sign bonino and decide carter rowney is their 4c moving forward, and even so that doesn't leave them any spare centers for when one (or more) inevitably get injured

Rust and Guentzel are both capable of playing center but good god would I not want them to because they are tiny, tiny men who will be broken unless I guess Reaves is on the ice to protect their delicate little frames

really though now that i think of it what the gently caress is with the pick swap, the players are kind of questionable one for one but sundqvist is a replaceable commodity so whatever but there's really no need for the pick swap
